Association between Body Composition Contents and Hepatic Fibrosis in Sarcopenic Obesity.

It is well established that sarcopenic obesity (SO) is linked to many diseases such as metabolic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, but there is little known about the relationship between SO and hepatic fibrosis progression in chronic liver disease. This study compared body composition contents in patients with non-obesity (NOb) and SO using abdominal magnetic resonance imaging and investigated the relationship between hepatic fibrosis and SO factors. This retrospective study enrolled 60 patients (28 NOb; 32 SO) from June 2014 to December 2020. Patients underwent histopathologic investig

Cytomegalovirus Infection in an Adult Patient With Neuromyelitis Optica and Acute Hemorrhagic Rectal Ulcer: Case Report and Literature Review.

Background: Previous infectious or inflammatory events may be involved in the pathogenesis of neuromyelitis optica (NMO), potentially by triggering an autoimmune response. Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-related NMO (CMV-NMO) is rarely reported. Acute hemorrhagic rectal ulcer (AHRU) is a rare disease with a largely unknown pathogenesis. Herein, we reported a co-NMO and AHRU case associated with CMV infection. In addition, we review previously reported cases of CMV-NMO and CMV-AHRU. Case presentation: A 40-year-old female diagnosed with aquaporin4 (AQP4)-IgG+ NMO and a poor response to high-dose intraven

Physical and cultural determinants of postpartum pelvic floor support and symptoms following vaginal delivery: a protocol for a mixed-methods prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs), including pelvic organ prolapse (POP), stress and urgency urinary incontinence, and faecal incontinence, are common and arise from loss of pelvic support. Although severe disease often does not occur until women become older, pregnancy and childbirth are major risk factors for PFDs, especially POP. We understand little about modifiable factors that impact pelvic floor function recovery after vaginal birth. This National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Program Project, 'Bridging physical and cultural determinants of postpartum pelvic floor support

Firing properties of the soma and axon of the abdominal stretch receptor neurons in the crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus).

Action potentials (APs) and impulse responses in the soma and axon of the rapidly and slowly adapting (SA) abdominal stretch receptor neurons of the crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) were recorded with single microelectrode current-clamp technique. Impulse frequency response to constant current injection was almost constant in the SA neuron while the response decayed completely in the rapidly adapting (RA) neuron. Mean impulse frequency responses to current stimulations were similar in the receptor neuron pairs. In the RA neuron additional current steps evoked additional impulses while a sudden

Exposure-disease continuum for 2-chloro-2'-deoxyadenosine (2-CdA), a prototype teratogen: induction of lumbar hernia in the rat and species comparison for the teratogenic responses.

BACKGROUND: The purine analog 2-chloro-2'-deoxyadenosine (2-CdA) caused ocular and limb defects in the mouse and rabbit. The current study examined the teratogenic potential of this drug in the rat and compared the adverse developmental outcomes with the other species. METHODS: Timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were given a single intraperitoneal injection of various doses of 2-CdA ranging from 5-60 mg/kg, at gestational day (GD) 9.5 and GD 14. 2-CdA concentrations in maternal serum and embryos were measured by HPLC and termed fetuses were prepared for teratological examination. [The striated sphincter of the urethra. 3: Urodynamic and physiopathologic study of the striated sphincter].

Dysfunction of the rhabdosphincter results from an increase (dyssynergia) or decrease in activity of either neurological or non-neurological origin. We have defined dyssynergia as the absence of urethral relaxation and/or sphincter contraction during and/or before detrusor muscle contraction. Non-invasive exploratory methods include flowmetry, anal contact EMG and an abdominal pressure or EMG examination. Invasive techniques are of various types: urethro-cystometry with EMG, via the perineum in males and the endo-urethral approach in females, provides quantitative data on extent of altered fun

Integrative genetic analyses for drug repurposing identify emodin as a candidate modulator of STAT3 signaling in abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening vascular disease lacking effective pharmacological therapies. To identify potential therapeutic targets and candidate compounds, we performed integrative genetic analyses for drug repurposing by combining Mendelian randomization (MR), summary-data-based Mendelian randomization (SMR), and Bayesian colocalization. This framework prioritized multiple druggable candidates, among which STAT3 emerged as a key regulatory node. Subsequent functional studies demonstrated that emodin suppressed vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, migration, ph

[LIU Yue's clinical experience in treating peripheral facial paralysis with stage-based pattern differentiation acupuncture].

This article systematically summarizes Professor LIU Yue's clinical experience in treating peripheral facial paralysis using a stage-based pattern differentiation acupuncture approach. Professor LIU proposed a refined diagnostic and therapeutic model of "taking staging as the guiding principle and pathogenesis as the key point", which integrates traditional stage-based pattern differentiation with modern neuropathological mechanisms to achieve precise staging and pathogenesis differentiation. The treatment strategy includes stage-specific acupuncture techniques, including the contralateral nee

Visceral Adiposity, Rather than Reduced Appendicular Lean Mass, Characterizes Elderly Hip Fracture Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional DXA Analysis.

Background/Objectives: While sarcopenia has been implicated, we hypothesize that a distinct body composition phenotype, characterized by elevated visceral adiposity and reduced abdominal muscle mass, plays a more critical role in T2DM-related fracture pathogenesis. Methods: In a cross-sectional study of 99 female patients aged ≥65 years who underwent surgery for hip fracture, we compared body composition parameters derived from DXA scans between those with (n = 40) and without (n = 59) T2DM. Key measures included appendicular lean mass index (ALMI), visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass, android-

Observational anatomic study of ascending lumbar veins in human cadavers.

BACKGROUND: The ascending lumbar veins (ALVs) and their continuations in the thorax as veins of the azygos and hemiazygos system constitute one of the main routes of collateral circulation in the caval system. However, there is some doubt about their efficiency, primarily with regard to the direction of flow and the presence or absence of valves in their lumina. OBJECTIVES: To conduct an anatomic study of the ALVs, noting the frequency, number, and types of valves present and the morphometry, tributaries, surrounding structures, drainage, and continuation of the ALVs. METHODS: This is a desc

Modified preperitoneal endoscopic pauli (Pe-Pauli) approach for concomitant repair of parastomal and midline hernias.

Parastomal hernia repair remains a complex surgical challenge due to high recurrence rates and significant technical demands. The modified Sugarbaker technique, particularly Pauli's retromuscular adaptation, has demonstrated promising outcomes. Concurrently, the PeTEP approach enables extensive preperitoneal dissection while preserving the integrity of the abdominal wall. We present the first reported case of atotally endoscopic preperitoneal repair combining both techniques (Pe-Pauli) for the simultaneous treatment of parastomal and midline hernias. Cough-Induced Groin Pain: Misleading Symptom or Diagnostic Key for Differential Diagnosis.

Groin pain that worsens with coughing is most commonly attributed to intra-abdominal pressure changes associated with inguinal or femoral hernias. However, musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders can mimic hernia-related symptoms and are often overlooked, leading to misdiagnosis, unnecessary imaging, and delayed treatment. Recognition of these alternative causes is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. We report the case of a 42-year-old male office worker with chronic right-sided groin pain persisting for 6 months. The pain was localized without radiation, aggravated by palpati

Immunomodulatory piezoelectric master electrospun membranes for pelvic floor repair.

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) in women is characterized primarily by the functional degeneration of pelvic support structures, with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) being a common clinical manifestation. Current materials for repairing POP are limited by suboptimal mechanical performance and inadequate anti-inflammatory and antibacterial capabilities. Herein, a immunomodulatory piezoelectric master electrospun membrane is innovatively designed to provide integrated mechanical support, piezoelectric responsiveness, and immune microenvironment regulation. Electrospun membranes with uniformly loaded

Histiocytic myocarditis: A rare and complex cause of cardiogenic shock.

INTRODUCTION: Histiocytic Myocardial Inflammatory Disease (HMID) is a rare and under-recognized form of myocarditis, characterized by predominant histiocytic infiltration within the myocardial tissue. Unlike more common lymphocytic and eosinophilic forms, HMID remains diagnostically challenging, particularly in children. Here we present a pediatric case, outlining the clinical course and the difficulties encountered, and highlighting the histopathological and immunohistochemical features essential for establishing the diagnosis. Laparoscopic Resection of a Giant Completely Isolated Intestinal Duplication Cyst in a Child.

INTRODUCTION: Completely isolated intestinal duplication cysts are rare congenital lesions that lack continuity with the gastrointestinal tract and have an independent vascular pedicle. Their presentation beyond infancy and distinction from mesenteric or omental cysts can be challenging, particularly when only noncontrast imaging is available. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the laparoscopic resection of a giant isolated intestinal duplication cyst in a 10-year-old boy who presented with abdominal distension and pain. Robotically-Assisted Resection of Leiomyomatosis in the Inferior Vena Cava With Right Atrial and Ventricular Extension.

Intravascular leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare benign smooth muscle tumor that can extend from the uterine or pelvic veins into the inferior vena cava (IVC) and, in exceptional cases, the right cardiac chambers. Despite its benign histology, it may present with life-threatening cardiovascular complications and often mimics thromboembolic disease, delaying diagnosis. We report on a 47-year-old woman with a history of uterine fibroids who presented with recurrent syncope. Imaging revealed an intraluminal IVC mass extending through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, initially presumed to

Dual effect of Vascular Calcification in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Progression: A Narrative Review from Multi-Scales.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a degenerative vascular disease with a high mortality rate of rupture, yet effective pharmacological interventions to delay its progression or prevent rupture remain unavailable. Vascular calcification (VC), a prominent pathological feature of AAA, exhibits a paradoxical role. Clinical and biomechanical studies confirm that VC exerts a dual effect: it accelerates AAA progression by inducing local stress concentration, while simultaneously providing mechanical stability through global load-sharing effect. This functional paradox may stem from a dynamic imbalan

Effect of ASP5633, a novel peripherally restricted MT1/MT2 receptor agonist, on urethral function in female rats.

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates numerous physiological processes through activation of specific G protein-coupled receptors, termed MT1 and MT2 receptors. We previously reported that stimulation of MT1 receptors in female rat urethra activated intracellular Ca2+ mobilization via a Gq protein-dependent pathway, resulting in urethral smooth muscle contraction. This study aimed to investigate the potential of MT1 receptor-related urethral contraction in the treatment of urological disorders using ASP5633 (3-(2-acetamidoethyl)-6-fluoro-5-methoxy-N-methyl-1H-indole-2-carboxamide), a novel per
