OBJECTIVE: To describe the conservative management of a young athlete with extension-based (EB) low back pain (LBP).
BACKGROUND: We present the case of a 15-year-old female high school gymnast with a 4-year history of EB LBP. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a healed spondylolysis and significant atrophy with fatty infiltrate of the lumbar multifidi muscles (LMM). She had several courses of outpatient orthopaedic rehabilitation that focused on core muscle strengthening (improving activation and strength of the LMM and transversus abdominus muscle in a neutral pelvic position) without long-

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that chronic low back pain is associated with plastic changes in the brain that can be modified by neuromodulation strategies. This study investigated the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined simultaneously with peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) for pain relief, disability and global perception in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP).
METHODS: Ninety-two patients with CLBP were randomized to receive 12 sessions on nonconsecutive days of anodal tDCS (primary motor cortex, M1), 100 Hz sensory PES (lumbar spine), tDC

INTRODUCTION: Duloxetine has demonstrated efficacy in chronic low back pain (CLBP). We examined the predictors of response to duloxetine for CLBP.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of pooled data from 4 double-blind, ran-domized, placebo-controlled trials of duloxetine (60 mg/day for 12-14 weeks) in adult patients with CLBP. Primary outcome was proportion of patients with ≥30% reduction in Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) average pain ("pain reduction") at 12-14 weeks. The proportion of patients with ≥30% and ≥50% (secondary outcome) pain reduction in duloxetine and placebo groups

INTRODUCTION: Many people in Nigeria are living with disability due to chronic low back pain (CLBP), with the greatest burden accounted for by people living in rural Nigeria. However, factors associated with disability in rural Nigeria have not yet been established. We investigated the biomechanical and psychosocial predictors of CLBP disability in a rural Nigerian population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of adults with non-specific CLBP recruited from rural communities in Enugu State, South-eastern Nigeria. Measures of self-reported and performance-based disability, pain intensity, anxie

BACKGROUND: Although low back pain (LBP) is a debilitating problem internationally, there is not a lot of research on its impact on physical, psychosocial and lifestyle factors. Especially in mediterranean countries, such as Greece, it is not sufficiently explored whether physical (pain location, activity limitation etc.), sociodemographic (education, smoking etc.) or lifestyle factors (i.e. quality of life or anxiety) are influenced by LBP.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate LBP prevalence in the Greek general population and explore its association with particular sociodemographic, physical and lifestyl

Low back pain (LBP) affects 20 to 30% of the United States general population, making it the fifth most common reason for all physician visits in the U.S. The resultant financial burden on the U.S. health care industry continues to rise each year with recent estimates of over $80 billion spent annually. However, despite the dramatic rise in health care utilization and costs for this complaint, self-reported outcomes have not improved. The radiographic analysis of a healthy asymptomatic population vs. a cohort of LBP patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease, specifically as it relates to

Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used in the management of chronic lower back and leg pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the short- and long-term electromyographic and clinical outcome of patients with chronic radicular pain after ESIs. This prospective, open-label study, included patients with chronic radicular pain due to disc herniation or spinal stenosis, who underwent interlaminar, fluoroscopy-guided ESIs. Patients were assessed before ESIs, as well as after 6 and 12 months, clinically (VAS 0-10, BPI, DN4, Rolland Morris, DASS, STAI) and electromyographically fo

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Emergency department (ED) patients with acute low back pain (LBP) may present with ambiguous clinical findings that pose diagnostic challenges to exclude cauda equina syndrome (CES). As a proof of concept, we aimed to determine the efficacy of a rapid lumbar spine (LS) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) screening protocol consisting of a single 3D-T2 SPACE FS (3D-T2 Sampling Perfection with Application optimized Contrasts using different flip angle Evolution fat saturated) sequence relative to conventional LS MRI to exclude emergently treatable pathologies in this compl

UNLABELLED: Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) is the next generation of technology used to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). dTMS has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment modality for MDD and may have secondary benefits in patients with chronic low back pain by reducing pain related morbidity. We are presenting two case studies with MDD and chronic low back pain to demonstrate the effectiveness of both the antidepressant and analgesic effects of dTMS.
BACKGROUND: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) utilizes MRI-strength magnetic pulses outside the cranium to

PURPOSE: Repeated back extension exercises (RBEEs) have been reported to cause changes in the distribution and intensity of radicular symptoms. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of RBEEs on the neurophysiology of the compromised nerve root and on standing mobility and pain intensity in patients with sub-acute and chronic lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 40 patients with unilateral sub-acute/chronic LSR voluntarily participated in the study; the patients performed three sets of 10 RBEEs in the prone position with 1 min of res

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) hampers performance and experiencing an episode of LBP is strongly associated with recurrent episodes.
OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of LBP and associated risk factors among young elite athletes in popular sports in the Netherlands were studied.
METHODS: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was performed among 236 young elite athletes aged between 14–25 years in field hockey, football and speed skating.
RESULTS: One hundred and eighty one (n = 181) athletes responded (response rate 77%). The overall, 12-month prevalence of LBP for the three sports was 60%:
