BACKGROUND: The prevalence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strains causing bloodstream infection (BSI) has not been studied in Korea.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the prevalence of CA-MRSA strains among isolates recovered from patients with MRSA BSIs and to explore epidemiological changes in Korea. We also sought to evaluate clinical characteristics relevant to the development of healthcare-associated BSIs.
METHODS: We prospectively collected consecutive MRSA isolates from patients with BSI at 4 hospitals from July 1 through November 30, 200

Colonisation with meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has previously been described as a risk factor for subsequent infection. MRSA colonisation reached endemic proportions in most healthcare institutions in the UK during the 1990s. Bacteraemia due to MRSA is associated with increased mortality and morbidity compared with meticillin-susceptible S. aureus and national targets have been set for reduction. We present our findings of regular random colonisation surveillance and systematic decolonisation of MRSA carriers over a five-year period with the aim of reducing the pool of car

The success of open irrigation and debridement with component retention (ODCR) for acute periprosthetic knee joint infection varies widely. The species and virulence of the infecting organism have been shown to influence outcome. This multicenter, retrospective study identified 19 cases of acute periprosthetic methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) knee infections managed by ODCR and at least 4 weeks of postoperative intravenous vancomycin therapy. At minimum follow-up of 2 years, the treatment failed to eradicate the infection in 16 cases (84% failure rate). Of those 16 failures,

Overexpression of efflux pump genes conferring multidrug resistance (MDR) in Staphylococcus aureus results in reduced susceptibility to select biocides, dyes and fluoroquinolones. Reserpine is commonly used as an inhibitor of MDR efflux pumps and previous work from our laboratory using a reserpine-based screen to identify clinical isolates with an efflux phenotype revealed that nearly one-half overexpressed norA-B-C, mepA or mdeA. The accuracy of reserpine in predicting efflux pump gene overexpression in clinical strains was examined in detail. Bloodstream isolates of S. aureus previously clas

In this study we describe the prevalence and frequency of risk factors for meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization in emergency admissions during a one-year MRSA screening programme. Overall, 7801/13 826 (56.4%) adult emergency admissions by 6469 patients were screened for MRSA. Of those screened, 670/7801 (8.6%) admissions by 433 patients (6.7%) were colonized with MRSA. Risk factors studied were previous hospital admission, previous MRSA colonization and residence in care homes. Patients with any risk factor (MRSA positive: 366/3952 (9.3%) vs MRSA negative: 67/2450 (2.

Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of joint infections. It also contributes to several other diseases such as pneumonia, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, and sepsis. Bearing in mind that S. aureus becomes rapidly resistant to new antibiotics, many studies survey the virulence factors, with the aim to find alternative prophylaxis/treatment regimens. One potential virulence factor is the bacterial ability to survive at different oxygen tensions. S. aureus expresses ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs), which help it to grow under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, by reducing ribonucleot

Ginsan, an acidic polysaccharide prepared from Panax ginseng, demonstrated multiple immunomodulatory effects in previous studies. This study was conducted to elucidate the antiseptic mechanism induced by ginsan in mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus. When mice were treated with ginsan before the bacterial challenge with S. aureus, they were highly protected from sepsis-induced death. The numbers of S. aureus recovered from ginsan-treated mice were considerably lower than those recovered from nontreated mice. The in vivo depletion of monocytes/macrophages caused more S. aureus to be recove

Menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS) is thought to be associated with colonization with toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1)-producing Staphylococcus aureus in women with insufficient antibody titers. mTSS has been associated with menstruation and tampon use, and although it is rare, the effects can be life threatening. It remains of interest because of the widespread use of tampons, reported to be about 70% of women in the United States, Canada, and much of Western Europe. This comprehensive study was designed to determine S. aureus colonization and TSST-1 serum antibody titers in 3,012 men

This report summarizes data from 35 rabbit model experiments investigating the relationship between in vitro anti-infective catheter coating zones of inhibition and in vivo efficacy. The rabbit model studies involving 15 anti-infective coatings demonstrate an inverse correlation between the sizes of zones of inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus and both the quantity of Staphylococcus aureus removed from the catheter and the risk of a purulent infection. The review of seven previously published clinical trials reveals that the use of anti-infective coated catheters, efficacious in the rabbit mod

The purpose of this study was to determine the apparent prevalence and risk factors of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci (NASM) in bulk tank milk (BTM) obtained from 300 dairy farms that belong to a cooperative collecting milk from Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Dairy field personnel recorded information about selected farm level risk factors and collected and froze BTM samples (n = 300) that were sent to Michigan State University researchers. Milk samples were thawed at room temperature and pre-enriched by adding 1 to 4 mL of Mueller-Hint

Recently, we demonstrated rapid dissemination of different methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clones at the Institute for Microbiology at the University of Magdeburg (B. Ghebremedhin, W. König, and B. König, Eur. J. Clin. Microbiol. Infect. Dis. 24:388-398, 2005). The majority of them harbored the readily transmissible mec cassette type IV. Thus, theoretically, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) might capture the mecA gene from circulating MRSA, or MRSA strains might catch mobile toxin genes from MSSA. Therefore, we characterized MSSA strains circulating at th

AIMS: Dalbavancin is a long-acting lipoglycopeptide with potent activity against Staphylococcus aureus. However, the emergence of reduced dalbavancin susceptibility and its underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood.
METHODS: Dalbavancin MICs were determined for 1803 S. aureus isolates from 37 hospitals in 27 provinces of China. Comparative genomics of a clinical dalbavancin-nonsusceptible (DAL-NS) isolate and in vitro vancomycin-selected derivatives was performed to identify resistance-associated mutations. The role of sagB was assessed by gene deletion and complementation, fol

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) remains associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Interest in penicillin-susceptible S. aureus (PSSA) has re-emerged, but robust epidemiological data and reliable susceptibility testing are needed to guide antibiotic choice.
METHODS: In this multicentre observational study, clinical microbiology laboratories in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland contributed antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) data for S. aureus blood culture isolates collected over six consecutive months in 2024. All laboratories followed EUCAST breakpoints,

Staphylococcus aureus is a major foodborne pathogen capable of producing enterotoxins and exhibiting antimicrobial resistance, posing a significant risk to public health through contaminated dairy products. This study investigated the occurrence of S. aureus isolates recovered from buffalo milk and dairy products, along with the potential presence of selected virulence and resistance gene transcripts. A total of 100 samples, including raw buffalo milk, cream, and cheese, were analyzed using classical microbiological methods. Isolates were characterized phenotypically, and methicillin resistanc

The global burden of disease caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections is escalating, necessitating the urgent development of novel antimicrobial materials that combine safety and high efficacy. Herein, a strategy combining bacterial capture with highly efficient broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity is employed to prepare a series of imidazolium salt chitosan (IMSCs) through a simple method. IMSCs-5 exhibits a capture-kill capability with a low propensity to induce bacterial resistance. It primarily induces bacterial death through intracellular reactive oxygen species generatio

Introduction The rise of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major concern in Australia, particularly affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) people. This study aimed to identify the incidence of MRSA in Indigenous compared to non-Indigenous children with skin and soft tissue abscesses (SSTAs). Methodology Following ethical approval, electronic hospital records were retrospectively reviewed to identify microbiological swabs from patients who underwent incision and drainage of SSTAs at Townsville University Hospital between January 2020 and December 2024

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) pneumonia constitutes a lethal respiratory infection with persistently high clinical mortality. Although programmed cell death (PCD) pathways are implicated in diverse disease processes, their mechanistic roles in S. aureus pneumonia pathogenesis, particularly as dual-purpose biomarkers for early diagnosis and therapeutic targeting remain insufficiently characterized.
METHODS: High-throughput RNA sequencing was conducted on S. aureus challenged murine pulmonary tissues to delineate pneumonia-associated differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Throug
