Executive Functions and Emotion Regulation in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Borderline Intellectual Disability.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the multiple relations and to determine the differences between executive functions (EFs), emotion regulation, and behavioral and emotional problems in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), borderline intellectual disability (ID), and typical development (TD). The sample included 85 children aged 6 to 11 years, 42 with typical development (TD), 27 with ADHD, and 16 with borderline ID. The results emphasized a positive correlation between adaptive emotion regulation strategies and EFs, and no significant relations betwe

Para-limbic Structural Abnormalities Are Associated With Internalizing Symptoms in Children With Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is associated with a variety of structural abnormalities in the brain, including several within the para-limbic system. Children with PAE have higher rates of internalizing disorders, including depression and anxiety, which may be related to underlying limbic system anomalies. METHODS: Children aged 8 to 16 with PAE (n = 41) or without PAE (n = 36) underwent an magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and parents completed behavioral questionnaires about their children. Semi-automated procedures (FreeSurfer) were used to derive para-limbic volumes fr

Visuospatial exploration and art therapy intervention in patients with Parkinson's disease: an exploratory therapeutic protocol.

Though abnormalities of visuospatial function occur in Parkinson's disease, the impact of such deficits on functional independence and psychological wellbeing has been historically under- recognized, and effective treatments for this impairment are unknown. These symptoms can be encountered at any stage of the disease, affecting many activities of daily living, and negatively influencing mood, self-efficacy, independence, and overall quality of life. Furthermore, visuospatial dysfunction has been recently linked to gait impairment and falls, symptoms that are known to be poor prognostic factor

The relationship between dissociation and binge eating.

Despite research findings demonstrating a relationship between dissociation and binge eating, the psychological processes that may underlie this association remain unclear. The present study examined 2 potential explanations: (a) that dissociation disinhibits behavioral control over eating and (b) that dissociation interferes with self-awareness and undermines body image. A total of 151 female university students completed measures of dissociation, body dissatisfaction, impulsivity, internalization of the thin ideal, body comparison, and binge eating. Correlations confirmed the presence of a r

Psychiatrically referred adolescents with panic attacks: presenting symptoms, stressors, and comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined presenting symptoms, precipitants and comorbidity in a sample of 28 adolescents (21 females, 7 males) who met criteria for clinically significant panic attacks. METHOD: A semistructured psychiatric interview was used to gather information about symptoms and precipitants, from which probable diagnoses were derived for each case. Thirteen subjects also completed a computerized version of the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents. RESULTS: The majority of cases (64%) were referred for anxiety related problems, although 36% presented with other symptoms

[Sequelae and transient sequelae-like symptoms in Bell's palsy].

Four symptoms of sequelae of Bell's palsy, such as abnormal synkinesis, facial spasm, contracture, and crocodile's tear were examined with 351 patients with Bell's palsy. As a result, it was seen transient sequelae-like symptoms which disappeared in recovery process. These 4 symptoms were divided into the persistent symptoms which persisted or appeared (sequelae) after 6 months from onset and the transient sequelae-like symptoms which disappeared before 6 months from onset (transient symptoms). The relation between the sequelae and the transient symptoms were examined. Transient facial spasm w

Steroid treatment response to post SARS-CoV-2 PANS symptoms: Case series.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) is characterized by a wide spectrum of symptoms, including the onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or severely restricted food intake, associated with emotional symptoms, behavioral symptoms, developmental regression, and somatic symptoms. Among the possible triggering agents, infectious agents have been extensively explored. More recently, sporadic case reports describe a possible association between PANS and SARS-CoV-2 infection but data on clinical presentation and treatment are still scarce. METHODS: We describe a c

The moderating effects of social norms and attitudes on the relationship between intimate partner violence and depressive symptoms among women in two provinces of Nepal.

PURPOSE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is often associated with increased depressive symptoms. However, considerable variability exists in this relationship, from null findings to large effect estimates, likely due, in part, to differences in attitudes (thoughts and beliefs), descriptive norms (perceptions of what behaviors occur in a community), and injunctive norms (perceptions of what behaviors are acceptable in a community). In this study, we test the effect of individual- and community-level attitudes and norms on the IPV-depressive symptoms relationship. METHODS: The sample included 9

Concurrent Management of Adolescent Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome and Delirium With Haloperidol.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) manifests in adults as severe nausea accompanied by episodic vomiting and intense abdominal pain, typically associated with prolonged, high-dose cannabis use. The clinical course of CHS is divided into 3 distinct phases: prodromal, hyperemetic, and recovery. Traditional antiemetic and antinausea medications, such as ondansetron and metoclopramide, are often used in the acute clinical setting to address these isolated symptoms. Discussions and occasional use of haloperidol have demonstrated a level of symptom relief in patients with CHS. In several instanc

Heterogeneity of depressive symptoms and associated factors in Korean adults: a latent class analysis using a national data survey.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify latent classes of depressive symptoms among Korean adults and to examine the sociodemographic and biobehavioral factors associated with each subgroup. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from 4,646 adults who participated in the 2022 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Latent class analysis was applied to the 9 items of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to identify distinct subgroups. Multinomial logistic regression was then performed to determine the factors associated with class membership. RESULTS: Three distinct latent cla

Caught in the web of polyvictimization: Network analysis of theoretical clusters versus data-driven groupings of potentially traumatic events among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to multiple potentially traumatic events (PTEs; e.g., maltreatment, family or community violence), is a robust risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Identifying patterns of PTE exposure (i.e., polyvictimization) is essential for understanding youth risk for subsequent PTE exposure and mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The current study used network analysis to characterize interrelations among PTEs and their connections to PTSD symptoms, and examined whether theoretically grounded classifications versus data-driven constellations of individual PTEs differ

Promoting Flexibility in Expectations: A Randomized-Controlled Online-Intervention Study for Mild Psychopathological Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Research demonstrates that mental disorders are associated with specific dysfunctional expectations and a reduced ability to adjust them, even after expectation-violating experiences. The ViolEx (violated expectation) model offers a framework to explain why expectations persist or change, introducing the concept of cognitive immunization as a potential explanation for differences in information processes. Expectation-focused psychological interventions (EFPI) aim to promote expectation adaptation. METHOD: This study examines the effectiveness of an online EFPI platform for individ

Depression, anxiety, and internalizing symptoms in Spanish children and adolescents: estimated rates and comorbidity patterns.

The mental health of children and adolescents is a critical concern, as a significant proportion of internalizing disorders emerge early in life, highlighting the importance of timely identification and intervention. However, recent data on the prevalence and comorbidity of these disorders among Spanish youth remain scarce. This study aims to examine the estimated rates and comorbidity patterns of internalizing symptoms -including depression, generalized (GAD) and social anxiety, somatic complaints, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating behavior

Improvement in Functional Outcomes in Patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

This case report describes outcomes of three cases with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) who presented with an inability to state the symptoms of BPPV. The diagnosis is driven by patient-reported symptoms during positional testing or movement changes. People with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have BPPV but report no symptoms of spinning (vestibular agnosia). The case report demonstrates that functional improvements are made in patients with vestibular agnosia. All cases were seen in an inpatient rehabilitation unit. Case 1 presented with a bilateral TBI with a daily Agitated B

Impulse control and related behavioral disorders in Parkinson's disease. Risk factors, diagnosis, and management. Is there a possible role for non-invasive brain stimulation?

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Among the non-motor symptoms, Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) and related behaviors (ICBs), severely affect patient's global health. Despite their psychosocial consequences, ICDs are underrecognized in PD because routine screening is still not common. The main risk factor for ICDs is the use of dopamine agonists (DAs). Therefore, the latest guidelines on ICDs management emphasize pharmacological adjustments. However, these approaches are not always feasible due to the recurrence or worsening

Quantitative Expression of Latent Disease Factors in Individuals Associated with Psychopathology Dimensions and Treatment Response.

Psychiatric comorbidity is common in symptom-based diagnoses like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention/deficit hyper-activity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, these co-occurring symptoms mediated by shared and/or distinct neural mechanisms are difficult to profile at the individual level. Capitalizing on unsupervised machine learning with a hierarchical Bayesian framework, we derived latent disease factors from resting-state functional connectivity data in a hybrid cohort of ASD and ADHD and delineated individual associations with dimensional symptoms bas
