Characterization of neurohormonal changes following the production of the benign and malignant phases of two-kidney, two-clip Goldblatt hypertension.

The neurohormonal contribution to high blood pressure was investigated in 9 conscious two-kidney, two-clip Goldblatt (2K2C) hypertensive dogs during evolution of the benign and malignant phases after application of bilateral renal clips (BRC). Serial measurements were taken of the plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma angiotensin I-immunoreactivity (Ang I-ir), plasma angiotensin II-ir (Ang II-ir), renin substrate (RS) catecholamines [epinephrine (Epi) and norepinephrine (NE)] and vasopressin (AVP). Immediately after BRC, the elevation of the blood pressure (86 +/- 3 to 110 +/- 3 mmHg, p less tha

Age and the endocrine system.

The pattern of age-induced changes in each endocrine system is unique. Both hormone levels and target organ responsivity are altered in the aging endocrine-cardiovascular system. Serum levels of vasopressor hormones both increase (norepinephrine) and decrease (renin, aldosterone). Target organ responses to beta-adrenergic stimulation in the heart and probably also in vascular smooth muscle decrease due to postreceptor changes. These effects contribute to the clinical problems of hypertension and orthostatic hypotension which characterize the elderly. Aging produces mild carbohydrate intoleranc

Alpha-adrenergic receptor blockade with prazosin. Consideration of hypertension, heart failure, and potential new applications.

Prazosin, an orally active alpha-1 selective adrenergic antagonist, has been of value in treating patients with hypertension and congestive heart failure. In contrast to non-subtype-selective alpha-adrenergic antagonists and direct-acting vasodilators, prazosin's hypotensive action is accompanied by little or no increase in heart, rate, plasma renin, or plasma norepinephrine. Prazosin is a versatile drug that may be used alone or in combination to treat mild, moderate, or severe hypertension. The antihypertensive effect is sustained, and may increase during long-term therapy. The major side ef

Psychodermatology of Chronic Pruritus: An Overview of the Link Between Itch and Distress.

Chronic pruritus (CP) is defined as an unpleasant sensation causing a desire to scratch and lasting > 6 weeks. It has a multifactorial etiology but is more frequently associated with chronic inflammatory dermatoses and systemic disorders. Psychogenic pruritus and neurological disorders are other less common etiologies, while, in some patients, it is idiopathic. CP appears to be processed by non-histaminergic pathway, contributing to its complexity and therapeutic challenge. Moreover, regardless of the etiology, it is multidimensional, including cognitive, motivational and affective components.

The association between stress, emotional states, and tinnitus: a mini-review.

Extensive literature supporting the view of tinnitus induced stress in patients is available. However, limited evidence has been produced studying the opposite, that is, does stress cause tinnitus? The hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis, one of the main neuroendocrine systems involved in stress response, is commonly disturbed in tinnitus patients. Patients with chronic tinnitus have been shown to develop abnormal responses to psycho-social stress, where the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis response is weaker and delayed, suggesting chronic stress contributes to the development of chronic t

A guide to identify cervical autonomic dysfunctions (and associated conditions) in patients with musculoskeletal disorders in physical therapy practice.

BACKGROUND: Differential diagnosis is a hot topic in physical therapy, especially for those working in a direct access setting dealing with neck pain and its associated disorders. All international guidelines agree in recommending to first rule out non-musculoskeletal pathologies as the cause of signs and symptoms in the patient. Although the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has a crucial role and is also involved in pain conditions, coverage of it in neuroscience textbooks and educational programmes is limited and most healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with it. Although autonomic conditio

Altered cardiorespiratory regulation during exercise in patients with Parkinson's disease: A challenging non-motor feature.

The incidence of Parkinson's disease is increasing worldwide. The motor dysfunctions are the hallmark of the disease, but patients also experience non-motor impairments, and over 40% of the patients experience coexistent abnormalities, such as orthostatic hypotension. Exercise training has been suggested as a coping resource to alleviate Parkinson's disease symptoms and delay disease progression. However, the body of knowledge is showing that the cardiovascular response to exercise in patients with Parkinson's disease is altered. Adequate cardiovascular and hemodynamic adjustments to exercise

Autoinflammatory and autoimmune contributions to complex regional pain syndrome.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a highly enigmatic syndrome typically developing after injury or surgery to a limb. Severe pain and disability are common among those with chronic forms of this condition. Accumulating evidence suggests that CRPS may involve both autoinflammatory and autoimmune components. In this review article, evidence for dysfunction of both the innate and adaptive immune systems in CRPS is presented. Findings from human studies in which cytokines and other inflammatory mediators were measured in the skin of affected limbs are discussed. Additional results from stud

Brain metabolic sensing and metabolic signaling at the level of an astrocyte.

Astrocytes support neuronal function by providing essential structural and nutritional support, neurotransmitter trafficking and recycling and may also contribute to brain information processing. In this article we review published results and report new data suggesting that astrocytes function as versatile metabolic sensors of central nervous system (CNS) milieu and play an important role in the maintenance of brain metabolic homeostasis. We discuss anatomical and functional features of astrocytes that allow them to detect and respond to changes in the brain parenchymal levels of metabolic su

Physiology and Pharmacology of Ejaculation.

Ejaculation is the final stage of coitus in mammalian male and is mandatory for natural procreation. Two synchronized phases, emission and expulsion, form the ejaculatory response and involve specific organs and anatomical structures. The peripheral events leading to ejaculation are commanded by autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic) and somatic divisions of the nervous system. The autonomic and somatic motor efferents originate in spinal nuclei located in thoracolumbar and lumbosacral segments. Co-ordinated activation of autonomic and somatic spinal nuclei is orchestrated by a group of l

Angiotensin peptides and nitric oxide in cardiovascular disease.

SIGNIFICANCE: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important role in the normal control of cardiovascular and renal function in the healthy state and is a contributing factor in the development and progression of various types of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including hypertension, diabetes, and heart failure. RECENT ADVANCES: Evidence suggests that a balance between activation of the ACE/Ang II/AT1 receptor axis and the ACE2/Ang-(1-7)/Mas receptor axis is important for the function of the heart, kidney, and autonomic nervous system control of the circulation in the normal healthy st

In vivo requirement of TGF-beta/GDNF cooperativity in mouse development: focus on the neurotrophic hypothesis.

Neurotrophic factors are well-recognized extracellular signaling molecules that regulate neuron development including neurite growth, survival and maturation of neuronal phenotypes in the central and peripheral nervous system. Previous studies have suggested that TGF-beta plays a key role in the regulation of neuron survival and death and potentiates the neurotrophic activity of several neurotrophic factors, most strikingly of GDNF. To test the physiological relevance of this finding, TGF-beta2/GDNF double mutant (d-ko) mice were generated. Double mutant mice die at birth like single mutants d

Review article: pathogenesis and pathophysiology of hepatorenal syndrome--is there scope for prevention?

The hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a functional impairment of the kidneys in chronic liver disease caused by a circulatory failure. The prognosis is poor, particularly with type 1 HRS, but also type 2, and only liver transplantation is of lasting benefit. However, recent research into the pathophysiology of ascites and HRS has stimulated new enthusiasm in their prevention and treatment. Patients with HRS have hyperdynamic circulatory dysfunction with reduced arterial blood pressure and reduced central blood volume, owing to preferential splanchnic arterial vasodilatation. Activation of potent v

Synthetic capsaicin reversibly impairs vasopressin-mediated blood pressure recovery.

The vasopressin-mediated recovery of arterial pressure observed in adult rats following pharmacological blockade of the sympathetic nervous and renin-angiotensin systems is reduced by neonatal capsaicin treatment. We now demonstrate a similar but reversible effect following treatment of adult Wistar or Sprague-Dawley rats with N-vanillylnonanamide (50 mg/kg sc). One day after treatment, Wistar, but typically not Sprague-Dawley, rats had lost weight and exhibited increased sensitivity to the anesthetic effects of methohexital sodium. In both strains, captopril treatment caused hypotension. Afte

[Myocardial damage (myocytolysis) caused by subarachnoid hemorrhage].

A case of subarachnoid hemorrhage complicated by neurogenic pulmonary edema and neurogenic myocardial damage is reported. A 50-year-old woman was admitted following the sudden onset of headache and disturbance of consciousness due to a ruptured internal carotid posterior communicating artery aneurysm on the right side. She showed respiratory failure due to pulmonary edema, which subsequently improved with the mechanical ventilation. After that, she manifested chest distress and hypotensive episode then occurred. An ECG showed QS wave and ST elevation which suggested the presence of inferolater

Cardiovascular alterations associated with bursts of panting in the exercising dog.

1. In conscious dogs exercising on a treadmill variations in arterial blood pressure and heart rate which were correlated with bursts of panting were observed. The blood pressure variations reflected similar variations in the total peripheral vascular resistance.2. During exercise a change in respiration from slow breathing to panting was followed by a systemic vasodilatation and fall in blood pressure, but a rise in heart rate. Analysis of the time course of these effects demonstrated that the heart rate increase occurred later than the blood pressure fall.3. The correlation between panting a
