Effects of motion and b-value on apparent temperature measurement by diffusion-based thermometry MRI: eye vitreous study.

PURPOSE: To make noninvasive measurements of temperature in the posterior chamber (vitreous) of the eye using diffusion-based thermometry (DBT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to explain variability in these measurements due to choice of b-value and the effects of motion. METHODS: Phantom studies of human vitreous and distilled water were performed using b-values from 0 to 1500 s/mm2 to determine the liquid-specific calibration factor for vitreous as well as to determine the temperature offsets due to sampling the diffusion curve using three higher routine clinical b-values (b = 0, 500,

Smartphone Application-Enabled Apple Fruit Surface Temperature Monitoring Tool for In-Field and Real-Time Sunburn Susceptibility Prediction.

Heat stress and resulting sunburn is a major abiotic stress in perineal specialty crops. For example, such stress to the maturing fruits on apple tree canopies can cause several physiological disorders that result in considerable crop losses and reduced marketability of the produce. Thus, there is a critical technological need to effectively monitor the abiotic stress under field conditions for timely actuation of remedial measures. Fruit surface temperature (FST) is one of the stress indicators that can reliably be used to predict apple fruit sunburn susceptibility. This study was therefore f

Live vaccine preserved at room temperature: Preparation and characterization of a freeze-dried classical swine fever virus vaccine.

The heat-stable live-attenuated classical swine fever virus (CSFV) vaccine is an urgent need in many countries of Asia, Europe and Latin America. In this study, the thermostability of lyophilized live-attenuated CSFV vaccine formulations were investigated using accelerated stability at 37 °C for 10 days. The freeze-dried heat-stable formulation ST16, containing excipient combinations of trehalose, glycine, thiourea and phosphate buffer shows the superior thermostability. Moreover, the lyophilized vaccine with formula ST16 kept loss of viral activity less than 0.5 log10 during 24 months at stor

Effect of temperature on phenanthrene accumulation from hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Hydraulic fracturing has become widely used in recent years to access vast global unconventional sources of oil and gas. This process involves the injection of proprietary mixtures of water and chemicals to fracture shale formations and extract the hydrocarbons trapped within. These injection fluids, along with minerals, hydrocarbons, and saline waters present within the formations being drilled into, return to the surface as flowback and produced water (FPW). FPW is a highly complex mixture, containing metals, salts and clay, as well as many organic chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hy

Active cooling temperature required to achieve therapeutic hypothermia correlates with short-term outcome in neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

KEY POINTS: Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) affects 2-4/1000 live term births. Treatment with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) improves the long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of neonates with moderate to severe HIE. However, early prediction of outcome still remains challenging, and no reliable and easily obtainable biomarker has been identified to date. Neonates with HIE display impaired thermoregulation, resulting in spontaneous hypothermia. The degree of cooling required to achieve TH may therefore act as a biomarker of injury severity. The present study demonstrates a correlation betw

Meat quality assessment using Au patch electrode Ag-SnO2/SiO2/Si MIS capacitive gas sensor at room temperature.

An Au patch electrode Ag-SnO2/SiO2/Si MIS capacitive sensor equipped with a microcontroller was designed and developed to sense low concentration (ppb to ppm regime) of volatiles (NH3, TMA, ethanol, and H2S) generated from chicken meat spoilage at room temperature. The quality threshold or the acceptance limit for consumption of chicken meat samples stored at 4 °C, 15 °C and 25 °C using our proposed technique was found to be 105 h, 48 h, and 17 h respectively, highly correlated with TVB-N, TVC, pH and sensory evaluation analysis. When these well established standard methods (TVB-N, TVC and pH

Season Affects Yield and Metabolic Profiles of Rice (Oryza sativa) under High Night Temperature Stress in the Field.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the main food source for more than 3.5 billion people in the world. Global climate change is having a strong negative effect on rice production. One of the climatic factors impacting rice yield is asymmetric warming, i.e., the stronger increase in nighttime as compared to daytime temperatures. Little is known of the metabolic responses of rice to high night temperature (HNT) in the field. Eight rice cultivars with contrasting HNT sensitivity were grown in the field during the wet (WS) and dry season (DS) in the Philippines. Plant height, 1000-grain weight and harvest ind

Low temperature, easy scaling up method for development of smart nanostructure hybrid lipid capsules for drug delivery application.

Lipid Nanocapsules (LNCs) have been used for drug delivery in cells and animal models for several years. LNCs with unique physicochemical properties for favorable biorecognition, biocompatibility and stimuli responsive (pH/temperature etc.) properties i.e., smart-LNCs, are most promising for future nanomedicine applications. However, conventional phase inversion temperature (PIT) method of LNCs preparation may not be suitable for the fabrication of thermally labile drug loaded LNCs and smart-LNCs. Herein, we report for the first time, a novel low temperature (LT) method for the preparation of

Gas Phase Electrodeposition Enabling the Programmable Three-Dimensional Growth of a Multimodal Room Temperature Nanobridge Gas Sensor Array.

Parallel three-dimensional (3D) growth of different nanomaterials with submicrometer resolution is a promising approach to overcome some technological and economic limits encountered in planar integrated homogeneous films. The programmable multimaterial gas phase nanoparticle electrodeposition concept enables the fabrication of a 3D multimodal conductometric gas sensor array. The approach requires the deposition of more than one nanomaterial to achieve orthogonal sensing capabilities and multigas sensitivity and selectivity. The demonstrated "electronic nose"-like array contains 1080 self-alig

A temperature-dependent conformational shift in p38α MAPK substrate-binding region associated with changes in substrate phosphorylation profile.

Febrile-range hyperthermia worsens and hypothermia mitigates lung injury, and temperature dependence of lung injury is blunted by inhibitors of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Of the two predominant p38 isoforms, p38α is proinflammatory and p38β is cytoprotective. Here, we analyzed the temperature dependence of p38 MAPK activation, substrate interaction, and tertiary structure. Incubating HeLa cells at 39.5 °C stimulated modest p38 activation, but did not alter tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα)-induced p38 activation. In in vitro kinase assays containing activated p38α and MAPK-activ

A Computational Thermodynamics-Assisted Development of Sn-Bi-In-Ga Quaternary Alloys as Low-Temperature Pb-Free Solders.

Low-temperature lead (Pb)-free solders are demanding in the electronic packaging industry, because it would open the door for various economic choices of polymeric materials as substrates and also revives the lower cost processes. Here, we proposed a tin⁻bismuth⁻indium⁻gallium (Sn-52.5Bi-2.68In-1Ga, SBIG (in wt.%)) quaternary low-temperature solder, designed based on systematic CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram)-type thermodynamic calculations and corresponding key experiments. The solidification behavior of SBIG was carefully elaborated based on the computations using the lever rule and t

Construction of ZnO/SnO2 Heterostructure on Reduced Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Nitrogen Dioxide Sensitive Performances at Room Temperature.

The employment of n-n homotypic heterogeneous junctions is an efficient method to improve sensitive performance of metal oxide-based gas sensors owing to the generation of charge accumulation regions. Herein, in order to further enhance nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing properties of the sensors based on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) at room temperature (RT), n-type ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) decorated n-type SnO2 NPs heterojunctions were successfully constructed on RGO nanosheets (NSs) by combination of the hydrothermal method and the wet-chemical deposition method. The formation of heterostructures

Ski-Everest (8848 m) Expedition: Digit Skin Temperature Responses to Cold Immersion May Reflect Susceptibility to Cold Injury.

INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that individual susceptibility to freezing cold injury might be reflected in an attenuated cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) response by comparing the CIVD responses of an elite alpinist with a history of freezing cold injury in the feet (case alpinist) with those of an age- and ability- matched noninjured alpinists control group (controls). According to this hypothesis, the vasomotor responses to a CIVD test of the case alpinist would represent a pathophysiological response when compared with the normal physiological response of a noninjured cohort. Assessing the Usability of an Automated Continuous Temperature Monitoring Device (iThermonitor) in Pediatric Patients: Non-Randomized Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Fever is an important vital sign and often the first one to be assessed in a sick child. In acutely ill children, caregivers are expected to monitor a child's body temperature at home after an initial medical consult. Fever literacy of many caregivers is known to be poor, leading to fever phobia. In children with a serious illness, the responsibility of periodically monitoring temperature can add substantially to the already stressful experience of caring for a sick child. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of using the iThermonitor, an auto

The external genitalia in juvenile Caiman latirostris differ in hormone sex determinate-female from temperature sex determinate-female.

The broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) is a crocodilian species that inhabits South American wetlands. As in all other crocodilians, the egg incubation temperature during a critical thermo-sensitive window (TSW) determines the sex of the hatchlings, a phenomenon known as temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). In C. latirostris, we have shown that administration of 17-β-estradiol (E2) during the TSW overrides the effect of the male-producing temperature, producing phenotypic females (E2SD-females). Moreover, the administration of E2 during TSW has been proposed as an alternative

Faecal glucocorticoid metabolites and body temperature in Australian merino ewes (Ovis aries) during summer artificial insemination (AI) program.

Reproductive wastage is a key issue for sheep producers, both regionally and globally. The reproductive output of farm animals can be influenced by physiological and environmental factors. Rapid and reliable quantification of physiological stress can provide a useful tool for designing and testing on-farm management interventions to improve farm animal welfare and productivity. In this study, we quantified physiological stress non-invasively using faecal glucocorticoid metabolites-FGMs analysis and body temperature measurements of 15 superovulated donor merino ewes (Ovis aries) during particip

Controlled-temperature photothermal and oxidative bacteria killing and acceleration of wound healing by polydopamine-assisted Au-hydroxyapatite nanorods.

UNLABELLED: Since skin wounds are subject to bacterial infection and tissue regeneration may be impeded, there is demand for biomaterials that possess rapid bactericidal and tissue repair capability. Herein we report in situ promotion of wound healing by a photothermal therapy (PTT) assisted nanocatalytic antibacterial system utilizing a polydopamine (PDA) coating on hydroxyapatite (HAp) incorporated with gold nanoparticles (Au-HAp). The PDA@Au-HAp NPs produce hydroxyl radicals (OH) via catalysis of a small concentration of H2O2 to render bacteria more vulnerable to the temperature change. The

Colloidal stability and aggregation kinetics of biochar colloids: Effects of pyrolysis temperature, cation type, and humic acid concentrations.

An understanding of biochar colloid aggregation and stability in aqueous environments is critical for assessing biochar fate and mobility in the soil. The aggregation kinetics of wheat straw-derived biochar colloids pyrolyzed at two temperatures 300 and 600 °C (WB300 and WB600 colloids, respectively) were investigated in monovalent and divalent electrolyte solutions in absence/presence of humic acid (HA). Results show that the critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) of WB300 colloids in NaCl and CaCl2 solutions were 274 and 61.4 mM, which were higher than those (183 mM for NaCl and 38.1 mM
