Association of childhood trauma, social support, cognition, and suicidality in females with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental disorder with heavy disease burden. Females with BD are special populations who suffer a lot from childhood trauma, social support, cognitive deficits, and suicidality. In this study, the relationship among childhood trauma, social support, and clinical symptoms of BD was investigated and the risk factors for suicidality were explored in female patients with BD. METHODS: This study included 57 drug-naive female BD patients, 64 female BD patients with long-term medication, and 50 age-matched female healthy controls. Childhood trauma, social

Social activity mediates locus coeruleus tangle-related cognition in older adults.

The locus coeruleus-noradrenaline system regulates brain-wide neural activity involved in cognition and behavior. Integrity of this subcortical neuromodulatory system is proposed to be a substrate of cognitive reserve that may be strengthened by lifetime cognitive and social activity. Conversely, accumulation of tau tangles in the brainstem locus coeruleus nuclei is recently studied as a very early marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis and cognitive vulnerability, even among older adults without cognitive impairment or significant cerebral AD pathologies. This clinical-pathologic stu

Impact of perceived neighborhood social cohesion on vaccination intentions in the post-pandemic era.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between perceived neighborhood social cohesion (NSC) and intentions to obtain seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccines among US adults post COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, nationally representative survey of US residents (N = 2189) in May 2023 on their perceived NSC, COVID-19 and seasonal influenza vaccination intentions, healthcare access, perceived risk of COVID-19 or flu infection, loneliness, and trust in doctors. We used bivariate probit regressions to examine joint associations between perceived NSC and intentions to rec

Chronological trend of social contact patterns in Japan after the emergence of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The social contact data for Japan as of 2022 showed a substantially decreased number of contacts compared with before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is unclear whether social contact continues to be depressed following the end of countermeasures against the pandemic. There is also scarce evidence regarding the influence of influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) on social contacts in Japan. Therefore, this study examined whether the reduction in contact frequency during the pandemic was temporary or persists today and assessed the impact of ILIs on social mixing patterns. METHODS: We

Performance of a score to characterise adequate contact among the social network of persons with TB.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis requires adequate contact between an infectious case and a susceptible host. The aim of this analysis was to validate a recently developed contact score that assessed settings of exposure and relationships between the case and contact. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study from Kampala, Uganda, we estimated the prevalence of tuberculous infection (TBI) in social contacts of adult TB cases according to the setting and relationship domains of the contact score. We calculated the prevalence ratio (PR) for the association between contact scores

How social reinforcement learning can lead to metastable polarisation and the voter model.

Previous explanations for the persistence of polarization of opinions have typically included modelling assumptions that predispose the possibility of polarization (i.e., assumptions allowing a pair of agents to drift apart in their opinion such as repulsive interactions or bounded confidence). An exception is a recent simulation study showing that polarization is persistent when agents form their opinions using social reinforcement learning. Our goal is to highlight the usefulness of reinforcement learning in the context of modeling opinion dynamics, but that caution is required when selectin

Late-life social activity and subsequent risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Social activity is associated with better cognitive health in old age. To better translate epidemiological research for public health communication, we estimated relations of levels of social activity to average age at dementia onset. METHODS: In the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP), we followed 1923 dementia-free older adults and conducted annual clinical evaluations of dementia/mild cognitive impairment (MCI). RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 6.7 (SD = 4.7) years, 545 participants developed dementia, and 695 developed MCI. Using Accelerated Failure Time models adjusted

Specificity of cost and probability biases in social anxiety: Comparing status and belongingness threats.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) is characterized by concerns about the expected occurrence (probability) and anticipated distress (cost) of social threats. Unclear is whether SA correlates specifically with biased expectations of belongingness or status threats. AIMS: We aimed to discern if SA is uniquely tied to biased expectancies of either belongingness or status threats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed 757 participants' perceptions of exclusion and put-down scenarios, analysing associations between SA and threat perceptions. DISCUSSION: Our findings support the status-sensitivity hyp

Decoding Cognitive Control and Cognitive Flexibility as Concomitants for Experiential Avoidance in Social Anxiety.

Background and objectives: Avoidance is regarded as a central hallmark of social anxiety. Experiential avoidance is perilous for social anxiety, specifically among university students (young adults). Additionally, cognitive control and cognitive flexibility are crucial components of executive functions for a fulfilling and healthy lifestyle. The current research is a modest attempt to understand how cognitive flexibility and cognitive control affect the emergence of experiential avoidance in social anxiety in young adults. Methods: Using an ex-post facto design, the Social Phobia Inventory was

Abnormal large-scale brain functional network dynamics in social anxiety disorder.

AIMS: Although static abnormalities of functional brain networks have been observed in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), the brain connectome dynamics at the macroscale network level remain obscure. We therefore used a multivariate data-driven method to search for dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) alterations in SAD. METHODS: We conducted spatial independent component analysis, and used a sliding-window approach with a k-means clustering algorithm, to characterize the recurring states of brain resting-state networks; then state transition metrics and FNC strength in th

Psychological Distress and Social Adjustment of a Working Adult Population with Single-Sided Deafness.

Background: Hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition in the world population that determines emotional, social, and economic costs. In recent years, it has been definitely recognized that the lack of physiological binaural hearing causes alterations in the localization of sounds and reduced speech recognition in noise and reverberation. This study aims to explore the psycho-social profile of adult workers affected by single-sided deafness (SSD), without other major medical conditions and otological symptoms, through comparison to subjects with normal hearing. Methods: This is a cross-secti

Social network-based approaches to HIV testing: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Social network-based testing approaches (SNAs) encourage individuals ("test promoters") to motivate sexual partners and/or those in their social networks to test for HIV. We conducted a systematic review to examine the effectiveness, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of SNA. METHODS: We searched five databases from January 2010 to May 2023, and included studies that compared SNA with non-SNA. We used random-effects meta-analysis to combine effect estimates. Certainty was assessed using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: We identified 47 studies. SNA may increase uptake of HIV test

Social determinants of health and donor site morbidity in head and neck reconstructive limbs.

UNLABELLED: Anterolateral thigh and fibula free tissue transfers are widely used methods of reconstruction in head and neck malignancy, yet the risk factors for donor site morbidity are not well studied. The objective of this study was to characterize anterolateral thigh and fibula free flap donor site morbidity and identify associations with social determinants of health. In 116 patients who underwent anterolateral thigh or fibula free tissue transfer for the reconstruction of head and neck oncologic defects, the presence of a social determinant of health did not lead to an increased rate of

Social Anxiety Reduces Visual Attention to the Eyes of Emotional Faces in Autistic Youth.

Autism and social anxiety (SA) share behavioral features like reduced eye contact, variable social attention, and differences in social interactions. However, the impact of the co-occurrence of these conditions (e.g., autism with co-occurring SA) on social attention remains unknown. Therefore, we evaluated whether the degree of SA characteristics in autistic youth modulated (e.g., amplified or lessened) a core hallmark feature of autism: social attention, or looking at faces. Fifty-four autistic and 35 non-autistic children and adolescents completed a gaze-contingent eye-tracking (ET) paradigm

Social Anxiety and Depression in Portuguese and Spanish Adolescents: The Moderating Role of Emotional Intelligence.

Social anxiety (SA) and depressive disorder usually coexist. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a protective factor against emotional disorders. The aim of this study is to examine the moderating role of EI in the relationship between SA and depression among Spanish and Portuguese adolescents. Information on these variables was collected through a cross-sectional study with 1456 students between 12 and 19 years of age. The software PROCESS was used to perform the analysis of conditional processes (model 1). The moderation model was conducted, including the covariate country, and showed significant

Factors affecting social integration after road traffic orthopaedic injuries in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) leading to long-term disability present a significant public health challenge, causing immense personal and societal consequences. Every year, 50 million people are hurt, 1.2 million die, 30% are permanently disabled, and 14% cannot return to work due to road traffic accidents. However, in many developing countries, information on the social integration of patients post-RTI remains limited. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to social integration following road traffic-related orthopedic injuries (RTOI) in Rwanda. METHODOLOGY: A multicen

The essential and evolving nature of oncology social work: Accomplishments and impact, 2010-present.

This paper demonstrates the essential nature of oncology social work and the critical role that oncology social workers (OSWs) play in the achievement of high-quality cancer care that improves patient outcomes, contains cost, advances population health, reduces provider burn-out among healthcare providers, and does it in a manner that addresses disparities and achieves equity. To this end, this paper's purpose is two-fold: (1) to review and demonstrate OSW contributions to the advancement of comprehensive cancer care over the last 15 years, and (2) to consider next steps for the Association of
