Conventional passive prostheses for lower limb amputees lack active assistance and cannot replicate the natural energy dynamics of healthy limbs, resulting in compromised mobility and diminished quality of life. Powered lower-limb prostheses can theoretically replicate the biomechanical function of healthy limbs during ambulation. However, existing powered prostheses fall short of fully restoring mobility for individuals with above-knee amputations. This limitation is mainly due to existing controllers, which struggle to coordinate their assistance with the user's movements across a variety of

INTRODUCTION: Studies have demonstrated successful outcomes with early weightbearing following open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of specific ankle fractures. The external validity of an early weightbearing protocol and its effects on patient-reported outcome information scores (PROMIS) has yet to be investigated. This study aimed to investigate the effects of an early weightbearing protocol for all operatively treated ankle fractures and its impact on clinical outcomes and complications.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 229 patients (≥ 16 years) with OTA/AO 44 A-C fract

Management of ankle fractures necessitating surgery is impacted by soft tissue swelling, often delaying open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Subjective evaluations are inconsistent, and traditional measurement methods are often inaccurate or impractical. This prospective observational study included 17 adults with unilateral closed ankle fractures requiring surgical fixation. A measurement protocol on regions of interest (ROI) was utilized, employing a handheld 3D scanner for daily volume scans of the fractured ankle, comparing these measurements with subjective assessments of swelling

This study evaluates outcomes and long-term reinjury rates in patients with severe lateral ankle ligament injuries treated surgically versus nonoperatively. A combined surgical and arthroscopic approach was used for such cases. From 2004 to 2013, 103 patients with acute lateral ankle ligament injuries and a talar tilt angle (TTA) of ≥ 15° underwent surgical treatment. At 3 months postoperatively, TTA reassessment in 85 feet (82.5 %) showed a mean improvement from 23.9° to 5.8°. The mean AOFAS score reached 97.1 points at 3 months, reflecting excellent patient outcomes. In contrast, 132 patient

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are linked to neuromuscular and respiratory impairments, including reduced diaphragm contractility and altered landing mechanics. These deficits related to recurrent LAS may contribute to compromised ankle joint stability and increased risk of recurrent injury. However, no studies have explored the associations between diaphragm function and landing kinetics. This study aimed to examine the associations between diaphragm contractility, peak ground reaction force (GRF), and loading rate during a unilateral drop-landing task in individuals with

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pharyngeal pain is common in patients with thyroid cancer undergoing day-case surgery, with approximately 60%-90% affected. Wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) offers a potential alternative but lacks clinical validation in day surgery settings.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of WAA in reducing postoperative pharyngeal pain in patients with thyroid cancer undergoing day-case surgery.
METHODS: Seventy-two patients undergoing thyroidectomy were randomized into the WAA experimental group (n = 36) or the control group (n = 36). The WAA expe

BACKGROUND: The choice between locking and nonlocking plates for ankle fracture fixation is guided by implant cost, patient factors, fracture morphology, and clinical outcomes. Locking plates offer increased stability, particularly in osteopenic bone, and are available in low-profile, anatomically precontoured designs, though they are generally less malleable than nonlocking plates and are associated with higher cost. This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of these methods by PROMIS (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) scores and complication rates. The primary outco

OBJECTIVES: The ankle fracture with both deltoid ligament (DL) rupture and syndesmotic diastasis was treated by fixing syndesmosis after open reduction and plate fixation of the fibular fracture. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of deltoid ligament augmentation (DLA) replacing syndesmosis fixation for the treatment of such a fracture.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial recruited acute ankle fracture patients with syndesmotic instability and DL rupture. Patients were randomized into DLA and trans-syndesmotic screw fixation (TSSF) groups. The primary outcome measure was the

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is associated with impaired gait adaptability, and investigating time-dependent changes in step kinematics and variability—particularly step-to-step corrections—under visually-disruptive conditions compared to a control setting may offer valuable insights into the sensorimotor deficits underlying this condition. METHODS: This cross-over investigation included nineteen participants (Age: 22±3 years, 5±3 sprains, 7±9 giving-way episodes, 23±6 IdFAI score). Inclusion criteria followed International Ankle Consortium guidelines. Participants completed two

BACKGROUND: Ankle arthrodesis (AA), or ankle fusion, is a surgical procedure used to treat severe ankle pathologies, particularly in patients with chronic pain and reduced mobility due to conditions like osteoarthritis, posttraumatic arthritis, and Charcot arthropathy. Diabetic patients undergoing AA often face higher risks of complications due to comorbidities such as dyslipidemia and hypertension. This study aims to compare the outcomes of AA in diabetic vs nondiabetic patients, using data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) from 2016 to 2019.
METHODS: Using the Nationwide Inpatient
