Fennel seed essential oil (FSEO) is a plant-derived natural therapeutic against dermatophytes. In this study, the antifungal effects of FSEO were investigated from varied aspects, such as MIC and minimum fungicidal concentration, mycelia growth, spore germination and biomass. The results indicated that FSEO had potent antifungal activities on Trichophyton rubrum ATCC 40051, Trichophyton tonsurans 10-0400, Microsporum gypseum 44693-1 and Trichophyton mentagrophytes 10-0060, which is better than the commonly used antifungal agents fluconazole and amphotericin B. Flow cytometry and transmission e

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the species distribution and to monitor the antifungal susceptibility profiles of clinical Candida isolates collected in China from 2009 to 2013.
METHODS: The antifungal susceptibilities of 952 Candida isolates were tested.
RESULTS: Candida albicans was the most common species, accounting for 65.7% of the total isolates. The most frequently isolated non-albicans Candida species in this study was Candida glabrata (193, 20.3%). Nearly 7.6%, 3.2%, 1.8%, and 1.1% of the 952 isolates exhibited decreased susceptibility to fluconazole, voricona

Members of the Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) are causing the majority of the fusariosis in humans. Disseminated fusariosis has a high mortality and is predominantly observed in patients with leukemia. Here, we present the case of a fatal infection by a Fusarium strain with a degenerated phenotype, in a patient with acute lymphatic leukemia. Multiple nasal and skin biopsies as well as blood cultures yielded fungal growth, while in direct and histopathological examination of biopsy material septate hyphae were visible. Initial colonies were white with slimy masses with microconidia remi

We report a case of a young woman with advanced HIV/AIDS who presented with a short duration of fever and shortness of breath, with no recent travel history or previous hospitalisation, accompanied by non-specific abdominal symptoms and suspicious upper gastrointestinal bleed. Her CD4 count was 1 cell/μL raising the suspicious for various opportunistic aetiologies. The initial suspicion was for pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and the patient was treated empirically with antimicrobials. Peripheral smear findings, urinary antigen tests and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were suggestive of disseminate

The incidences of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Cryptococcus neoformans in immunocompromised patients have increased, but there are few documented cases of their coexistence. We present the case of a 9-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), treated with prednisone and cyclophosphamide, who was admitted to the emergency department with a 2-week history of fever, headache, malaise, fatigue, and diplopia 3 years after diagnosis. Physical examination showed limitation of abduction of the right eye, Kernig and Brudzinski signs, and hyporeflexia. Magnetic resonance

We present the first clinical report of an infection caused by Candida galli, an anamorphic yeast species in the Yarrowia clade. C. galli has been described in the literature only four times, but never before it has been isolated from clinical samples. The colony morphology on Sabouraud medium and morphotype on CHROMagar Candida medium were similar to C. lipolytica as well as the carbon assimilation profile. The phenotypic differences with C. lipolytica were the non-assimilation of N-acetyl glucosamine, the absence of urease activity, growth in 10 % NaCl with 5 % glucose and in vitamin-free me

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis are the fungal infections caused by emerging ubiquitous filamentous fungi classified as zygometes and order as mucorales. They occur mainly in immunosuppressed patients and diabetics. The onset of hemoptysis, in this context, may rapidly become life-threatening.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a man of 83 years, Caribbean with a history of non-insulindependent diabetes and HTLV1 seropositive. At admission he presented with fever, cough and cachexia. Chest X-ray revealed a snapshot of excavation within alveolar consolidation. Endoscopy showed a mucopurulent plug o

Rhapontigenin, an aglycone of rhapontin, was produced by biotransformation and we investigated its antifungal activity against Candida albicans, one of the most important opportunistic fungal pathogens. Rhapontigenin is found to have, in vitro, inhibitory activity with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) value against all test isolates of 128-256 μg/ml. We detected increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in yeast cultures treated with rhapontigenin at the MIC. Rhapontigenin inhibited DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, especially RNA synthesis, and induced morphological changes and ap

The synthesis of β-carbolines and their in vitro antiplasmodial and antileishmanial activities were described herein. These molecules have also been studied concerning their in vitro cytotoxicity toward the human cell line THP1, in order to calculate their respective selectivity indexes (SI). Among the 20 tested molecules, four exhibited significant antiplasmodial activity on the W2 multi-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strain (0.7 < IC₅₀ < 1.7 μM), in comparison with two references drugs (chloroquine and doxycycline), and a low cytotoxicity. These β-carbolines were also evaluated concerning t

A 43 year-old diabetic woman, who suffered chronic cough and brown expectoration, is presented in this clinical problem. X-ray exam and CT thorax scan showed a cavitary lung lesion, located at the upper field of the left lung. This lesion had 5 cm in diameter, with a thick wall and a spherical shadow inside. The diagnosis of chronic cavitary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis was based on the isolation of Coccidioides sp. from cultures of expectoration and bronchoalveolar lavage, and the detection of specific antibodies in immunodiffusion test and counterimmunoelectrophoresis with coccidiodin. Invasive disseminated neonatal aspergillosis is an uncommon disease, with only scattered reports in literature in the last few years. Here we report on a 25-week gestational age, 730 g at birth preterm female infant who developed on day-of-life 10 multiple cutaneous exhulcerative lesions in her right arm, trunk and abdomen. Early recognition and diagnosis of these lesions as a due to cutaneous initial symptom of cutaneous disseminated aspergillosis, as well as prompt treatment with Liposomal amphotericin B + Itraconazole, secured successful recovery from the systemic infection. Zygomycosis is an emerging fungal infection that is associated with high mortality in hematological patients and stem cell transplantation (SCT) recipients. Radiology--computed tomography (CT) imaging in particular--facilitates the detection of lung involvement at an early stage of the infection. The reversed halo sign (RHS) has previously been reported in cryptogenetic organizing pneumonia and, more recently, as a manifestation of pulmonary zygomycosis. Here we describe a case of histologically proven zygomycosis due to Rhizopus microsporus in a SCT recipient. A chest CT scan performed on day

A healthy 27-year-old woman with a corneal ulcer underwent fibrin gluing with a bandage contact lens twice, due to an impending perforation. The ulcer lesion slowly progressed, unresponsive to topical antibiotics and amphotericin B. We removed the gluing patch and performed a corneal or scraping or biopsy with multiple amniotic membrane grafts to seal the thinned or perforated cornea. Three days after the surgery, the corneal cultures grew Fusarium, as well as Enterococcus faecalis. Three weeks after surgery, the outermost layer of amniotic membranes, serving as a temporary patch, was removed.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), though widely prevalent in India, is not seen in the Rajasthan where the dry, hot and arid climatic conditions create a hostile environment for the growth of the parasite or its vector, the sandfly. We present a case of VL in a patient co-infected with HIV from this region. A 34-year-old known case of a HIV-positive patient presented to the skin department of our hospital with multiple, nontender, erythematous, papulonodular lesions all over the body for 6 months with history of weight loss and low-grade fever. Important examination findings were pallor, inguinal l

Blastomyces dermatitidis is acquired in almost all cases via inhalation, and pulmonary disease is the most frequent clinical manifestation of blastomycosis. Pulmonary disease can range from asymptomatic infection to rapidly severe and fatal disease. Most cases will present as pneumonia, either acute or chronic, or as a lung mass. In rare cases pulmonary blastomycosis is associated with the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Blastomycosis can present as isolated pulmonary disease or along with coexisting extrapulmonary disease that usually will involve the skin, bony structures, genitourinary

Mucormycosis of the head and neck is the most common form of infection by the order Mucorales, accounting for up to half of all cases. About 70% of rhinocerebral cases develop in diabetic patients. Less often, rhinocerebral mucormycosis occurs in solid organ transplant recipients, those with prolonged neutropenia, and those on deferoxamine therapy. Recently, rhinocerebral disease has been increasingly recognized in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. A growing number of cases have presented as breakthrough infection in patients receiving voriconazole. The mortality rat

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: More than two years after unrelated stem cell transplantation with ongoing immunosuppressive therapy due to chronic graft-versus-host disease a patient was admitted with dyspnea. In the sequel, the patient developed ptosis.
DIAGNOSIS: CT scan of paranasal sinus demonstrated an orbita-infiltrating tumor identified as mucormycosis by microbiology and biopsy. Further diagnostics showed cerebral involvement. Due to additional pancytopenia a conservative approach to this rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis was chosen.
TREATMENT AND COURSE: With dose intensive liposo

A 64-year-old woman was referred to our clinic for the treatment of chronic uveitis in her left eye, which had started two weeks after an uncomplicated cataract extraction. She was treated with topical steroids with an initially good response, yet she subsequently developed severe inflammation and plaque-like material around the intraocular lens, despite continuous steroid therapy. She underwent pars plana vitrectomy, smear and culture of the aqueous and vitreous fluids, and intravitreal antibiotic injection under the impression of Propionibacterium acne (P. acne) endophthalmitis.
