Inpatient aggression in community hospitals.

Physical violence is a frequent occurrence in acute community psychiatry units worldwide. Violent acts by patients cause many direct injuries and significantly degrade quality of care. The most accurate tools for predicting near-term violence on acute units rely on current clinical features rather than demographic risk factors. The efficacy of risk assessment strategies to lower incidence of violence on acute units is unknown. A range of behavioral and psychopharmacologic treatments have been shown to reduce violence among psychiatric inpatients.

An assessment of violent imagery in advertisements on city buses in Manhattan, New York City.

Background: Violence or violent imagery, defined as any image that conveys an imminent physical or existential threat to person(s), property, or society, with or without weaponry, is often featured in advertising. However, the effects of exposure (sporadic or chronic) to such imagery are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence and types of violence portrayed in advertising on public buses in New York City (NYC). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, from April to July 2019, researchers catalogued and coded the print advertising images present on the p

Empowerment or Threat: Perceptions of Childhood Sexual Abuse in the #MeToo Era.

The rise of the #MeToo movement has shed light on the prominence of sexual violence, and its victims who often remain silent. Despite increasing awareness, victims or survivors of sexual violence who disclose may be faced with negative reactions such as disbelief or blame. Such reactions extend to child victims of sexual abuse. This study aimed to shed light on gender differences in responses to sexual violence against a backdrop of #MeToo. Through an online survey (N = 253) on Amazon's Mechanical Turk, we assessed participants' exposure to and perception of the #MeToo movement. In addition, w

Integrating injury and violence prevention content into a tribal college public health curricula: a collaboration with Diné College, Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme and Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy.

Injuries disproportionately affect American Indian communities, yet few efforts focus on training students or building workforce capacity in injury and violence prevention (IVP) within these communities. To address this gap, a collaborative planning team from Diné College, Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme met biweekly during the 2023-2025 academic years to integrate IVP into undergraduate public health training. The collaboration incorporated IVP competencies into public health courses and supported student practicum expe

BLAME-LESS STUDY: a two-arm randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of an online psychoeducation programme for adolescents who have experienced physical/sexual violence or sexual abuse. Rationale, study design, and methods.

Background: Victims of physical/sexual violence or sexual abuse commonly experience defense responses that result in feelings of guilt and shame. Although trauma-focused interventions are effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, the presence of trauma-related shame and guilt can potentially hinder the process of disclosure during treatment, thus diminishing their overall effectiveness. It is hypothesized that providing psychoeducation about common defense responses will reduce feelings of shame and guilt, thereby increasing receptivity to trauma-focused treatment.Objectiv

Experience of physical violence during pregnancy and its association with behavioral outcomes during the prenatal and postnatal period: a pooled analysis of cross-sectional data from 45 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have established a link between physical intimate partner violence (IPV) and adverse health outcomes for mothers and children, there is a lack of thorough comparative analysis in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) that examines how physical IPV experienced during pregnancy specifically differs from physical IPV at other times. This comparison is crucial to understanding the extensive impact of physical IPV during pregnancy on antenatal care, early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF), exclusive breastfeeding for the first two days after birth (EB

The therapy alliance: a moderator in therapy outcome for families dealing with child abuse and neglect.

The role of the therapy alliance in therapy outcome for families dealing with child abuse and neglect was examined using the family as the unit of analysis. The alliance was tested as a moderator in relationship to posttreatment levels of symptom distress and physical violence. Results show that the bonds, goals, and tasks subscale scores are significantly related to posttreatment levels of symptom distress and that the goals subscale score is significantly related to posttreatment level of violence. There is an interaction between bonds and level of violence at intake, suggesting that the gre

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Distress Among Adolescents and Youth in Zimbabwe.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a global public health crisis associated with physical and poor mental health outcomes. The current study examined the prevalence and association between individual and cumulative ACEs with mental distress among adolescents and youth in Zimbabwe. Data from the 2017 Violence Against Children and Youth Survey were utilized (13-25 years old, n = 8,715). Bivariate analysis was conducted using chi-square tests to obtain the prevalence estimates. Two sets of logistic regression models were conducted to determine significant associations between independent va

The Association of Partner Abuse Types and Suicidal Ideation Among Men and Women College Students.

Despite the well-documented relations between intimate partner violence and suicidal ideation, gender differences regarding the relationships between intimate partner violence types and suicidal ideation are less understood. In addition, few studies have examined the risk that harassment may confer for suicidal ideation in the context of intimate partner violence. This study examined gender differences in the associations of harassment, emotional, and physical intimate partner violence with suicidal ideation in 502 college students, while controlling for the influence of depressive symptoms. Benzodiazepines - Their role in aggression and why GPs should prescribe with caution.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed in Australia, despite concerns about their potential for abuse and dependence. Paradoxical reactions, disinhibition and amnesia are all associated with benzodiazepine use, misuse and intoxication. While violent and aggressive behaviour may be a consequence of such disinhibition, there is limited information available regarding the links between benzodiazepine use and violence. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to examine the existing evidence on the relationship between benzodiazepines, violence and aggression. DISCUSSION: While current evidence s

Physical and emotional abuse in romantic relationships: motivation for perpetration among college women.

Intimate partner violence is extremely common in college samples. To inform prevention and intervention efforts, understanding the motivation for engaging in partner aggression is critically important. The predominant view in the domestic violence field has been that women's use of intimate partner violence occurs in the context of self-defense. However, there has been a dearth of solid evidence to support this claim. The present study explored the motivations for the perpetration of minor and severe physical aggression and for three types of emotional abuse (restrictive engulfment, denigratio

Growing up under the gun: Children and adolescents coping with violent neighborhoods.

Inner-city children are exposed to an environment fraught with violence. They are frequent victims of violence and even more frequent witnesses of violence. Exposure to violence can provoke a variety of responses in exposed children such as crying, tremors, withdrawal, etc. In addition to causing such acute stress reactions, exposure to violence can result in more lasting symptoms-including sleep disturbances, nightmares, anxiety, depression, and recurrent intrusive memories of the traumatic event. In many of these children such symptoms occur in combination and persist for long enough to just
