Child abuse, dissociation, and core beliefs in bulimic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study of bulimic women examined the relationship between the severity of four forms of reported child abuse (emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse) and bulimic pathology. ln addition, it investigated the relationship of abuse with dissociation and core beliefs. METHOD: A sample of 23 women with bulimic disorders completed standardized self-report measures of child abuse, dissociation, core beliefs, and bulimic symptomatology. They also completed diary records of bulimic behaviors. RESULTS: No dimensional relationship was found between any form of child abuse

Melatonin, sleep, and circadian rhythm disorders.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, neuroendocrinology was viewed by many neuroscientists as a ""window to the brain" to an understanding of brain function." In psychiatry, many have viewed sleep physiology as a window in biological psychiatry. This is, in part, because sleep is one of the few easily quantifiable functions of interest to psychiatrists. Melatonin is a hormone with powerful effects on behavior particularly circadian and sleep behavior. In contrast with other hormones, the pathophysiology and pathology of abnormal melatonin secretion is poorly understood. In this article, we document t

Animal models of narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a debilitating sleep disorder with excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy as its two major symptoms. Although this disease was first described about one century ago, an animal model was not available until the 1970s. With the establishment of the Stanford canine narcolepsy colony, researchers were able to conduct multiple neurochemical studies to explore the pathophysiology of this disease. It was concluded that there was an imbalance between monoaminergic and cholinergic systems in canine narcolepsy. In 1999, two independent studies revealed that orexin neurotransmission def

Personality traits and their role as risk modifiers in gaming disorder and internet use disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: After its initial recognition in the DSM-5, Gaming Disorder has now officially been included as a mental disorder in the ICD-11 as a behavioral addiction. In the past decades, research on this phenomenon has increased and in particular theories on its etiopathology have been suggested. In that respect, underlying factors, including neurobiological, social, and psychological factors, have been described. One commonly discussed etiological factor is supposed in specific personality traits. Knowing more about underlying personality factors of Gaming Disorder and other subtypes

Algorithmic analysis of relational learning processes in instructional technology: Some implications for basic, translational, and applied research.

A few noteworthy exceptions notwithstanding, quantitative analyses of relational learning are most often simple descriptive measures of study outcomes. For example, studies of stimulus equivalence have made much progress using measures such as percentage consistent with equivalence relations, discrimination ratio, and response latency. Although procedures may have ad hoc variations, they remain fairly similar across studies. Comparison studies of training variables that lead to different outcomes are few. Yet to be developed are tools designed specifically for dynamic and/or parametric analyse

Effectiveness of enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) in the treatment of anorexia nervosa: a prospective multidisciplinary study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder associated with a wide array of negative health complications and psychiatric comorbidity. Existing evidence for AN treatment in adults is weak, and no empirically supported treatment has been reliably established. The primary objective of this study is to gain knowledge about the effectiveness of enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) for anorexia nervosa delivered in a public hospital setting. Baseline predictors of treatment outcome and dropout are studied. Furthermore, there will be collected blood and stool sa

Alcohol use and HIV pharmacotherapy.

Alcohol consumption by individuals infected with HIV is an important medical management issue with significant implications for the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy as well as an important evolving field of HIV research. Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for poor medication adherence and can modify liver drug metabolism, both of which can lead to the emergence of drug-resistant virus. Research indicates that alcohol consumption greater than 50 g/day (four or five drinks) is a risk factor for liver disease progression among patients with HIV/HCV coinfection. In addition, alcohol-induc

Digital-Assisted Self-interview of HIV or Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Behaviors in Transmasculine Adults: Development and Field Testing of the Transmasculine Sexual Health Assessment.

BACKGROUND: The sexual health of transmasculine (TM) people-those who identify as male, men, or nonbinary and were assigned a female sex at birth-is understudied. One barrier to conducting HIV- and sexually transmitted infection (STI)-related research with this population is how to best capture sexual risk data in an acceptable, gender-affirming, and accurate manner. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to report on the community-based process of developing, piloting, and refining a digitally deployed measure to assess self-reported sexual behaviors associated with HIV and STI transmission for researc

Risky behavior and risk in adolescents with IDDM.

PURPOSE: To determine: (1) the frequency of risky behaviors (alcohol and other drug use, smoking cigarettes, smokeless tobacco use, and unprotected intercourse); (2) the perception of general risks and diabetes-related risks from risky behaviors; (3) if perception of risk is related to engaging in risky behaviors; and (4) if perception of general risks and diabetes-related risks are influenced by age, gender, or race in adolescents with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Decreasing risky behaviors in youth with IDDM is important because of their increased vulnerability to specific dis

Exploring the effect of a culturally adapted and personalized digital CBT-I app in insomnia patients with mild-to-moderate OSA: a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally adapted, interactive, and personalized digital cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-I) for individuals with co-morbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA), and to compare the treatment outcomes with those of insomnia alone. METHODS: This secondary analysis utilized data from a prior randomized controlled trial. The efficacy of digital CBT-I (dCBT-I) on insomnia severity and mental health was assessed in both COMISA and insomnia-only groups at postintervention and at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-ups. RESULTS: Among 38 insomnia

Comparison of Auditory Brainstem Responses Recorded from Three Different Clinical Systems.

BACKGROUND: The auditory brainstem response (ABR) test is used to estimate hearing thresholds and for neurodiagnostic purposes. ABRs can be recorded for traditional stimuli such as broadband clicks and frequency-specific tone bursts (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz). Recently, chirp stimuli (broadband and narrowband chirps [0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz]) have been recommended to be used to record ABRs. PURPOSE: There is a lack of comparative studies of ABR latency, amplitude, and thresholds obtained from these systems for both traditional and chirp stimuli. RESEARCH DESIGN: Repeated measure design. Infectious Causation of Abnormal Host Behavior: Toxoplasma gondii and Its Potential Association With Dopey Fox Syndrome.

The apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, can infect all warm-blooded animals. T. gondii can subtly alter host behaviors-either through manipulation to enhance transmission to the feline definitive host or as a side-effect, or "constraint," of infection. In humans, T. gondii infection, either alone or in association with other co-infecting neurotropic agents, has been reliably associated with both subtle behavioral changes and, in some cases, severe neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Research on the potential impact of T. gondii on the

Superior Intraparietal Sulcus Controls the Variability of Visual Working Memory Precision.

UNLABELLED: Limitations of working memory (WM) capacity depend strongly on the cognitive resources that are available for maintaining WM contents in an activated state. Increasing the number of items to be maintained in WM was shown to reduce the precision of WM and to increase the variability of WM precision over time. Although WM precision was recently associated with neural codes particularly in early sensory cortex, we have so far no understanding of the neural bases underlying the variability of WM precision, and how WM precision is preserved under high load. To fill this gap, we combined

Behavioral intervention with child abuse and neglect.

The range of factors identified as related to child maltreatment has expanded over the years. The literature clearly calls for an ecological approach in which individual, family, community, and societal factors are considered. The behavioral literature to date reflects an unevenness in terms of acceptance of such an approach. Studies are also uneven concerning the faithfulness with which hallmarks of a behavioral approach have been applied. These include individually tailored assessment and intervention based on empirical data and planning for generalization and maintenance. Most intervention

Associations between addictive behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, and smartphone overdependence) and suicidal behaviors among adolescents in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the leading cause of death among adolescents in South Korea. Although substance use has been widely investigated, the roles of smoking, alcohol use, and smartphone overdependence in relation to suicidal thoughts and behaviors among adolescents are less clearly characterized. This study examined the associations between these addictive behaviors and suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts among South Korean adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed data derived from the 2023 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of 52,873 adolesce

The Good Behavior Game as a Universal Preventive Intervention: a Systematic Review of its Long-Term Effects.

The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is a team-based classroom management intervention developed to mitigate disruptive behaviors and promote prosocial behaviors of school-aged children. While the short-term benefits of the GBG are well documented in meta-analyses and systematic reviews, it is less clear for what long-term outcomes the GBG may reduce risk. The goal of this systematic review was to synthesize findings across papers that evaluated the long-term effects of the GBG. A total of 22 papers from 5 original studies examining the influence of the GBG on a myriad of distal outcomes across the li
