Cerebral malaria (CM) remains a deadly complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection, and children are at high risk of developing encephalopathy as a result of CM. This is probably a consequence of the activation of many of the inflammatory cytokines as well as the glial cells and the vascular endothelium in the brain. We have previously demonstrated that there is a striking reduction in cerebral blood flow by magnetic resonance imaging when mice are infected with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA), and we now demonstrate a possible role for endothelin (ET-1) in the pathogenesis of CM. The brains

OBJECTIVE: To study HCV replication in HepG2 cell line and to establish a stable HepG2 cell line infected with HCV.
METHODS: Continuous inoculation of anti-HVC positive and HCVRNA RT-PCR positive sera was used to infect HepG2 cells. The plus and minus strains of HCVRNA were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in the HepG2 cells. Virus particles were observed in postinoculated HepG2 cells by transmission electron microscope. Immunohistochemical staining was used respectively to detect HCV antigen, HCVNS5 and HVC capsid in postinoculated HepG2 cells.
RESULTS: HCV RNAs (

OBJECTIVE: To review the incidence and causes of the infections and metabolic diseases of the nervous system in patients with systemic neoplasias.
DEVELOPMENT: Patients with immunodeficiency, particularly those with hematological neoplasias and persons treated with immunosuppressive drugs have a considerable tendency to infection due to opportunist germs. Infections of the nervous system are relatively rare (0.02%-1%) and the commonest neoplasms are lymphomas, especially those of Hodgkin type and lymphosarcomas. The most frequent infections are caused by the herpes virus, meningitis due to Li

Human microsporidiosis is a parasitic infection due to species of four different genera: Encephalitozoon; Enterocytozoon; Nosema; and Pleistophora. Although well known as a cause of disease in animals, microsporidiosis was only occasionally reported in humans. Recently, in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, microsporidia belonging to Encephalitozoon and Enterocytozoon species have proved to be important opportunistic pathogens. Enterocytozoon bieneusi is associated with chronic intermittent diarrhea, cholangiopathy and sinusitis whereas Encephalitozoon intestinalis, Encephal

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Trichinella spiralis infection in the rat produces mucosal injury and inflammation and causes changes in muscle function and neurotransmitter release in the longitudinal muscle myenteric plexus (LMMP). Whether these changes in LMMP reflect the production of inflammatory mediators in the LMMP remains unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the profile of interleukins (IL) 1-alpha, 1-beta, and 6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha in the LMMP of infected rats. Because muscle changes are T-cell dependent, we also studied the cytokine profile in infected athymic

INTRODUCTION: The virulence factor CagA is critical in mediating inflammation, and Helicobacter pylori PMSS1 dynamically modulates cagA copy number in response to host immune pressure. Co-infection with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium has been shown to heighten systemic inflammation and reduce H. pylori colonization while maintaining type IV secretion system functionality. This suggests that the inflammatory environments induced by co-infection may influence H. pylori virulence mechanisms. This study investigates whether H. pylori PMSS1 regulates its cagA copy number during systemic c

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus can cause a variety of conditions such as bacteremia, sepsis, toxic shock syndrome, pneumonia, and infective endocarditis; therefore, a rapid and accurate diagnosis should be made to pinpoint the site of infection. This study aimed to use the existing nuclear medicine tracer [99mTc]Tc-dimercaptosuccinic acid galactosyl human serum albumin ([99mTc]Tc-GSA) as a simple technique for the early diagnosis of S. aureus infection.
METHODS: The in vitro studies evaluated the accumulation of [99mTc]Tc-GSA in S. aureus. In addition, the effect of metabolic and vital a

Diarrhea is a severe bovine disease, globally prevalent in farm animals with a decrease in milk production and a low fertility rate. Cryptosporidium spp. are important zoonotic agents of bovine diarrhea. However, little is known about microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) changes in yaks infected with Cryptosporidium spp. Therefore, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing and detected the concentrations of SCFAs in Cryptosporidium-infected yaks. Results showed that over 80,000 raw and 70,000 filtered sequences were prevalent in yak samples. Shannon (p<0.01) and Simpson (p<0.01) were both sig

Primary immunodeficiency diseases are inherited defects of the innate or adaptive arms of the immune system that lead to an increase in the incidence, frequency, or severity of infections and/or immune dysregulation. There may be defects in the adaptive arm of the immune system, including combined immunodeficiencies and antibody deficiency syndromes, or abnormalities in innate immunity, such as defects of phagocytes, the complement pathway, or toll-like receptor mediated signaling. Recurrent sinopulmonary infections with encapsulated bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae type B or Streptococ

In the spring of 2006, four human cases of parapoxvirus infections in Missouri residents were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two of which were initially diagnosed as cutaneous anthrax. This investigation was conducted to determine the level of recognition of zoonotic parapoxvirus infections and prevention measures, the degree to which veterinarians may be consulted on human infections and what forces were behind this perceived increase in reported infections. Interviews were conducted and clinical and environmental sampling was performed. Swab and scab specim

Salmonella Pullorum (S. Pullorum) incurs high mortality in chicks and disrupts intestinal health, and poses a severe threat to poultry industry and human health. However, in Chinese Taihe Black-Bone Silky Fowls (TBSF), the jejunum biomarker and molecular mechanism responding to S. Pullorum inoculation remain elusive. This study aims to characterize the jejunum proteome changes of TBSF affected by S. Pullorum. Using a data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics method, jejunum samples were collected from chicks and analyzed. These samples corresponded to the following treatment groups: the bl

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that is widespread in the Amazon basin, where it co-circulates with the closely related chikungunya virus (CHIKV). Due to the limited surveillance and technical limitations of diagnostic assays (scarcity of commercial assays, serology cross-reactivity), the true burden of MAYV is uncertain. We designed a new RT-qPCR assay targeting the nsp1 gene for MAYV detection, which can be used in monoplex or duplex format. In the duplex format, the new MAYV assay is combined with a CHIKV assay and a second MAYV assay, both previously published. The lower

Since May 2022, the multi-country outbreak of monkeypox (mpox) has raised a great concern worldwide. Early detection of mpox virus infection is recognized as an efficient way to prevent mpox transmission. Mpox specific detection methods reported up to now are based on the SNPs among mpox virus and other orthopoxviruses. We have therefore developed a real-time PCR based mpox detection method targeting mpox virus specific sequences (N3R and B18Rplus). We have also optimized an orthopoxvirus detection system which targets the highly conserved E9L and D6R genes. The mpox and orthopoxvirus real-tim
