Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration for systematic nodal staging of lung cancer in patients with N0 disease by computed tomography and integrated positron emission tomography-computed tomography.

RATIONALE: Data regarding the sensitivity of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) for staging of lung cancer in patients with radiographic N0 disease is scant and inconsistent. With increasing use of nonoperative ablative therapies, studies focusing on the performance characteristics of EBUS-TBNA in this population are important. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) of EBUS-TBNA in patients with non-small cell lung cancer and radiographic N0 disease both by computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography

Indoor environmental quality in school buildings, and the health and wellbeing of students.

Poor indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in classrooms may be a risk for health symptoms and cause absence from school. We conducted a comprehensive study in order to assess the connection between IEQ in Finnish elementary school buildings and the health and academic performance of sixth grade students. The specific aim of the present paper was to study the school- or grade-level prevalence of symptoms in relation to IEQ. The school- or grade-level (i.e. group level) prevalence of self-reported symptoms and perceived IEQ was studied using data collected by a health questionnaire comprising 37 q

Meditation therapies for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common developmental disorders experienced in childhood and can persist into adulthood. The disorder has early onset and is characterized by a combination of overactive, poorly modulated behavior with marked inattention. In the long term it can impair academic performance, vocational success and social-emotional development. Meditation is increasingly used for psychological conditions and could be used as a tool for attentional training in the ADHD population. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of meditation t

Effect of very low birth weight and subnormal head size on cognitive abilities at school age.

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that very-low-birth-weight (less than 1.5 kg) infants with perinatal growth failure whose head size is not normal by eight months of age (corrected for prematurity) have significantly poorer growth and neurocognitive abilities at school age than very-low-birth-weight children with a normal head size at eight months. We also hypothesized that these differences would persist even after control for major neurologic impairment and perinatal and sociodemographic risk factors. METHODS: We have followed a cohort of very-low-birth-weight children since their birth

Proceedings of the Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Medical Society of Paraplegia held at Stoke Mandeville from 28-30 July 1977 (Part II). Fracture dislocation of the cervical spine: a critique of current management in the United States.

The author has been asked to review the hospital records and X-rays of 12 patients from various regions of the United States who have sustained fracture dislocations of the cervical spine. In no instance was the initial care considered to be appropriate. No patient was significantly improved by treatment although only 17% had apparent complete transverse cord syndromes on admission. Sixty-seven per cent of the patients became worse. In the latter group there were three patients who were admitted with either no neurological deficit or only minimal pyramidal signs. All of these three patients be

Visual extraction of individual patient data from published kaplan-meier survival plots using a web-based application offering different reconstruction methods (V-Exploder).

BACKGROUND: Individual patient-level survival data (IPD) is required for various types of medical research, such as meta-analyses and cost-effectiveness analyses. As IPD from clinical trials are usually not publicly available, secondary data utilization relies on IPD reconstruction from published Kaplan-Meier (KM) plots. In general, the established toolchains for IPD reconstruction are cumbersome and rarely offer possibilities to assess reconstruction accuracy. IMPLEMENTATION: We have therefore developed V-Exploder, an academic, non-profit, data-local tool that integrates the complete workflo

Curriculum Innovation: Virtual Reality for Neuroanatomy Education Among Neurology Residents.

INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM STATEMENT: Advanced neuroanatomy knowledge is essential for clinical reasoning in neurology, yet residency training offers limited time to reinforce concepts. This contributes to persistent gaps in topics frequently tested on the Residency In-service Training Examination (RITE). This study evaluated the feasibility and educational impact of a virtual reality (VR) neuroanatomy curriculum intended to enable residents to (1) identify and spatially integrate arterial, venous, and ventricular structures; (2) improve performance on assessments targeting commonly missed RITE

Prevalence and Lifestyle Correlates of Premenstrual Syndrome and Its Severity Among Female University Students in Yemen: A Cross-Sectional Study of Dietary Habits and Qat Use.

Background Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a significant public health challenge that adversely affects the quality of life and academic performance of young women. While lifestyle factors are implicated in its etiology, evidence from populations experiencing protracted conflict and resource limitations is critically lacking. This study investigates the exploratory prevalence, symptom patterns, and modifiable lifestyle correlates of PMS severity among female university students in Yemen. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, 175 female students aged 15 to 25 from a university in

Psychometric properties and symptom profiles of the PHQ-9 and DASS-21 among medical and non-medical university students: a cross-sectional study in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading cause of disability among university students. While medical students are often assumed to be at highest risk, cross-disciplinary comparisons in South Asia remain scarce. This study examined depressive symptom differences between medical and non-medical students in Pakistan and evaluated the concurrent psychometric performance of the PHQ-9 and DASS-21. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 602 undergraduate students (424 medical, 178 non-medical) was conducted at universities in Lahore, Pakistan. Measures included the PHQ-9 and DASS-21. Tackling Acquisition of Language in Kids born Preterm (TALK-Preterm): protocol of a prospective cohort study.

Background Children born extremely preterm (EPT) are at significant risk for delays in language development. Language is important for the developing child not only because of its relationship with cognition and academic performance but also because of its impact on quality of life and relationships with peers and caregivers. Late talking, which can be reflective of expressive language difficulties, is particularly common in children born extremely preterm. Preterm infants born at NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN) centers have historically been enrolled in the NRN Generic Database (GDB) an

SBRT plus abiraterone acetate and ADT versus abiraterone acetate and ADT in oligometastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (ARTO): long-term, unplanned overall survival analysis of an open-label, randomised, phase 2 trial.

BACKGROUND: The ARTO trial showed improved early clinical outcomes by adding metastasis-directed therapy (MDT), through stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), to abiraterone acetate and ADT in oligometastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer. The aim of this analysis is to explore the long-term impact of MDT on overall survival. METHODS: ARTO was a multicentre, phase 2, randomised trial conducted in 16 academic and community centres across Italy. All patients included were aged 18 years or older and had a diagnosis of prostate adenocarcinoma with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cance

Integration of GFAP/UCH-L1 Testing into an Emergency Department Concussion Pathway and Calculator to Model TBI Biomarker Impact on Time.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) accounts for 70-90% of all TBI cases and represents a significant burden on emergency departments (EDs) across the United States. Despite its prevalence, mTBI evaluation remains heavily dependent on head computed tomography (CT), contributing to imaging overuse, increased health care costs, and unnecessary radiation exposure. The Food and Drug Administration-cleared i-STAT® TBI Plasma cartridge offers a promising alternative by identifying patients who may not require CT imaging. However, the real-world diagnostic performance and impact on imaging utilization
