Social perspective-taking and adjustment in emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal children.

Preadolescent emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal boys were compared on social perspective-taking and behavioral measures to examine possible contributions of social cognitive deficits to children's adjustment problems. Antisocial-prosocial and withdrawn-gregarious behavior dimensions were studied through subscales derived from teacher ratings. Results indicated that across all groups, high perspective-taking was associated with significantly less withdrawal than was low perspective-taking; within groups, this finding was significant only for the emotionally disturbed boys. Deconstructing Participant Behaviors in Virtual Reality Simulation: Ethnographic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR)-based simulation is an increasingly popular tool for simulation-based medical education, immersing participants in a realistic, 3D world where health care professionals can observe nuanced examination findings, such as subtle indicators of respiratory distress and skin perfusion. However, it remains unknown how the VR environment affects participant behavior and attention. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe clinician attention and decision-making behaviors during interprofessional pediatric resuscitation simulations performed in VR. We used video-based fo

[Crime prevention in high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders with paraphilia].

Paraphilia refers to occasional concomitant disorders of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). When a restricted interest of PDD is focused on a sexual object, paraphilia may be develop as a problematic symptom. However, having this concomitant disorder does not always result in criminal behavior. When the social interactivity of a particular patient with PDD is severely impaired, paraphilia could lead to a sex crime. Because pedophilia targets sacrifice innocent and defenseless children, it is critical to prevent such sex crimes by understanding the psychopathology of PDD with paraphilia, e

Obsessive-compulsive traits in children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

The objective of this study is to examine the occurrence and characteristic features of obsessive-compulsive behaviours in children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS), with respect to a matched obsessive compulsive disorder group (OCD) and a typically developing control group (CG). For this purpose, 60 subjects (20 OCD; 18 AS; 22 CG), aged 8-15 years, matched for age, gender and IQ were compared. AS and OCD patients were diagnosed according to the DSM-IV-TR criteria. The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule were used to assist in the AS di

Neuropsychological outcome after surgery of frontal lobe epilepsy in children with good seizure outcome.

One third of children with drug-resistant epilepsy included in surgical programmes have frontal lobe epilepsy. Frontal lobe epilepsy in itself constitutes a high risk of impacting neurocognitive and behavioral development. In this study, we characterized the long-term neuropsychological and behavioral outcomes of children with pharmacoresistant structural focal epilepsy who underwent frontal neurosurgery. The clinical variables that may influence these outcomes were also investigated. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation - including a behavioral questionnaire - was administered to 37

Challenging Case: 2 Year Old With "Autistic Behaviors".

"George" is a 2-year, 9-month-old boy who presented for Developmental Behavioral Pediatric evaluation with the concern of global developmental delay and autistic behaviors. He had been receiving early intervention support since he turned 2 years, receiving a parent coaching model with a developmental specialist.During the clinical interview, parents endorsed limited expressive language skills and felt that his receptive language outpaced his expressive language skills. They reported consistent response to name when called and integration of eye contact and other nonverbal gestures (e.g., point

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients treated with bracing, surgery, or observation showed no difference in behavioral and emotional function over a 2-year period.

The purpose of this study was to assess if behavior and emotional function, as measured by the Pearson Behavioral Assessment Survey for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) in patients and parents, changes with differing treatment protocols in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). One previous study showed abnormal BASC-2 scores in a substantial number of patients diagnosed with AIS; however, no study has assessed how these scores change over the course of treatment. AIS patients aged 12 to 21 years completed the BASC-2. The 176-item questionnaire was administered to subjects at en

Eating Behaviors, Caregiver Feeding Interactions, and Dietary Patterns of Children Born Preterm: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Infants born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) often experience feeding problems during hospitalization. Whether difficulties persist or have long-term sequelae on childhood eating is unclear. We aimed to describe the oromotor eating skills (e.g., chewing/swallowing), eating behaviors (e.g., food neophobia), food parenting practices (e.g., pressure to eat), and dietary patterns of preterm children during late infancy (6-12 mo) and early childhood (>12 mo-7 y) and to determine whether these differed from those of term-born peers. We identified 67 articles (57 unique studies) for inclusion. We us

Parenteral artemisinins are associated with reduced mortality and neurologic deficits and improved long-term behavioral outcomes in children with severe malaria.

BACKGROUND: In 2011, the World Health Organization recommended injectable artesunate as the first-line therapy for severe malaria (SM) due to its superiority in reducing mortality compared to quinine. There are limited data on long-term clinical and neurobehavioral outcomes after artemisinin use for treatment of SM. METHODS: From 2008 to 2013, 502 Ugandan children with two common forms of SM, cerebral malaria and severe malarial anemia, were enrolled in a prospective observational study assessing long-term neurobehavioral and cognitive outcomes following SM. Children were evaluated a week aft

Impact of family and caregiver factors on development and behaviours in maltreated young children.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of developmental and emotional/ behavioural concerns in maltreated children and to examine the impact of adverse family/caregiver risk factors on these outcomes. METHOD: We analysed family demographic and baseline data of 132 maltreated children and their caregivers from a family support programme in Singapore. We examined the associations of 3 main risk factors (i.e., caregiver mental health, educational attainment, and family socio-economic status [SES]) with developmental/behavioural outcomes using multivariable logistic regression,

Relationships between parenting and illness factors and child behaviour difficulties in children with asthma and/or eczema.

Chronic health conditions such as asthma and eczema are common and are associated with significant psychosocial sequelae for children and their families. A number of parenting variables have been implicated in child health outcomes; however, there are gaps in understanding of the relationships between parenting and child adjustment in the context of chronic illness. This study examined the role that modifiable parenting factors including parenting style, self-efficacy, and adjustment play in explaining general and illness-related child behaviour and emotional problems. Parents (N = 107) of chi

Developmental transitions in presentations of externalizing problems among boys and girls at risk for child maltreatment.

The present study examined the impact of children's maltreatment experiences on the emergence of externalizing problem presentations among children during different developmental periods. The sample included 788 youth and their caregivers who participated in a multisite, prospective study of youth at-risk for maltreatment. Externalizing problems were assessed at ages 4, 8, and 12, and symptoms and diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder were assessed at age 14, during interviews with youth and caregivers. Mothers and infants exposed to intimate partner violence compensate.

Reasons for the developmental variability in children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) are unclear and under studied. This article presents exploratory findings on (a) the potential impact of IPV on mother-child relationships and child development and (b) the association between these maternal-child relationship impacts and child development. The fit of findings with compensatory, spillover, and compartmentalization hypotheses was explored. Participants were 49 mothers and 51 children younger than 3 years of age affected by IPV. Data were collected on maternal-child interactions, chi

Association of Multigenerational Family History of Depression With Lifetime Depressive and Other Psychiatric Disorders in Children: Results from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

IMPORTANCE: Three-generation family studies of depression have established added risk of psychopathology for offspring with 2 previous generations affected with depression compared with 1 or none. Because of their rigorous methodology, there are few of these studies, and existing studies are limited by sample sizes. Consequently, the 3-generation family risk paradigm established in family studies can be a critical neuropsychiatric tool if similar transmission patterns are reliably demonstrated with the family history method. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of multigenerational family hi

Sex differences in the determinants of suicide attempt among adolescents in China.

Little is known about the sex differences in the determinants of suicide attempt among adolescents. The results from 14,820 students in China revealed that girls who were in younger age (10-13y), living in urban area, having lower social support and exposed to physical abuse were more likely to report SA compared to their boys counterparts. Conversely, the impact of having psychological symptoms on SA was stronger in boys than girls. Our findings highlight the importance that groups at highest risk of SA should be targeted accordingly by sex.

Parental support in promoting children's health behaviours and preventing overweight and obesity - a long-term follow-up of the cluster-randomised healthy school start study II trial.

BACKGROUND: Effects of obesity prevention interventions in early childhood are only meaningful if they are sustained over time, but long-term follow-up studies are rare. The school-based cluster-randomised Healthy School Start (HSS) trial aimed at child health promotion and obesity prevention through parental support was carried out in 31 pre-school classes (378 families) in disadvantaged areas in Sweden during 2012-2013. Post-intervention results showed intervention effects on intake of unhealthy foods and drinks, and lower BMI-sds in children with obesity at baseline. This study aimed to eva

Comorbidity and correlates of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder in 6-8-year-old children with ADHD.

This study aimed to characterize the nature and impact of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) including its co-occurrence with other comorbidities and its independent influence on daily functioning. Children with ADHD (6-8 years) were recruited through 43 Melbourne schools, using a 2-stage screening (parent and teacher Conners 3 ADHD index) and case-confirmation (Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children, Version IV; [DISC-IV]) procedure. Proxy DMDD diagnosis was confirmed via items from the oppositional defiant disord

Assessment of brief interventions for nighttime fears in preschool children.

UNLABELLED: Nighttime fears (NF) and sleep problems continue to be major problems in clinical services. The aim was to assess the effects of two brief interventions on NF, and related sleep problems and parental fear-reducing behaviors in children. One hundred and four children aged 4-6 years with significant NF were randomly assigned into two intervention groups: the Huggy-Puppy intervention (HPI), which is based on providing children a puppy doll with a request to take care of the doll, and a revised version (HPI-r) which is based on providing the same doll with a cover story that the doll w

Double burden of malnutrition among children under five years in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study of prevalence and determinants.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among children under 5 years remains a major global public health concern. It encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition, which can coexist within the same population. Estimating the prevalence of malnutrition among preschool children, will contribute to the limited body of city-level nutritional epidemiology studies in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition among children under 5 years attending primary health care centers (PHCs) in Taif, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among

Prenatal exposure to phthalates, maternal oxidative stress, and early childhood neurobehavior: a pathway modeling approach.

OBJECTIVE: Phthalates are recognized endocrine disruptors and emerging neurotoxicants. Prenatal exposure to di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) has been linked to adverse neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric outcomes, and maternal oxidative stress may play a mechanistic role in prenatal DEHP's neurotoxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were drawn from the New York University Children's Health and Environment Study. Prenatal DEHP exposure and maternal lipid peroxidation were assessed using repeated creatinine-adjusted maternal urinary measurements across pregnancy, collected from Janua
