Evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT-based interpretations of maxillary impacted canines compared to those of conventional radiography: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has become widespread in diagnosing impacted teeth in the context of orthodontic treatment. However, the diagnostic accuracy of this 3D imaging tool has not been comprehensively evaluated yet. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of employing CBCT imaging in the three-dimensional (3D) localization of maxillary impacted canines compared to the use of traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging, and (2) to calculate sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy values for specific variables assessed

Vertical root fracture resistance and crack formation of root canal-treated teeth restored with different post-luting systems.

The aim was to investigate the vertical root fracture (VRF) resistance and crack formation of root canal-treated teeth restored with different post-luting systems. Human maxillary lateral incisors of similar size were decoronated, assigned to five groups (n = 18, power = 0.9) and embedded in acrylic blocks with artificial periodontal ligament. After root canal filling, post spaces were prepared to place coated fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) or sandblasted titanium (Ti) posts of the same shape and size. Half of the posts were zinc phosphate cemented (C), while the other half was adhesively lu

Dentinal translucency and width of cementum: predicting the age over 55 years in South Indian adults using extracted sectioned teeth.

The main intention of this article was to evaluate the reliability of root dentine translucency (RDT) and the width of cementum (CW) in indicating the age over 55 years in forensic and criminal investigations. 600 non-restored, single rooted teeth (300 males and 300 females) which were extracted for periodontal or orthodontic reasons were collected. Each tooth was sectioned longitudinally until the desired thickness (250 µm) was obtained. Both the length of the RDT and CW were measured from these unstained ground sections of teeth using ImageJ computer software. Pearson's correlation coefficie

Guidance for the Clinical Management of Impacted Maxillary Canines.

In this study of orthodontic and surgical management of impacted maxillary canines, the current literature is reviewed and a decision tree is presented to assist clinicians in determining the optimal treatment based on available evidence. Impacted canines have a prevalence of 2% and are more common in females. Palatal impactions are present in around 75% of cases. These trends are observed worldwide with small variations in different populations. Diagnosis through clinical examination and conventional imaging can be complemented with cone-beam computed tomography imaging when necessary. Early

Root Coverage with Connective Tissue Graft in Patients with Thin Periodontal Biotype: A Case Series with 12-month Follow-up.

Preoperative gingival thickness is an important factor in the success of complete root coverage. Here, two cases are reported in which a biotype probe was used to assess the periodontal biotype before performance of a root coverage procedure. Clinical examinations were performed at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. The following clinical parameters were evaluated: probing depth, recession height, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, and width of keratinized gingiva. At baseline and at 12 months postoperatively, periodontal biotype was estimated using the biotype p

Minimum size and positioning of imaging field for CBCT scans of impacted maxillary canines.

OBJECTIVES: In children and adolescents, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is frequently used for localization of unerupted or impacted teeth in the anterior maxilla. CBCT causes a higher radiation dose than conventional intraoral and panoramic imaging. The objective was to analyze the location of impacted canines in a three-dimensional coordinate and thereby optimize the CBCT field-of-view (FOV), for radiation dose reduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Location of 50 impacted maxillary canines of children under 17 years was retrospectively evaluated from CBCT scans. The minimum and maximum di

Dental implications in Hajdu-Cheney syndrome: A novel case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the molecular genetic etiology of an individual with a dysmorphic face, unusual teeth mobility, and root resorption. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: DNA samples were collected from a trio of family members, and whole-exome sequencing was performed. RESULTS: Mutational analysis revealed a de novo mutation (c.6787C>T) in the last exon of the NOTCH2 gene. This mutation would introduce a premature stop codon [p.(Gln2263*)] and generate a truncated protein without C-terminus, escaping from the nonsense-mediated decay system. Sanger sequencing confirmed that this mutation was generate

[The applications of periodontal gingival surgery. Ⅱ: alternative materials].

The main purposes of periodontal graft surgery include achieving root coverage, improving the clinical attachment level and keratinized tissue, and advancing the procedure of periodontal plastic surgery. Autogenous graft, such as subepithelial connective tissue graft-based procedure, provide the best outcomes for mean and complete root coverage, as well as increase in keratinized tissue. However, a disadvantage of the procedure is in the location of the operation itself: the additional surgical site (palate). Therefore, clinicians are always looking for graft substitutes. This article will dis

Modified Double-Papillae Flap Technique With Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft for Root Coverage in the Esthetic Zone: Case Report.

Gingival recession can compromise the esthetic appearance, leading to functional problems, hypersensitivity, and root caries. Several techniques have been implicated for root coverage, which includes pedicle grafts, free gingival grafts, connective tissue grafts, and guided-tissue regeneration. The double-papillae flap associated with subepithelial connective tissue is a predictable technique to cover isolated areas with insufficient attached gingiva apical to a recession. This case report demonstrates a surgical alternative to the technique using a sling periosteal suture to stabilize the con

Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft in Combination with a Tunnel Technique for the Treatment of Miller Class II and III Gingival Recessions in Mandibular Incisors: Clinical and Esthetic Results.

There is limited evidence regarding the effect of the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) on root coverage in the mandibular anterior region. A sample of 15 Miller Class II and III recessions were treated in 15 patients using a SCTG with a tunnel technique. After a mean follow-up of 20.53 months, the mean percentage of root coverage was 83.25% for all treated recessions. Furthermore, a statistically significant increase of keratinized tissue was observed at the end of the evaluation period (2.66 mm; P = .001). The combination of tunnel technique and SCTG should be considered a treatme

Gingival coverage of iatrogenically denuded labial bone resulting from thermal trauma.

Damage to periodontal tissue as a result of thermal injury often causes severe gingival recession and denuded alveolar bone. In this case report, two patients undergoing gingival coverage of iatrogenically denuded labial bone associated with the maxillary central incisor and the lateral incisor are presented. The first patient had gingival necrosis and labial alveolar bone exposure on the maxillary left central incisor and was referred from a local dental clinic. The patient had undergone root canal treatment 2 weeks previously. The gingival necrosis was assumed to be caused by a heated plugge
