Interdisciplinary evaluation of consecutive patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate at age 6, 15, and 25 years: a concurrent standardized procedure and documentation by plastic surgeon; speech and language pathologist; ear, nose, and throat specialist; and orthodontist.

PURPOSE: To evaluate surgical results, speech, hearing, and craniofacial morphology after primary cleft repair performed from 1973 to 1979. METHODS: During the years 1972 to 1985, all primary cleft surgeries were performed by 1 plastic surgeon, using Tennison lip closure combined with a periosteoplasty on the clefted alveolus at age 3 months. By mobilizing mucoperiosteal flaps, bony bridges were induced in the alveolar process in approximately 60% of the cases. All patients had the soft palate closed at age 24 months by a pushback technique. All children with complete unilateral clefts withou

Atypical brain responses to sounds in children with specific language and reading impairments.

This study tested if children with specific language impairment (SLI) or children with specific reading disability (SRD) have abnormal brain responses to sounds. We tested 6- to 12-year-old children with SLI (N =19), children with SRD (N =55), and age-matched controls (N =36) for their passive auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) to tones, rapid tones, vowels and consonant-vowels. Thirty-eight percent of the children with SLI or SRD had less typical passive auditory ERPs in the N1-P2 window to sounds in general, rather than to tones, rapid tones, vowels or consonant-vowels specifically. School-aged children with SLI: the ICF as a framework for collaborative service delivery.

UNLABELLED: Reports of associated disabilities among children with specific language impairment (SLI) and children with other developmental disabilities are widespread. Clinicians require a broader definition of SLI that recognizes associated disabilities because it is their goal to impact children's everyday functioning. In this paper, we explore SLI from a broader perspective in which consideration is given to features known to be common across different developmental disabilities. Outcome measurement in dysphagia: not so hard to swallow.

This article reports on the use of a new tool from the Australian Therapy Outcome Measures (AusTOMs) set-the Swallowing scale. The scale is one of six, designed to measure outcomes of clients attending speech pathology practices in Australia. The tool was used for six months in clinical practices across 14 healthcare sites in Victoria, Australia (including six acute hospitals, six rehabilitation services, one specialist pediatric hospital, and one specialist cancer institute). This article provides preliminary descriptive data and analyses of outcomes from swallowing therapy, along with discus

FMRI-determined language lateralization in patients with unilateral or mixed language dominance according to the Wada test.

Due to the reported variability of the language laterality index (LI) across fMRI studies, reliable distinction between patients with unilateral and mixed language dominance is currently not possible, preventing clinical implementation of fMRI as a replacement for the invasive Wada test. Variability of the LI may be related to differences in experimental and control tasks, and statistical methodology. The goal of this study was to improve detection power of fMRI for hemispheric language dominance by using a combined analysis of four different language tasks (CTA), that has previously shown mor

A problem with auditory processing?

Recent studies have found associations between auditory processing deficits and language disorders such as dyslexia; but whether the former cause the latter, or simply co-occur with them, is still an open question.

Smoking during pregnancy and babbling abilities of the 8-month-old infant.

Animal experiments suggest that the fetal brain is sensitive to nicotine. Although much attention has been given to the relation between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and neurodevelopment in children, this remains controversial. Our study describes the relationship between maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy and babbling abilities of the 8-month-old infant. In a longitudinal cohort, information was collected at the 16th week of gestation, at delivery and when the infant was about 8 months old. At this age babbling abilities of the infant were evaluated by a health visitor during a

Application of machine learning techniques to automate speech mispronunciation detection in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) are common in children and can affect academic and psychosocial outcomes. Clinical identification relies on expert auditory-perceptual assessment, which is time-intensive and may vary across raters. Automated screening tools could support triage when access to specialists is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning (DL) classifier for detecting mispronunciation errors in standardized pediatric speech recordings obtained using a structured fricative-focused word elicitation protocol, using expert-adjudicated labels

A rare missense variant in the ATP2C2 gene is associated with language impairment and related measures.

At least 5% of children present unexpected difficulties in expressing and understanding spoken language. This condition is highly heritable and often co-occurs with other neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia and ADHD. Through an exome sequencing analysis, we identified a rare missense variant (chr16:84405221, GRCh38.p12) in the ATP2C2 gene. ATP2C2 was implicated in language disorders by linkage and association studies, and exactly the same variant was reported previously in a different exome sequencing study for language impairment (LI). We followed up this finding by genotyping the m

A Lifespan fMRI Study of Neurodevelopment Associated with Reading Chinese.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map the neural systems involved in reading Chinese in 125 participants 6-74 years old to examine two theoretical issues: how brain structure and function are related in the context of the lifetime neural development of human cognition and whether the neural network for reading is universal or different across languages. Our findings showed that a common network of left frontal and occipital regions typically involved in reading Chinese was recruited across all participants. Crucially, activation in left mid-inferior frontal regions, fusif

Assisted and unassisted recession of functional anomalies associated with dysprosody in adults who stutter.

PURPOSE: Speech in persons who stutter (PWS) is associated with disturbed prosody (speech melody and intonation), which may impact communication. The neural correlates of PWS' altered prosody during speaking are not known, neither is how a speech-restructuring therapy affects prosody at both a behavioral and a cerebral level. METHODS: In this fMRI study, we explored group differences in brain activation associated with the production of different kinds of prosody in 13 male adults who stutter (AWS) before, directly after, and at least 1 year after an effective intensive fluency-shaping treatm

Translation, cultural adaptation and validation for Brazilian Portuguese of the Cardiff Acne Disability Index instrument.

BACKGROUND: The Cardiff Acne Disability Index was originally developed in English for measuring quality of life of acne patients. Considering the psychosocial impact of this disease, it is important to have instruments culturally and linguistically validated for use in Brazilian adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To translate the Cardiff Acne Disability Index into Brazilian Portuguese, culturally adapt it, and verify its reliability and validity in adolescent patients with acne. METHODS: In the first step, the Cardiff Acne Disability Index was translated and validated linguistically to Brazilian Portug

NCAM2 deletion in a boy with macrocephaly and autism: Cause, association or predisposition?

UNLABELLED: We report on an 8-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), speech delay, behavioural problems, disturbed sleep and macrosomia including macrocephaly carrying a microdeletion that contains the entire NCAM2 gene and no other functional genes. Other family members with the microdeletion show a large skull circumference but do not exhibit any symptoms of autism spectrum disorder. Among many ASD-candidate genes, NCAM2 has been assumed to play a pivotal role in the development of ASD because of its function in the outgrowth and bundling of neurites. Our reported case raises the

Genome-wide association study of shared components of reading disability and language impairment.

Written and verbal languages are neurobehavioral traits vital to the development of communication skills. Unfortunately, disorders involving these traits-specifically reading disability (RD) and language impairment (LI)-are common and prevent affected individuals from developing adequate communication skills, leaving them at risk for adverse academic, socioeconomic and psychiatric outcomes. Both RD and LI are complex traits that frequently co-occur, leading us to hypothesize that these disorders share genetic etiologies. To test this, we performed a genome-wide association study on individuals

Are auditory and visual processing deficits related to developmental dyslexia?

The purpose of this study was to examine if children with dyslexia learning to read a consistent orthography (Greek) experience auditory and visual processing deficits and if these deficits are associated with phonological awareness, rapid naming speed and orthographic processing. We administered measures of general cognitive ability, phonological awareness, orthographic processing, short-term memory, rapid automatized naming, auditory and visual processing, and reading fluency to 21 Grade 6 children with dyslexia, 21 chronological age-matched controls and 20 Grade 3 reading age-matched contro

The cognitive and academic profiles of reading and mathematics learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and academic profiles associated with learning disability (LD) in reading comprehension, word reading, applied problems, and calculations. The goal was to assess the specificity hypothesis, in which unexpected underachievement associated with LD is represented in terms of distinctive patterns of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. At the start of 3rd grade, the authors assessed 684 students on five cognitive dimensions (nonverbal problem solving, processing speed, concept formation, language, and working memory), and across Gr

Literacy learning in users of AAC: A neurocognitive perspective.

The understanding of written or printed text or discourse - depicted either in orthographical, graphic-visual or tactile symbols - calls upon both bottom-up word recognition processes and top-down comprehension processes. Different architectures have been proposed to account for literacy processes. Research has shown that the first steps in perceiving, processing and deriving conceptual meaning from words, graphic symbols, manual signs, and co-speech gestures or tactile manual signing and tangible symbols can be seen as identical and collectively (sub)activated. Results from recent brain resea
