Comparison of two models of biofilm formation on reusable stainless steel medical device material.

BACKGROUND: Reusable medical devices require reprocessing before subsequent patient use. Inadequate reprocessing can create suitable conditions for contaminating microbes to form biofilm. Despite this threat, there is a lack of guidance for medical device manufacturers to make biofilm assessment on their device labelling and instructions for use. Currently, there are no US Food and Drug Administration-recognized standardized models for biofilm formation on medical devices or device materials. AIM: To assess established standard methods for their suitability to be used as validation tools for

Bioactive caries-preventing effects of mineral ions released from surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler on oral biofilm.

OBJECTIVE: The bioactive caries-preventing effects of mineral ions released from surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler on oral biofilm were estimated by analyzing the depth-specific density of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis. DESIGN: Ten participants wore in situ plaque-generating enamel slab devices on their upper molars to form biofilm for 5 days. Filtrates were prepared from prophylaxis paste slurries containing S-PRG filler, whereas paste without the filler served as the control. The devices were alternately immersed in sucrose solution three times and in the e

Unveiling the impact of allulose on oral microbiota and biofilm formation via a cariogenic potential assessment platform.

INTRODUCTION: The increased consumption of refined carbohydrates, particularly sucrose, has contributed to metabolic disorders and oral diseases such as dental caries by promoting dysbiotic biofilm formation and reducing microbial diversity. Allulose, a rare sugar with physicochemical properties similar to sucrose, has been suggested to offer metabolic health benefits; however, its impact on oral biofilm ecology remains unclear. METHODS: We evaluated the cariogenic potential of allulose using a multi-tiered in vitro platform consisting of single-species planktonic and biofilm models, a dual-s

ACLY Promotes Cardiac Fibrosis via the Regulation of DNL and Histone Acetylation.

BACKGROUND: ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) is a key enzyme in de novo lipogenesis that generates acetyl-CoA from citrate. Although fatty acids are required for energy production and biomass synthesis in the heart, the regulatory mechanisms of ACLY-mediated de novo lipogenesis in pathological cardiac fibroblasts remain unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the biological role of ACLY in cardiac remodeling. METHODS: Adeno-associated virus serotype 9-mediated shRNA targeting Acly was intravenously injected into C57BL/6J male mice. The mice were subsequently continuously infused with a mixt

GmFER1, a soybean ferritin, enhances tolerance to salt stress and root rot disease and improves soybean yield.

The plant stress response mechanism is activated by biotic and abiotic stresses, but its continuous activation typically affects growth. The role of ferritin in regulating biomass accumulation has been extensively characterized in diverse plant species; however, the underlying mechanisms through which it contributes to salt stress tolerance and Fusarium resistance remain poorly understood. Here, we confirm that overexpression of ferritin leads to iron accumulation and Fe3+ sequestration in both aboveground and roots, activating the iron uptake and transport system. More importantly, GmFER1 enh

Fibronectin recognition by the emerging multidrug-resistant opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida haemulonii.

The multidrug-resistant pathogen Candida haemulonii (Candidozyma haemuli) can cause superficial and systemic infections in vulnerable individuals. The ability of C. haemulonii to interact with extracellular matrix (ECM) components remains largely unexplored. Herein, we investigated C. haemulonii's capacity to bind to fibronectin and assessed how this ECM protein influences fungal adhesion and biofilm development. The results revealed that C. haemulonii yeasts can recognize and interact with soluble fibronectin in a dose-dependent and isolate-specific manner, as demonstrated by flow cytometry.

Geno-pheno characterization of crop rhizospheres: an integrated Raman spectroscopy and microbiome approach in conventional and organic agriculture.

INTRODUCTION: Agricultural management practices strongly influence soil microbiomes, with broad implications for ecosystem function. Yet, the combined phenotypic and compositional dynamics of rhizosphere microbial communities across conventional and organic farming systems remain poorly characterized, underscoring the need for integrated approaches to understand how management decisions drive microbial assembly and function. METHODS: We investigated microbial communities associated with conventionally and organically cultivated horticultural crops across multiple farms in New York State. To c

Humic acid from vermicompost effectively regulates the redox status and mitigates the progression of experimental periodontitis.

The progression of periodontal disease (PD) involves the action of oxidative stress mediators. Antioxidant agents may potentially attenuate the development of this condition. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of humic acid (HA), extracted from biomass vermicomposting, on redox status and parameters related to PD progression in rats. Fifty-four adult male Wistar rats were distributed into six experimental groups (control; PD; PD + 40 mg/kg of HA; PD + 80 mg/kg of HA; PD + 160 mg/kg of HA; PD + 320 mg/kg of HA). HA was administered by gavage for 28 days, and PD was induce

Traditional medicine, environmental exposures, and cultural practices in cancer risk: insights from low- and middle-income countries.

Cancer is a growing public health concern in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), influenced by cultural practices, environmental exposures, and dependence on traditional medicine in addition to biological risk factors. Evidence from peer-reviewed publications published between 2010 and 2025 was combined in this narrative review. According to studies, traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is used by 35% to 79% of cancer patients in LMICs, which frequently delays biomedical treatment and complicates care. Over 2.4 billion people use biomass fuels for household air pollution (HAP),

Formal and informal antimicrobial trade and usage in farmed animals of the urban area of Lomé, Togo.

Inappropriate antibiotic use in livestock is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance. Surveillance and prevention efforts in low-income countries are challenged by widespread informal sales and administration. We investigated the antibiotics trade network for farm animals and farmers' antibiotic purchasing and usage behaviors in an urban region with high human and animal population density and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 116 farmers in Lomé, Togo, in areas where multidrug-resistant bacteria had been identified. Using multiple-factor ana

Anthropogenic pressures at the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field: 30 years of research activities.

The deep sea, the Earth's largest environment, faces increasing threats from human activities. Among the multiple ecosystems, hydrothermal vents harbor unique chemosynthetic communities that are characterized by elevated faunal biomass, high endemicity and low diversity compared to the surrounding environments. These ecosystems are particularly vulnerable but only a few vent sites are included in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), although they are increasingly targeted by mining industries for their mineral resources. The Lucky Strike (LS) vent field, discovered in 1992, is located within a Portu

Diving into commercial cellulase formulations for circular polyester/cotton separation through targeted depolymerization of cotton.

The rapid growth of the textile industry, driven by fast fashion trends, has significantly increased textile waste, particularly blends of polyester (PET) and cotton fibers, and efficient recycling of blended textiles requires effective fiber separation methods, yet current strategies face substantial limitations. This study investigates the performance of commercially available cellulase formulations for enzymatic depolymerization of cotton and suggests an optimized activity pattern for novel reactor systems for recycling of PET/cotton blends. Thirty-five cellulase formulations intended for b

Carbon dioxide and methane fluxes in different waterbodies in Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea, East Antarctica.

The Southern Ocean (SO) is one of the most important sinks of atmospheric CO2. However, it is lacking data from the other waterbodies of Antarctic continent. This study investigated in situ CO2 and CH4 fluxes in different waterbodies, including coastal seawater of the Terra Nova Bay (TNB) polynya, Ross Sea, snow/meltwater of Nansen Ice Shelf, and lakes of Inexpressible Island, East Antarctica during summer, 2022-2023. The results indicate that the TNB polynya is a significant atmospheric CO2 sink (-133.7--8.0 mmol m-2 d) and a weak CH4 source (-2.5-13.5 μmol m-2 day-1). In contrast, lakes are

Electroactive taxa stabilise a metal overdosed syntrophic propionate oxidising methanogenic consortia.

Propionate oxidation is a critical yet rate-limiting step in anaerobic digestion (AD), vulnerable to disruption by metal toxicity. Electroactive bacteria facilitating extracellular electron transfer (EET) may mitigate such toxicities; yet mechanisms remain unclear. This study hypothesized that ethanol feed electroactive taxa mitigate continuous metal overdosing stress by augmenting propionate oxidation and methanogenesis. Duplicate expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors were operated under two regimes (i) propionate enrichment (PE) or, (ii) with propionate plus ethanol enrichment (EE). A

Physiological responses and lipidomic analysis underlying lithium tolerance in Cardamine violifolia.

The rapid expansion of electronics and electric vehicle industries has substantially increased electronic waste generation, exacerbating soil and water lithium (Li) contamination. Despite growing environmental concerns, research on Li phytotoxicity mechanisms remains limited. This study investigated Li tolerance in Cardamine violifolia using controlled exposure to lithium chloride (LiCl) at concentrations of 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg L-1. Key findings demonstrate that 400 mg L-1 LiCl (a high-concentration exposure) significantly reduced biomass and total chlorophyll content by 37.1 % and 15.6 %

Elevated CO2 alters age-dependent variation in secondary metabolites, C/N ratio and growth of perennial herb, Aristolochia contorta.

Understanding how growth and defense strategies of perennial plants change across developmental stages in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 is critical for predicting adaptive responses and ecological interactions under future climate scenarios. In this study, Aristolochia contorta, a perennial herb, was examined across age groups (1-, 2-, and 10-year-old plants), under ambient and elevated CO2 (540 ppm, simulating RCP 4.5). Growth traits, carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios, and concentrations of secondary metabolites in both above- and below-ground tissues were measured to evaluate developmen

Interactive mechanism of elevated pCO2 and nutrient on 2-methylisoborneol production in cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacterial blooms, exacerbated by climate change and eutrophication, increasingly compromise water quality by producing taste and odor (T&O) compounds including 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Cyanobacteria synthesize MIB by redirecting carbon metabolism intermediates into the methylerythritol phosphate pathway. This process appears to be influenced by rising atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). This study examines how elevated pCO2 affects MIB production in Synechococcus sp. FACHB-1061 under varying nutrient conditions. The results indicate that elevated pCO2 boosts cyanobacterial biomass a

Growth stage-specific responses of cucumber to salinity stress: germination, seedling establishment, and vegetative development.

Salinity is a major abiotic stress limiting cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) production, especially in areas where saltwater intrusion is present and brackish water is used for irrigation. This study evaluated salinity tolerance in cucumber cultivars across three growth stages-germination, seedling, and vegetative-using various concentrations of brackish water ranging from 0 to 31 dS·m-1. Germination results revealed distinct cultivar responses, with 'Diva' performing well and 'Striped Armenian' showing poor emergence. However, at the seedling and vegetative stages, 'Striped Armenian' consistentl

Depth and Seasonality of Soil Respiration in Caragana korshinskii Plantation on the Loess Plateau.

Quantifying deep soil (10-100 cm) and non-growing-season soil respiration (SR) is crucial for refining carbon (C) cycle models, yet the regulatory mechanisms governing these processes remain unclear. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on deep soils and non-growing seasons to elucidate how soil properties regulate SR under these special conditions. We conducted an on-site field experiment in the Caragana korshinskii plantation, measuring SR at soil depths of 0-10 cm, 10-50 cm, and 50-100 cm during the non-growing season and growing. The results suggested that the annual cumulative soil
