Serotonin transporter expression is predicted by early life stress and is associated with disinhibited behavior in infant rhesus macaques.

Serotonin transporter (5-HTT) expression patterns may contribute to the risk for adverse psychological outcomes following early life stress. The present study investigated whether two types of early life stress, maternal and social aggression, and a serotonin transporter gene promoter polymorphism (rh5-HTTLPR) predicted lower post-stressor peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) 5-HTT expression in infant rhesus macaques. We further probed the relationships among these factors and infant behavioral disinhibition within a stressful situation. Fifty-three infants residing with mothers in large,

Predictors and moderators of problem-focused social skills training versus resource activation for children with disruptive behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Not all children benefit equally from evidence-based treatments for disruptive behavior disorders (DBD). In a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT), computer-facilitated social skills training (ScouT) demonstrated superior efficacy over solution-focused, resource-oriented treatment (STARK) in reducing parent-rated peer-related aggression in children with DBD. This study explores predictors and moderators of these treatments to determine which subgroups respond differently. METHODS: The sample included N = 100 children aged 6-12 years with DBD and peer-related aggression. Usin

The development of antisocial behavior: what can we learn from functional neuroimaging studies?

The recent development of low-risk imaging technologies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have had a significant impact on the investigation of psychopathologies in children and adolescents. This review considers what we can infer from fMRI work regarding the development of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). We make two central assumptions that are grounded in the empirical literature. First, the diagnoses of CD and ODD identify individuals with heterogeneous pathologies; that is, different developmental pathologies can receive a CDD or ODD diag

The association of irritability and impulsivity with suicidal ideation among 15- to 20-year-old males.

Information on the association of impulsivity and measures of aggression with suicidal ideation in adolescents and young adults is limited. Data were gathered from a community sample of 625 adolescent and young adult males. Analyses were based on multivariate generalized estimating equations. Impulsivity and irritability were associated strongly with suicidal ideation after accounting for alcohol dependence and other aggression-related constructs including psychopathy. Given that irritable, impulsive adolescent males appear to contemplate suicidal behavior, their heightened suicide risk may be

Neuromodulation for treatment resistant autism: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social-communication impairment, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, and, in a subset of individuals, severe aggression, self-injurious behavior (SIB), and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Traditional behavioral and pharmacological approaches often provide limited benefit. Neuromodulation and ablative neuropsychiatric procedures have emerged as potential therapeutic strategies targeting the neural circuits implicated in ASD. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the existing clinical literature o

Eco-Emotion Profiles Among Parents and Links to Violent and Neglectful Parenting: Parental Burnout as a Mediating Pathway.

Climate change is a psychosocial stressor with implications for parenting and child safety. Many parents experience eco-emotions that can tax caregiving resources and self-regulation, yet evidence is scarce on how eco-emotion profiles relate to parental burnout and violent and neglectful parenting. This study aimed to identify eco-emotion profiles and to test whether parental burnout explains associations with psychological aggression, physical assault, and neglect toward children. Participants were 1,203 cisgender heterosexual Italian parents (70.16% mothers; M = 45.60, SD = 9.37) who complet

Digitally delivered cognitive bias modification for interpretation targeting hostile interpretation bias in compulsory drug rehabilitation: A feasibility randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Hostile interpretation bias (HIB) is a cognitive correlate of aggression. Cognitive bias modification for interpretation (CBM-I) has shown mixed effects on HIB and aggressive behavior, but its feasibility among people who use drugs (PWUD) in compulsory rehabilitation settings remains unclear. This feasibility trial evaluated a digitally delivered CBM-I (dCBM-I) program for PWUD and explored whether changes in HIB were associated with aggression change. METHODS: In this assessor-blinded feasibility randomized controlled trial, 60 PWUD from a compulsory rehabilitation facility were

Disentangling violence in schizophrenia: Interactions between symptom trajectories, conduct disorder, and pharmacotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Violence in schizophrenia poses a major clinical and public health challenge. This study examined how core psychopathological features, conduct disorder (CD), and pharmacological treatment influence violent behavior by looking at the interaction among these variables. We also investigated the clinical differences between CD and non-CD patients. METHODS: 99 individuals with schizophrenia and with assaultive behaviors were randomly assigned in a double-blind design to clozapine, olanzapine, or haloperidol. Participants were further classified by presence or absence of CD. Clinical e

[Oral Ingestion of Umami during the Developmental Period Is Involved in Emotion Formation via the Vagus Nerve in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Model Rats].

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), an umami substance, activates the gut-brain axis via vagus nerves. However, the brain mechanism involved in the effect of MSG on aggression during the developmental period has not been clarified. SHR/Izm, a known model of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was used to investigate the effect of MSG oral ingestion (60 mM solution) on aggression. The resident-intruder test was performed in rats, with a detailed analysis of aggressive behavior, including the frequency, duration, and latency of anogenital sniffing, aggressive grooming, and attack behavior.

The company you keep: The neglected role of affiliating with delinquent friends in the development of the cannabis-violence link.

A growing body of research suggests a potential role of cannabis use on aggressive behaviors. In literature on adolescents, the lack of consideration of important confounders, such as adolescent's affiliation with delinquent peers, limits the possibility to determine whether there might be a direct or indirect link between cannabis use and aggression. Therefore, we sought to examine the effect of delinquent peers on the association between cannabis use and violence. We re-analyzed data from 850 ninth graders who were followed from mid-adolescence to early adulthood. Generalized Estimations Equ

Future preferences and prospection of future of outcomes: Independent yet specific associations with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct problems have been associated with heightened temporal discounting of reward value resulting in a preference for immediate over delayed outcomes. We examined the cross-sectional relationship between future preference (including intertemporal choice) and prospection (the ability to bring to mind and imagine the experience of future personally-relevant events and outcomes) in adolescents with a range of ADHD symptoms and aggressive behaviour. METHODS: A combination of behavioural tasks and self-reports measure

White matter microstructure in schizophrenia patients with a history of violence.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is associated with increased risk of violence compared to the general population. Neuroimaging research suggests SCZ to be a disorder of disrupted connectivity, with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) indicating white matter (WM) abnormalities. It has been hypothesized that SCZ patients with a history of violence (SCZ-V) have brain abnormalities distinguishing them from SCZ patients with no history of violence (SCZ-NV). Yet, a thorough investigation of the neurobiological underpinnings of state and trait measures of violence and aggression in SCZ derived from DTI indices is lac

Correlates of melanization in multiple high- and low-elevation populations of the lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis: Behavior, hormones, and parasites.

Hormones mediate the expression of suites of correlated traits and hence may act either to facilitate or constrain adaptive evolution. Selection on one trait within a hormone-mediated suite of traits may lead to a change in the strength of the hormone signal, causing changes in correlated traits. Growing evidence suggests that melanization, which is in part regulated by hormonal signals, is tightly linked to other traits, such as aggression and stress physiology. Here, we examine six populations of Sceloporus occidentalis lizards differing in degree of melanization (three dark higher-elevation

Family functioning, social impairment, and symptoms among adolescents with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired social functioning is common among youth with bipolar disorder (BD), emerges in multiple settings, and persists over time. However, little is known about factors associated with poor peer and family functioning in the early-onset form of BD. Using a sample of adolescents with BD I or II, we examined which symptoms of BD, including nonspecific symptoms such as inattention, aggression, and anxiety/depression, were associated with family functioning (adaptability, cohesion, and conflict) and peer relationship quality. METHOD: Adolescents (N = 115; 46% male) with BD I and II a

Oral risperidone with lorazepam versus oral zuclopenthixol with lorazepam in the treatment of acute psychosis in emergency psychiatry: a prospective, comparative, open-label study.

Acutely psychotic patients presenting as psychiatric emergencies with aggression or agitation are often administered conventional antipsychotics intramuscularly. However, patients view intramuscular administration as coercive, and conventional antipsychotics are often associated with adverse events. In this open study, consecutive adult patients presenting with an acute exacerbation of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder were assigned to oral risperidone 2-6 mg/day (n = 48) or oral zuclopenthixol 20-50 mg/day (n = 27) for 7-14 days.
