Modulation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis by thyroid hormones: implications in depressive-like behavior.

Hormonal imbalances are involved in many of the age-related pathologies, as neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. Specifically, thyroid state alterations in the adult are related to psychological changes and mood disorders as depression. The dentate gyrus of the hippocampal formation undergoes neurogenesis in adult mammals including humans. Recent evidence suggests that depressive disorders and their treatment are tightly related to the number of newly born neurons in the dentate gyrus. We have studied the effect of thyroid hormones (TH) on hippocampal neurogenesis in adult rats in vivo.

Retaining pathological gamblers in cognitive behavior therapy through motivational enhancement: A pilot study.

Treatment for pathological gambling is in its infancy. Several cognitive and behavioral interventions have shown promise, but high attrition and relapse rates suggest that gamblers requesting treatment are not uniformly committed to change. This article describes an exploratory study with 9 severe pathological gamblers--in their majority horse race bettors--who were recruited from a community treatment center. The gamblers were treated with a hybrid intervention consisting of motivational enhancement and cognitive behavior therapy. All gamblers were retained in treatment and during a 12-month

Evaluation of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region staining in predicting the behavior of meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: The number of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) correlates with cellular proliferative activity. Comparing nonrecurrent, recurrent, atypical and malignant meningiomas we studied the value of the routine applicability of the AgNOR count in the prognostication of this tumor. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-eight meningiomas were reviewed blindly and graded using WHO grading schema. Eighty-one cases were selected and arranged in six groups according to clinical data and grading: 14 benign non-recurrent meningiomas; 14 primary benign recurrent meningiomas a

Is schizoid personality a forerunner of homicidal or suicidal behavior?: a case study.

The authors believe that a relationship exists between schizoid personality disorder and violent acts. The following case study is presented to contemplate such a possible relationship. There is a paucity of research on this topic. The authors suggest that further research closely examine the relationship between violent behavior and those character traits associated with schizoid personality disorder. If such a relationship is found, these character traits could be integrated with other risk factors known to predict violence.

Does the roosting behavior of birds affect transmission dynamics of West Nile virus?

The potential role of many urban passerine birds in the transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) is well-documented by studies on host competency, seroprevalence in wild birds, and identification of vector blood meal source. In contrast, the impact of bird behavior on transmission dynamics is largely unexplored. Bird roosting (perching) behavior may be a critical component regulating WNV transmission because of the crepuscular/nocturnal feeding behavior of Culex mosquitoes, the primary vectors of WNV. We used radio telemetry to determine the roosting behavior of American crows (Corvus brachyrhync

Depression and suicidal behavior in acne patients treated with isotretinoin: a systematic review.

Isotretinoin (13-cis retinoic acid) is an effective treatment for severe cystic or recalcitrant acne vulgaris; however, concerns have been raised regarding its potential association with depression and suicidal behavior. We sought to explore the proposed relationship between isotretinoin use and the risk of depression and attempted and completed suicide in patients with acne vulgaris by performing a systematic literature search for studies reporting primary data on depression and suicidal behavior in patients treated with isotretinoin for acne vulgaris. Nine studies met the qualifying criteria

Resting cortical brain activity and social behavior in higher functioning children with autism.

BACKGROUND: Psychophysiological measurement of processes related to social behavior may be valuable for research on individual differences and subgroups among children with autism spectrum disorders (Coleman, 1987; Dawson, Klinger, Panagiotides, Lewy, & Castelloe, 1995; Modahl et al., 1998). In particular, recent research and theory suggests that measures of resting anterior EEG asymmetry reflect complex brain processes associated with individual differences in approach or avoidance motivation that may be associated with social and emotional interaction tendencies among children with autism.

Social skills and behavior problems in children with disabilities with and without siblings.

This study examined social skills and behavior of children with disabilities (CWD) and the impact of siblings on these behaviors. Eighty-five CWD diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder only (ADHD-o), Learning Disability or Learning Problems (LD/LP), ADHD and LD combined (ADHD/LD) or Spina Bifida (SB) and their siblings were evaluated using standardized social skills and behavior rating scales. The ADHD-o group had significantly lower social skills and more behavior problems than the other groups. There was no recognized effect of the sibling relationship on the social skills a

Cyclic AMP response element-binding protein is required for normal maternal nurturing behavior.

Analysis of mice with targeted disruptions of fosB or the gene encoding dopamine beta-hydroxylase suggests that FosB and adrenergic signaling play critical roles in maternal nurturing behavior. The majority of neonates born to null females from either mutation fail to thrive, and virgin mutant females of both lines exhibit impaired pup retrieval. Considering whether FosB and adrenergic signaling might share a signaling pathway important for maternal behavior, we examined the role of a potential intermediary, cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB). Here we report that approximately

Psychosocial correlates of transmission risk behavior among HIV-seropositive gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify the determinants of sexual transmission risk behavior by HIV-positive individuals. We examined social cognitive theory (SCT) variables, which have been found to mediate the effectiveness of HIV risk reduction interventions. We also sought to identify contextual influences that might contribute to initial levels of SCT factors such as self-efficacy. METHOD: In the present study, a series of social cognitive variables and a number of factors hypothesized to influence self-efficacy were assessed among participants at baseline in the Seropositive Urban Men's Inte

Probability distributions for showering and bathing water-use behavior for various U.S. subpopulations.

It has been shown that bathroom-type water uses dominate personal exposure to water-borne contaminants in the home. Therefore, in assessing exposure of specific population groups to the contaminants in the water, understanding population water-use behavior for bathroom activities as a function of demographic characteristics is vital to realistic exposure estimates. In this article, shower and bath frequencies and durations are analyzed, presented, and compared for various demographic groups derived from analyses of the National Human Activities Pattern Survey (NHAPS) database and the Residenti

Adolescents' behavior in the presence of interparental hostility: developmental and emotion regulatory influences.

Within-family covariation between interparental hostility and adolescent behavior across three interactions over a 2-year period was explored in a sample that included 37 typical adolescents and 35 adolescents recently hospitalized for psychiatric difficulties. More interparental hostility across the three interactions was associated with more adolescent hostility and more positive engagement (at a trend level) regardless of psychiatric background. Parent-to-child hostility in each interaction mediated the link for adolescent hostility but not for positive adolescent engagement. Emotion regula

Biphasic effects of adrenal steroids on learned helplessness behavior induced by inescapable shock.

Corticosterone (CS) has been shown to regulate behavior in the learned helplessness (LH) paradigm. Here we provide evidence for a U-shaped relationship between the increasing doses of CS administered and escape failures in the LH model. Replacement with CS (20-400 microg/ml in drinking water) in adrenalectomized (ADX) animals was utilized to examine how the selective activation of mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid (GR) receptors is related to the behavioral impairments induced by inescapable shock (IS). Available MR and GR levels were determined in hippocampal cytosol by radioligand bi

Competing stimuli in the treatment of multiply controlled problem behavior during hygiene routines.

The current study describes the use of noncontingent competing stimuli in the treatment of problem behavior exhibited by three individuals during staff-assisted hygiene routines. Functional analyses revealed that particular topographies of problem behaviors appeared to be maintained by their own sensory consequences, whereas other topographies appeared to be maintained by escape from demands. Competing stimulus assessments were then conducted to identify items associated with low levels of automatically-maintained problem behavior and high levels of stimulus engagement. Stimuli associated with

Breastfeeding practices and health-seeking behavior for neonatal sickness in a rural community.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of mothers and grandmothers regarding breastfeeding and health-seeking behavior for neonatal sickness in a rural community. A cross-sectional survey, using a triangulation of qualitative (focus group discussion) and quantitative (structured questionnaire) methods was carried out. Although most of the grandmothers and mothers believed in early feeding within 2 h of delivery, they often administered prelacteal feeds such as ghutti and honey. Colostrum was considered beneficial. Most respondents believed that ghutti, water, or both should be give

Behavior of Hylamer polyethylene in hip arthroplasty: comparison of two gamma sterilization techniques.

Hylamer polyethylene was introduced in the 1990s as an alternative to conventional polyethylene. Its chemical and physical properties, and especially its high crystallinity, were claimed to improve resistance to wear. Initially Hylamer devices were sterilized by gamma radiation in air, then the technique was changed and gamma radiation was performed in the absence of oxygen. Clinical experience has shown the early loosening of some devices made from Hylamer. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether early wear and consequent osteolysis was linked to the sterilization method. We retrospect

Perinatal maternal exposure to picrotoxin: effects on sexual behavior in female rat offspring.

A previous study in our laboratory showed that perinatal maternal picrotoxin exposure (0.75 mg/kg) in rats improved heterosexual behavior in male offspring. In the present study, we examined the effects of this maternal treatment on sexual behavior in the female offspring. The dams received 0.75 mg/kg picrotoxin treatment (PT) once a day on the 18th and 21st day of pregnancy, 2 h after parturition and once a day during the first 4 days of lactation. The results showed that (1) at birth, the body weight and anogenital distance were not modified by treatment; (2) female sexual behavior was impro

HIV/hepatitis C virus co-infection in drug users: risk behavior and prevention.

Studies of HIV-positive patients have consistently shown that drug users, in particular injection drug users (IDU), are far more likely to have hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection than other patient groups. HIV incidence and prevalence in IDU has declined in recent years, but HCV remains endemic in this population. HCV antibody prevalence among non-injection users of drugs such as heroin and cocaine is between 5 and 30%, although there are scant data on specific transmission risk behavior. The control of HIV/HCV co-infection must address HCV prevention. Epidemiological studies have suggested tha

Aberrant cellular behavior of mutant torsinA implicates nuclear envelope dysfunction in DYT1 dystonia.

Torsion dystonia-1 (DYT1) dystonia, the most common inherited form of dystonia, is caused by a three base pair deletion that eliminates a single amino acid from the disease protein, torsinA. TorsinA is an "AAA" protein thought to reside in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), yet both its cellular function and the basis for neuronal dysfunction in DYT1 remain unknown. A clue to disease pathogenesis is the fact that mutant, but not wild-type, torsinA forms membranous inclusions in cell culture. To explore the pathobiology of DYT1 dystonia, we generated PC12 neural cell lines that inducibly express w

Immediate early gene expression associated with induction of brooding behavior in Japanese quail.

Certain species can be induced to foster infant or neonatal animals through the process of sensitization. We induced brooding behavior in adult Japanese quail through repeated exposure to foster chicks across five 20-min trials. Brooding behavior was characterized by a bird allowing chicks to approach and remain underneath its wings while assuming a distinctive stationary crouching posture, preening, and feather fluffing. Birds who did not show brooding behavior actively avoided chicks. Among the birds that brooded chicks, females brooded chicks for longer durations compared to males. Brooding
