Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) commonly present with component risk factors for cardiometabolic risk and combined risk factors for cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS). These primary risk factors include obesity, dyslipidemia, dysglycemia/insulin resistance, and hypertension. Commonly referred to as "silent killers", cardiometabolic risk and CMS increase the threat of cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death after SCI. This narrative review will examine current data and the etiopathogenesis of cardiometabolic risk, CMS, and cardiovascular disease associated with SCI, focusing on

OBJECTIVES: In spinal cord injury (SCI), the primary mechanical injury is followed by secondary sequelae that develop over the subsequent months and manifests in biochemical, functional, and microstructural alterations, at the site of direct injury but also in the spinal cord tissue above and below the actual lesion site. Noninvasive magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) can be used to assess biochemical modulation occurring in the secondary injury phase, in addition to and supporting conventional MRI, and might help predict and improve patient outcome. In this article, we aimed to examine the

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition that significantly impacts motor, sensory and autonomic function in patients. Despite advances in therapeutic approaches, there is still no curative therapy currently available. Neuroinflammation is a persisting event of the secondary injury phase of SCI that affects functional recovery, and modulation of the inflammatory response towards a beneficial anti-inflammatory state can improve recovery in preclinical SCI models. In human SCI patients, rehabilitative exercise, or motor rehabilitation as we will refer to it from here on out,

Respiratory complications following traumatic spinal cord injury are common and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The inability to cough and clear secretions coupled with weakened respiratory and abdominal muscles commonly leads to respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, and pneumonia. Higher level and severity of the spinal cord injury, history of underlying lung pathology, history of smoking, and poor baseline health status are potential predictors for patients that will experience respiratory complications. For patients who may require prolonged intubation, early tracheostomy

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct proteomic analysis of the sphincter in a neurogenic bladder caused by T10 spinal cord injury. The differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) of the sphincters (internal urethral sphincter) in the neurogenic bladders (NBs) of rats after complete transection of the T10 spinal cord segment were screened using tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantitative labeling, and their biological information was analyzed.
METHODS: Twelve adult Sprague Dawley rats out of 40 were randomly assigned to the blank group (n = 12), while the remaining 28 were placed in the T10 spinal

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification of large joints, such as knees and hips, has been reported after spinal cord injury, possibly leading to decreased activity of daily living due to a limited range of motion of the affected joint. Therefore, heterotopic ossification resection is performed to improve the range of motion, but it might cause massive bleeding as a complication.
METHODS: In this case, the patient had a history of spinal cord injury and developed heterotopic ossification after the left hip injury. He had left hip ankylosis and could not transfer to a wheelchair by himself; theref

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the outcomes of patients with cervical spinal cord injury treated by surgery and their prognostic factors.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 139 patients with cervical spinal cord injury treated by surgery at our hospital, who were admitted between January 2017 and December 2018. Depending on the Barthel index at last follow-up, the patients were divided into the recovery group (n = 60, Barthel index > 45) and the nonrecovery group (n = 79, Barthel index ≤ 45). General information of patients in the two groups was compared. The significant factors were further int

Sex hormones, including androgens and estrogens, play an important role in autonomic, reproductive and sexual behavior. The areas that are important in these behaviors lie within the spinal cord and brainstem. Relevant dysfunctional behavior in patients with altered androgen availability or androgen receptor sensitivity might be explained by the distribution of androgens and their receptors in the central nervous system. We hypothesize that autonomic dysfunction is correlated with the androgen sensitivity of spinal cord and brainstem areas responsible for autonomic functions. In this study, an

Extensive studies on focused ultrasound (FUS)-mediated drug delivery through the blood-brain barrier have been published, yet little work has been published on FUS-mediated drug delivery through the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB). This work aims to quantify the delivery of the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab to rat spinal cord tissue and characterize its distribution within a model of leptomeningeal metastases. 10 healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with FUS + trastuzumab and sacrificed at 2-h or 24-h post-FUS. A human IgG ELISA (Abcam) was used to measure trastuzumab concentration and

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating lesion to the spinal cord, which determines the interruption of ascending/descending axonal tracts, the loss of supraspinal control of sensory-motor functions below the injured site, and severe autonomic dysfunctions, dramatically impacting the quality of life of the patients. After the acute inflammatory phase, the progressive formation of the astrocytic glial scar characterizes the acute-chronic phase: such scar represents one of the main obstacles to the axonal regeneration that, as known, is very limited in the central nervous system (CNS). Unfortu

BACKGROUND: The relative contribution of grey matter (GM) and white matter (WM) degeneration to the progressive brain atrophy in Huntington's disease (HD) has been well studied. The pathology of the spinal cord in HD is comparatively less well documented.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to characterize spinal cord WM abnormalities in a mouse model of HD and evaluate whether selective removal of mutant huntingtin (mHTT) from oligodendroglia rescues these deficits.
METHODS: Histological assessments were used to determine the area of GM and WM in the spinal cord of 12-month-old BACHD mice, while electron mic

INTRODUCTION: Discovering the source of a patient's fever, in the absence of clinical localizing signs, can be a formidable undertaking. Without a clear symptom pattern to narrow the focus of a diagnostic workup, this task can require numerous noninvasive and invasive procedures, imaging studies, and laboratory tests to arrive at a conclusion. Identifying the source of a patient's fever in the setting of an acute spinal cord injury can present a unique challenge because this population is at risk for many different conditions that can cause fever, some of which are rarely seen in the general p

Epidural spinal cord compression (ESCC) secondary to spine metastases is one of the most devastating sequelae of primary cancer as it may lead to muscle weakness, paresthesia, pain, and paralysis. Spine metastases occur through a multistep process that can result in eventual ESCC; however, the lack of a preclinical model to effectively recapitulate each step of this metastatic cascade and the symptom burden of ESCC has limited our understanding of this disease process. In this review, we discuss animal models that best recapitulate ESCC. We start with a broad discussion of commonly used models

The incidence of spinal cord injury (SCI) is ever-growing, resulting in life-changing neurological deficits which can have devastating long-term impacts on a person's quality of life. There is an unmet clinical need for a treatment which will prevent progression of the injury, allowing improved axonal regeneration and functional recovery to occur. The initial mechanical insult, followed by a cascade of secondary mechanisms, leads to the exacerbation and remodelling of the lesion site, thus inhibiting neurological recovery. Oedema rapidly accumulates following SCI and contributes to the detrime
