Determinants of early working impairments in multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Unemployment can directly affect social status and identity. Assessing and adjusting determinants of early working impairments in a chronic disease can thus reduce its long-term burden. Hereby, we aim to evaluate differences in occupational history and early working impairments between people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthy workers. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study comparing 71 workers with MS [age 41.7 ± 9.4 years; females 59.1%; EDSS 2.0 (1.0-6.0)] and 71 controls (age 42.6 ± 11.9 years; females 33.8%). All participants filled in Work Ability Index (WAI), Work

AI framework for DRIVE model based mental health detection in text: a case study on how coping strategies are expressed during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: This article defines an artificial intelligence framework to detect individual's mental health (MH) status on social networks. The proposed framework, which consists of four main modules, aims to analyze the emotions that are expressed by social network users in their text posts and identify their mental coping strategies, resources, and demands based on The Demands-Resources-Individual Effects (DRIVE) model. Although sentiment analysis (SA) is effective in analyzing the polarity of the text, it is limited in detecting the mental health status in terms of the coping strategies, ava

Role of gender in perspectives of discrimination, stigma, and attitudes relative to cervical cancer in rural Sénégal.

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of female cancer deaths in Sénégal which is ranked 17th in incidence globally, however, the screening rate there is very low. Nuanced gendered perceptions and health behaviors of both women and men play a significant role in women's health. Our study analyzed gender differences on perceptions of gender roles, discrimination, cancer attitudes, cancer stigma, and influences in healthcare decision making within our study population to inform ongoing cervical cancer prevention work in the rural region of Kédougou, Sénégal. We conducted a cross-sectional survey

The effect of a social network-based intervention to promote HIV testing and linkage to HIV services among fishermen in Kenya: a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, highly mobile men such as fishermen have a low uptake of HIV testing, prevention, and treatment. This study aimed to examine whether a HIV status-neutral, social network-based intervention could improve testing and linkage to prevention and treatment among fishermen in Kenya. METHODS: The Owete cluster-randomised trial mapped the male social networks of fishermen in three communities along Lake Victoria in Siaya County, Kenya, and identified distinct social networks (clusters) with a highly connected, network-central man (promoter) in each network. Participa

Drinking game behaviors, motivations to play, contextual factors, and perceived risks among university students in New Zealand.

University students from different countries report regular drinking game (DG) participation, a risky social activity known to encourage heavy consumption. Theory and research suggest that general drinking motives are proximal correlates of alcohol use. Motives specific to DGs are also associated with DG behaviors. Students can play DGs in different social contexts (e.g., house parties, with friends/roommates), and many recognize the associated health risks. However, the influence of motives to play DGs, perceived risk, and the social context on DG behaviors is unknown among New Zealand (NZ) u

[Evaluation of the medical and social status of hundred-year centenarians in the Chelyabinsk region.].

The analysis of demographic trends reveals a sustained pattern of population aging. This process is associated with both declining fertility rates and increasing life expectancy. Despite these well-documented global demographic shifts, the health status of centenarians remains understudied. The aim of this research is to assess the medical and social status of centenarians in the Chelyabinsk Region. To investigate the health of centenarians, data extraction was performed for patients aged 100 years and older. The final database comprises 72 records detailing the health status and parameters of

Culture and body image: subcultural variations in coping strategies and their associations with psychological distress among European Canadians and East Asian Canadians.

Whether through friends, family, or social media, it is common to encounter situations that threaten body image. Threats to body image can lead individuals to question or perceive their appearance negatively if not coped with effectively. In turn, a negative body image is often associated with disordered eating patterns. Given the prevalence and severity of eating disorders globally, it is essential to gain insight into body image coping strategies to recognize adaptive ones while identifying those that may exacerbate body image concerns. With the significant cultural and ethnic diversity pres

Attentional heterogeneity in social anxiety disorder: Evidence from Hidden Markov Models.

There is some evidence for heterogeneity in attentional processes among individuals with social anxiety. However, there is limited work considering how attentional processes may differ as a mechanism in a naturalistic task-based context (e.g., public speaking). In this secondary analysis we tested attentional heterogeneity among individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (N = 21) in the context of a virtual reality exposure treatment study. Participants completed a public speaking challenge in an immersive 360°-video virtual reality environment with eye tracking at pre-treatment, post-

How do naloxone-based interventions work to reduce overdose deaths: a realist review.

BACKGROUND: Naloxone-based interventions as part of health systems can reverse an opioid overdose. Previous systematic reviews have identified the effectiveness of naloxone; however, the role of context and mechanisms for its use has not been explored. This realist systematic review aims to identify a theory of how naloxone works based on the contexts and mechanisms that contribute to the success of the intervention for improved outcomes. METHODS: Pre-registered at PROSPERO, this realist review followed RAMESES standards of reporting. Keywords included 'naloxone' and ' opioid overdose'. All s

The neural correlates of socio-cognitive factors and eating disorders in young people: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Although the primary aetiology of Eating Disorders (ED) remains unknown, research suggests a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and cultural/environmental factors. This paper aims to systematically review the literature on neuroimaging studies that measure socio-cognitive factors, in the context of body dissatisfaction and EDs in young people. Specifically, our aim was to identify patterns in the findings linked to social media-type behaviours. METHODS: The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. 79

Reducing HIV- and TB-Stigma among healthcare co-workers in South Africa: Results of a cluster randomised trial.

RATIONALE: The HIV and TB co-epidemic has a severe impact on the South African healthcare workforce and health system. HIV- and TB- stigma directed from healthcare workers (HCWs) towards colleagues not only has a negative impact on the mental health and well-being of the HCWs, but has been identified as a barrier to their own health-seeking behaviour. It also increases the strain on the health system due to absenteeism. OBJECTIVE: This cluster-randomised trial tested an intervention to reduce HIV- and TB-stigma among HCWs. The intervention, based on the theory of Diffusion of Innovations cons
