Direction-specific fMRI adaptation reveals the visual cortical network underlying the "Rotating Snakes" illusion.

The "Rotating Snakes" figure elicits a clear sense of anomalous motion in stationary repetitive patterns. We used an event-related fMRI adaptation paradigm to investigate cortical mechanisms underlying the illusory motion. Following an adapting stimulus (S1) and a blank period, a probe stimulus (S2) that elicited illusory motion either in the same or in the opposite direction was presented. Attention was controlled by a fixation task, and control experiments precluded explanations in terms of artefacts of local adaptation, afterimages, or involuntary eye movements. Recorded BOLD responses were

ERP evidence for rapid hedonic evaluation of logos.

We know that human neurocognitive systems rapidly and implicitly evaluate emotionally charged stimuli. But what about more everyday, frequently encountered kinds of objects, such as computer desktop icons and business logos? Do we rapidly and implicitly evaluate these more prosaic visual images, attitude objects that might only engender a mild sense of liking or disliking, if at all? To address this question, we asked participants to view a set of unfamiliar commercial logos in the context of a target identification task as brain electrical responses to these objects were recorded via event-re

The phenotype of early-onset retinal degeneration in persons with RDH12 mutations.

PURPOSE: To describe the retinal dystrophy phenotype associated with mutations in RDH12, the gene encoding a retinoid dehydrogenase/reductase expressed in the photoreceptor cells. METHODS: Sixteen persons from 12 families with pathogenic RDH12 mutations on both alleles were studied. Retinal phenotypes were characterized by ophthalmic examination, including psychophysical and standardized electrophysiological methods and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG). RESULTS: The retinal disease in persons with RDH12 mutations in the homozygous (p.G127X, p.Q189X, p.Y226C, p.A269GfsX1, and p.L274P) o

Visual and visuocognitive development in children born very prematurely.

Preterm birth is a risk factor for deficits of neurological and cognitive development. Four cohort studies are reported investigating the effects of very premature birth (<32 weeks gestation) on visual, visuocognitive and visuomotor function between birth and 6-7 years of age. The first study used two measures of early visual cortical function, orientation reversal visual event-related potentials (OR-VERP) and fixation shifts under competition. Both these functional measures of visual development correlated with the severity of brain abnormality observed on structural MRI at and before term, a

Visual recognition and visually guided action after early bilateral lesion of occipital cortex: a behavioral study of a 4.6-year-old girl.

We report the case of a 4.6-year-old girl born pre-term with early bilateral occipital damage. It was revealed that the child had non-severely impaired basic visual abilities and ocular motility, a selective perceptual deficit of figure-ground segregation, impaired visual recognition and abnormal navigating through space. Even if the child's visual functioning was not optimal, this was the expression of adaptive anatomic and functional brain modifications that occurred following the early lesion. Anatomic brain structure was studied with anatomic MRI and Diffusor Tensor Imaging (DTI)-MRI. This

Occipital activation in glyceryl trinitrate induced migraine with visual aura.

A case of migraine is presented with visual aura triggered on two separate occasions by glyceryl trinitrate (GTN). Positron emission tomography was carried out during the second triggering session. Activation in the primary visual area of the occipital cortex was demonstrated during the aura. This is the first published case of migraine aura triggered reproducibly by GTN.

fMR-adaptation reveals a distributed representation of inanimate objects and places in human visual cortex.

The way information about objects is represented in visual cortex remains controversial. It is unclear, for example, whether information is processed in modules, specialized for different categories of objects or whether information is represented in a distributed fashion across a large network of overlapping visual areas. In this study, we used fMR-adaptation to investigate the extent to which 'specialized' regions of visual cortex are involved in representing information about inanimate objects and places. We found adaptation in the object-selective lateral occipital complex (LOC) following

Rapid, painless unilateral vision loss in a 37-year-old healthy woman.

A 37-year-old woman experienced painless, progressive vision loss to no light perception in the left eye over the course of 3 days. The right eye was unaffected. On examination, the only other abnormal finding was a +4 left afferent pupillary defect. She was initially diagnosed with retrobulbar optic neuritis and admitted for treatment with intravenous methylprednisolone. Neuro-imaging revealed a large right anterior cerebral artery aneurysm that crossed the midline to compress the left optic nerve. The aneurysm was treated with coil embolization, which was technically successful but which did

From orthography to phonetics: ERP measures of grapheme-to-phoneme conversion mechanisms in reading.

Neuroimaging has provided evidence that the first stages of visual word recognition activate a visual word-form center localized in the left extrastriate cortex (fusiform gyrus). Accordingly, neurological cases of patients suffering from pure alexia reported the left posterior occipital lobe as the possible locus of orthographic analysis. There is less agreement in the literature about which brain structures are involved in the subsequent stages of word processing and, in particular, their time course of activation. Functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic source imaging studies rece

Interhemispheric visual interaction in a patient with posterior callosectomy.

The role of anterior commissure (AC) and anterior parts of corpus callosum in visual interactions was investigated in a partial split-brain patient whose posterior and middle parts of the corpus callosum were resected surgically leaving intact only a thin portion of anterior corpus callosum. Although the primary visual areas of the two hemispheres are disconnected in the patient, we found that visual distracters presented to one hemisphere (in a crowding paradigm) impaired recognition of the target stimulus presented to the other hemisphere. The normal control group showed the same result. To

Auditory triggered mental imagery of shape involves visual association areas in early blind humans.

Previous neuroimaging studies identified a large network of cortical areas involved in visual imagery in the human brain, which includes occipitotemporal and visual associative areas. Here we test whether the same processes can be elicited by tactile and auditory experiences in subjects who became blind early in life. Using positron emission tomography, regional cerebral blood flow was assessed in six right-handed early blind and six age-matched control volunteers during three conditions: resting state, passive listening to noise sounds, and mental imagery task (imagery of object shape) trigge

On the processing of spatial frequencies as revealed by evoked-potential source modeling.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Visually evoked potentials (VEPs) are known to be sensitive to spatial frequency, especially in the time range between 50 and 100 ms post-stimulus. In two experiments we localized the cortical activity elicited by stimuli of varying spatial frequency in scalp-recorded brain potentials, using multi-electrode recordings and dipole-source analysis. RESULTS: Low spatial frequencies (<1 c/d) activated relatively lateral occipital areas, the orientation of the neural ensembles involved being predominantly perpendicular to the scalp surface. In contrast, high spatial frequenc

Development of multisensory neurons and multisensory integration in cat superior colliculus.

The development of multisensory neurons and multisensory integration was examined in the deep layers of the superior colliculus of kittens ranging in age from 3 to 135 d postnatal (dpn). Despite the high proportion of multisensory neurons in adult animals, no such neurons were found during the first 10 d of postnatal life. Rather, all sensory-responsive neurons were unimodal. The first multisensory neurons (somatosensory-auditory) were found at 12 dpn, and visually responsive multisensory neurons were not found until 20 dpn. Early multisensory neurons responded weakly to sensory stimuli, had l

Utility of the color pattern-electroretinogram (PERG) in glaucoma.

Pattern-onset electroretinograms (PERGs) with red-green color contrast (CC) and green-"black" luminance contrast (LC) stripe patterns (0.3 c/deg) were recorded in a group of 80 control subjects and in a group of 42 patients having glaucomas of varying etiology and severity. The PERG data were correlated with the results of static perimetry and optic disc morphometry. In the glaucoma group the PERG was reduced significantly and by relatively similar amounts with both CC and LC stimuli. A significant correlation of the PERG reduction with visual field loss was found only with the CC, not with th

Carboplatin-induced regression of an optic pathway tumor in a child with neurofibromatosis.

Optic pathway tumors are common in children with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1). The optimal management of these tumors is unknown, particularly when the optic chiasm and other brain structures are involved. We report the dramatic response to carboplatin in a 10-year-old girl with NF-1 and a progressive optic pathway tumor. Tumor shrinkage was accompanied by striking improvement in visual fields, return of color discrimination, and marked improvement in visual acuity. No significant toxicity was observed. One year following completion of chemotherapy the glioma remains as small or smaller than it

Longitudinal Visual Outcomes and Risk of Papilledema Recurrence in Fulminant Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Fulminant idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a rare presentation of IIH characterized by rapid visual loss. Little is known regarding the cause of fulminant IIH and how to treat this condition. We conducted an analytical study aimed at characterizing disease, treatment, and visual outcomes while evaluating the time and frequency of recurrence of papilledema. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used records at a single tertiary institution screened between June 1, 2012, and September 31, 2023, for having an international classification of diseases (ICD) code of IIH
