Noninvasive surrogate endpoints in MASH trials: current perspectives and challenges.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a leading cause of cirrhosis and liver-related morbidity. Current regulatory pathways rely on histology and long-term clinical outcomes, but repeated liver biopsy is noninvasive and poorly reproducible; regulators have signaled interest in noninvasive tests (NITs) as surrogate endpoints. METHODS: This review synthesizes contemporary regulatory perspectives, the evidentiary framework for biomarker qualification, and the published performance of leading noninvasive tests (vibration-controlled transient elastography [VCTE], m

Respiratory Physiotherapy Techniques in Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Certain physiological characteristics increase the susceptibility of newborns, particularly preterm infants, to pulmonary collapse. In addition, newborns are prone to the accumulation of airway secretions, which, even in small volumes, can compromise respiratory function. Consequently, breathing therapy plays a crucial role in promoting airway clearance and supporting effective ventilation in this population. This scoping review aimed to map the breathing therapy methods used for newborns admitted to intensive care units and also to identify the clinical outcomes assess

Wernicke's encephalopathy in mixed connective tissue disease triggered by persistent vomiting: a case report and literature review.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is an acute, reversible but potentially disabling neurological syndrome caused by thiamine deficiency. It is increasingly recognized in non-alcoholic settings, particularly when persistent vomiting, poor intake, malabsorption, or systemic illness rapidly depletes limited thiamine stores. Patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) may be vulnerable because esophageal/gastrointestinal dysmotility, gastroesophageal reflux, chronic inflammation, and reduced oral intake can overlap and obscure nutritional complications. A 38-year-old woman with a 4-year hist

Understanding Blood-Injection-Injury Phobia: Do Not Miss the Point.

Needle and blood-injection-injury phobia is commonly encountered in the perioperative setting. It can significantly disrupt operating room throughput, increase healthcare costs, cause delays in care, and lead to patient disengagement with the healthcare system. These phobias, which involve intense fear and anxiety about needles and blood, can increase procedural risks, requiring interventions such as anxiolysis, sedation, and alternative behavioral health interventions to manage patient distress. Blood-injection-injury phobia is notably prevalent in females, with most individuals developing it

Spinal H-Sign in Syphilitic Myelitis Mimicking MOGAD.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) is classically associated with aquaporin-4 antibody-mediated neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). The "H-sign," reflecting gray matter involvement, is considered suggestive of MOGAD. However, infectious etiologies, including neurosyphilis, may rarely mimic autoimmune inflammatory myelopathies radiologically. CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old man presented with 6 months of erectile dysfunction and urinary retention, followed by progressive gait instability.

Non-porous silica nanoparticles as a cavitation sensitive vehicle for antibiotic delivery.

Ultrasound stimulated drug delivery is attractive for controlled dose and localised delivery to reduce excess loss of drug and side effects, which for antibiotics is pertinent to the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Low frequency ultrasound is commonly used in dental clinical practice for bacterial biofilm removal and is an attractive versatile stimulus for drug release. Here we introduce nonporous (amorphous) silica nanoparticles as a biocompatible, encapsulant for triggered drug release by low frequency ultrasound. A 20 kHz ultrasonic sonotrode is used in to evaluate the release of th

Self-driven piezotronic effect enhances the photocatalytic bactericidal activity of polyvinylidene fluoride/bismuth sulfide.

The antimicrobial properties of dressings are critical for wound recovery, as they serve as the first line of defense against microbial invasion. In this study, bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) was synthesized and immobilized onto a piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber membrane to achieve enhanced photocatalytic sterilization efficacy. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses unambiguously verified that Bi2S3 formed a nanosheet structure on the PVDF surface. The specific surface area of the PVDF/Bi2S3 composite was measured to be 175.3 m2·g-1, indicating

A Comprehensive Investigation into the Mechanism Governing the ESDPT Behavior of Bis-3,6-(2-benzoxazolyl)pyrocatechol Regulated by Solvent Effects and Chalcogen Substitutions.

In this study, we investigated bis-3,6-(2-benzoxazolyl)pyrocatechol (BBPC) derivatives with symmetric structures and their intramolecular hydrogen bonds. We systematically explored the regulation mechanism of solvent polarity and the electronegativity of chalcogen elements on the excited-state double proton transfer (ESDPT) behavior of BBPC derivatives (BBPC-O, BBPC-S, and BBPC-Se). By selecting hexane, chloroform, and acetonitrile as surrounding solvents, it was found that polar solvents can significantly enhance the intramolecular O1-H2···N3 and O4-H5···N6 double hydrogen bond interactions o

Myofunctional Therapy and Its Effects on Retropalatal Narrowing and Snoring: A Preliminary Analysis of Rehabilitative Approaches.

Introduction: Snoring is a common and disturbing condition that is associated with sleep apnea in some cases. Retropalatal narrowing has been reported to be often associated with the condition, as it can lead to increased air turbulence and vibration of tissues in the throat during breathing. The activation of the tongue, soft palate, lateral wall of the pharynx, and face has been shown to keep the upper muscles open during sleep, potentially improving snoring. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effects of myofunctional therapy (MT) in patients with collapsed pharynx. Methods: A total
