Digital Twin Technology In Radiology.

A digital twin is a computational model that provides a virtual representation of a specific physical object, system, or process and predicts its behavior at future time points. These simulation models form computational profiles for new diagnosis and prevention models. The digital twin is a concept borrowed from engineering. However, the rapid evolution of this technology has extended its application across various industries. In recent years, digital twins in healthcare have gained significant traction due to their potential to revolutionize medicine and drug development. In the context of r

Sensorless Junction Temperature Estimation of Onboard SiC MOSFETs Using Dual-Gate-Bias-Triggered Third-Quadrant Characteristics.

Silicon carbide (SiC) metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are a future trend in traction inverters in electric vehicles (EVs), and their thermal safety is crucial. Temperature-sensitive electrical parameters' (TSEPs) indirect detection normally requires additional circuits, which can interfere with the system and increase costs, thereby limiting applications. Therefore, there is still a lack of cost-effective and sensorless thermal monitoring techniques. This paper proposes a high-efficiency datasheet-driven method for sensorless estimation utilizing the third-quadrant

Evaluation of Scleral Adjustment Method: A Novel Adjustable Suture Technique in Strabismus Surgery.

To determine whether passing a pole suture through the sclera at two points provides fixation comparable to that of a sliding noose, we measured the tensile strength of the suture‒sclera interface during simulated traction. In this in vitro study, three suture patterns were evaluated in porcine eyeballs, using 6-0 polyglycolic acid sutures. Patterns A (control), B (second suture pass perpendicular), and C (second suture pass in the same direction) were compared. The tensile strength of each pattern was measured 20 times using a KANON TK300CN, and the results were analyzed using the Kruskal‒Wal

Strategic Combinations of Antibody-Drug Conjugates from 2023 to 2025: From Dual Therapies to Innovative ADC-Based Regimens.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are a potent class of targeted cancer therapies that combine the specificity of monoclonal antibodies with the cytotoxic potency of chemotherapeutic agents. By targeting tumor cells with minimal impact on healthy tissues, ADCs achieve a favorable balance between efficacy and systemic toxicity. This therapeutic modality has demonstrated significant clinical success, as evidenced by the FDA approval of 15 ADCs by 2025, with one later withdrawn due to safety concerns, and indications continuing to expand across various cancer types. Beyond monotherapy, there is gro

Improving Hydrogen Selectivity in Semiconductor Metal Oxide Gas Sensors with Cellulose Nanocrystal Membranes.

As hydrogen (H2) gains traction as a clean energy carrier, the need for reliable and selective gas sensors becomes increasingly urgent, particularly for detecting H2 leaks amidst complex gas environments. While semiconducting metal oxide (SMOX)-based sensors are attractive due to their low cost and high sensitivity, their poor selectivity remains a major limitation. In this work, we address this challenge by integrating a gas-selective membrane into the sensor packaging, without altering the sensing material itself. The membrane is produced in situ by drop-casting a suspension of cellulose nan

Cricothyroid Approximation Surgery (Type IV Thyroplasty): Insights From Failure Cases and an Analysis of Contributing Factors Using Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography.

Type IV thyroplasty (TP IV) is commonly regarded as a simple surgical procedure to raise the pitch of the speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) by lengthening the vocal folds through the approximation of the thyroid and cricoid cartilages. However, we report two cases in which TP IV was unsuccessful due to excessive shortening of the cricothyroid distance as analyzed by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT). One case was performed under general anesthesia and the other under local anesthesia. In normal high-pitched phonation, the rotational movement of the thyroid and cricoid cartilages

Advances in conduction system pacing and implications for congenital heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Conduction system pacing (CSP) is redefining management of patients requiring permanent pacing by offering a more physiologic alternative to subpulmonary ventricular pacing and conventional cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). While most evidence stems from acquired heart disease, CSP is gaining traction in congenital heart disease, where traditional pacing can exacerbate dyssynchrony and lead to long-term ventricular dysfunction. AREAS COVERED: This review examines the role of CSP in congenital heart disease, focusing on anatomical variability of the atrioventricular conduc

Laryngo-pharyngeal-vertebral extirpation: a radical multidisciplinary surgical approach to managing complications from oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treatment. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: A 76-year-old female presented with rigid cervical sagittal plane deformity, myelopathy, chronic aspiration, and dysphonia. This was complicated by a past medical history of partial laryngectomy and neck irradiation for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Severe rigid cervical kyphosis resulted in impaired horizontal gaze and progressive myelopathy. She had worsening chronic aspiration and dysphonia secondary to an esophageal fistula into the prevertebral space. OBSERVATIONS: The authors performed a two-stage, multidisciplinary surgery combining neurosurgical and otolaryngologi

Proximity-Based Super-Resolution Imaging Enabled by DNA Base-Stacking Interactions.

Super-resolution imaging has gained significant traction in recent years due to its unprecedented ability to visualize target biomolecules at nanometer resolution. Here, the capability is demonstrated to detect target pairs that are in close proximity by exploiting base-stacking interactions between two DNA strands, each labelling one target. The DNA probes hybridize transiently with the each other only when both target molecules are proximal, thus creating a hybridization site for fluorophore-conjugated DNA strand, called imager. In this design, hybridization and co-axial base-stacking act sy

Management of Transvenous Leads in Patients With Iatrogenic Lead Perforation.

INTRODUCTION: Iatrogenic lead perforation is a rare but serious complication of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation. Evidence on percutaneous management of subacute or delayed cases remains limited. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 38 patients treated for iatrogenic lead perforation between January 2012 and October 2024. Acute lead perforation cases, which were managed during the implantation procedure, were excluded. Lead removal was performed under imaging guidance in either the electrophysiology (EP) lab or a hybrid operating room (OR) with surgical backup. Clinic

Vitreoretinal Injury Associated with Sports Ball Ocular Trauma.

Sports are a common cause of ocular trauma. Vitreoretinal injuries secondary to sports ball trauma can cause permanent vision loss and may be a source of significant morbidity. Trauma most frequently occurs in young males and over half of injuries involve the posterior segment. Injuries typically occur as a result of direct contact with the globe either before or after initial contact with the orbit and are dependent on the size, mass, and velocity of the ball. Compressive forces and subsequent equatorial expansion lead to direct tissue damage and dehiscence of posterior segment layers. Smalle

Feasibility of redo endoscopic microvascular decompression for recurrent trigeminal neuralgia: An illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is often treated with microvascular decompression (MVD), providing long-term pain relief for most patients. However, a subset experiences recurrence requiring reoperation. Endoscopic MVD techniques have gained traction due to enhanced visualization and potentially lower morbidity, yet their feasibility for redo procedures - particularly in complex cases with dense adhesions - remains uncertain. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 63-year-old male who initially presented with Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) grade V TN in the V2-V3 distribution. A

The saline-immersion/irrigation technique for endoscopic submucosal dissection of a challenging colonic lesion using double-balloon endoscopy and a novel type of advanced imaging.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) offers effective en bloc resection of large colorectal lesions but can be technically challenging, especially for lesions with poor access. This video showcases successful use of the saline-immersion/irrigation technique (SITE), double-balloon endoscopy (DBE), and a novel type of advanced imaging for resection of such a lesion in a patient with a long sigmoid colon that compromised stability. METHODS: A 64-year-old woman underwent ESD for an 80-mm Paris 0-Is lesion within the transverse colon. DBE was used to enhance access and stabi

Endoscopic surgical strategy for highly vascular pediatric sinonasal and pterygopalatine fossa tumors.

Pediatric sinonasal tumors are rare, and minimally invasive approaches are preferred because of unknown long-term effects on development. We report three cases of highly vascular pediatric sinonasal and pterygopalatine fossa tumors that were successfully removed using an endonasal endoscopic approach with transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE). The patients (9-11 years old) had contrast-enhanced tumors in the left ethmoid sinus near the sphenopalatine foramen in case 1, in the right nasal cavity near the sphenopalatine foramen in case 2, and in the right pterygopalatine fossa in case 3, wit

New Surgical Devices for Closed Reduction of Frontal Sinus Bone Fracture.

Traditional surgical interventions for frontal sinus fractures necessitate a cut on the forehead skin, and extant closed reduction techniques aimed at enhancing accessibility continue to grapple with secure tool fixation, stable bone elevation, and screw breakage risk. To address these challenges and augment surgical efficiency, this study introduces novel surgical devices. Design parameters for models with spiral or L-shaped tips are established, considering practical medical requirements and constraints, and subsequently validated through finite element method numerical simulations using com
