Advances in technology have made available automated devices for rapid and easy measurements of arterial blood pressure. This study evaluates the performance of one such device, the Hitachi Digital Blood Pressure and Pulse Monitor, Model HME-20, against a standard mercury sphygmomanometer, the Accoson . Fifty four sets of systolic and diastolic readings were simultaneously obtained using the two instruments. Samples of maternal and fetal blood from 32 cases of placental intervillous thrombosis have been analysed for blood group incompatibility and compared to a control group of 21 cases. No overall link has been demonstrated between intervillous thrombosis and ABO incompatibility. Red cell antibody reactions of all types probably account for only a small proportion of thrombi and it is suggested that the principle mechanism may be a thromboplastin release from the damaged vasculo-syncytial membrane, causing a coagulation of the mixed maternal and fetal cells.

The distribution of gas values of umbilical cord blood was studied in an university clinic population during a period of 3 yr. All patients in labor were guided by obstetrical personnel and continuous electronic fetal monitoring (CTG). Microblood analyses were performed on indication of the CTG. Several clinical studies have associated nasal packing in the treatment of epistaxis with hypoxemia on the basis of a possible nasopulmonary reflex. Ten patients in a retrospective review of 250 kidney transplant recipients had RBC-cold agglutinins reactive at 22 C. Fourteen transplants were performed in those 10 patients. Five of nine cold renal allografts failed to function. Two of these recipients later had successful transplants when the kidneys were warmed before reestablishment of blood flow.
