A new peptide named BmK dITAP3 from scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) has been identified to possess a dual bioactivity, a depressant neurotoxicity on insects and an analgesic effect on mice. The bioassays also showed that the peptide was definitely devoid of the neurotoxicity on mammals, which indicated that the analgesic effect of BmK dITAP3 could not be ascribed to the syndromic effects of a mammalian neurotoxicity. Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), an important defense against viral infections, is generally measured in 51Cr-release assays. However, the effect of ADCC on viral burden is more relevant in vivo. An assay was developed to determine the impact of antibody and cytotoxic cells on reducing the amount of measles virus cultured from infected cells. A Tox- mutant of Shigella dysenteriae 1, SC501, was genetically engineered by cloning the Shiga toxin operon, inserting a cassette into the A subunit gene, and exchanging this in vitro-mutagenized sequence with the wild-type gene. Cyproheptadine has recently been reported to blunt the furosemide-induced rise in PRA in normal subjects and to acutely lower plasma aldosterone levels in patients with hyperaldosteronism due to bilateral adrenal hyperplasia; both actions have tentatively been ascribed to the antiserotoninergic action of the drug.
