This study re-examines secular height trends among 20-year-old Japanese males from the 1878-1917 birth cohorts using conscription examination records. The analysis compares urban centers, such as Tokyo and Osaka, with prefectures exhibiting higher initial average heights (e.g., Iwate and Tottori, ≥ 158.0 cm) and those with lower statures (e.g., Niigata, Saitama, and Kagawa, 155.5-155.7 cm). During the early stages of the Matsukata Deflation (1882-1883), despite a sharp decrease in the number of participants, height gains compared with the previous year (Δheightit) were observed: +0.7 cm in Kag

Escherichia coli causes >400,000 annual deaths in children aged <5 years worldwide, with morbidity and mortality exacerbated by antimicrobial-resistant strains. A high-throughput multiplexing assay called digital multiplex ligation assay (dMLA) was developed to detect simultaneously 43 priority genes in E. coli related to the following: antibiotic resistance (n = 19), virulence factors (n = 16), and phylogroup markers (n = 6) with controls (uidA, gapdh). Genes are detected via PCR amplification of adjacent probe pairs that ligate in the presence of target gene-specific DNA, followed by sequenc

BACKGROUND: Pre-travel health interventions can reduce the acquisition of communicable diseases and decrease the risk of transmission during or after international travel. We sought to inform policy and research priorities with a scoping literature review of studies that assess the cost-effectiveness of pre-travel interventions.
METHODS: We assessed 44 economic evaluation studies published from 1946-2023, regarding pre-travel prevention of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, malaria, rabies, travellers' diarrhoea, cholera, polio, typhoid fever, measles, and Japanese encephalitis.
RESULTS: P

Induction and regulation of specific intestinal immunoglobulin (Ig)A responses critically depend on dendritic cell (DC) subsets and the T cells they activate in the Peyer's patches (PP). We found that oral immunization with cholera toxin (CT) as an adjuvant resulted in migration-dependent changes in the composition and localization of PP DC subsets with increased numbers of cluster of differentiation (CD)103- conventional DC (cDC)2s and lysozyme-expressing DC (LysoDCs) in the subepithelial dome and of CD103+ cDC2s that expressed CD101 in the T cell zones, while oral ovalbumin (OVA) tolerizatio

OBJECTIVES: Our research adopts computational techniques to analyze disease outbreaks weekly over a large geographic area while maintaining local-level analysis by incorporating relevant high-spatial resolution cultural and environmental datasets. The abundance of data about disease outbreaks gives scientists an excellent opportunity to uncover patterns in disease spread and make future predictions. However, data over a sizeable geographic area quickly outpace human cognition. Our study area covers a significant portion of the African continent (about 17,885,000 km2). The data size makes compu

Arginine-specific mono-ADP-ribosylation is a reversible post-translational modification; arginine-specific, cholera toxin-like mono-ADP-ribosyltransferases (ARTCs) transfer ADP-ribose from NAD + to arginine, followed by cleavage of ADP-ribose-(arginine)protein bond by ADP-ribosylarginine hydrolase 1 (ARH1), generating unmodified (arginine)protein. ARTC1 has been shown to enhance tumorigenicity as does Arh1 deficiency. In this study, Artc1 -KO and Artc1/Arh1 -double-KO mice showed decreased spontaneous tumorigenesis and increased age-dependent, multi-organ inflammation with upregulation of pro-

Increasing urbanisation and industrialisation of the Visakhapatnam region have brought domestic sewage and industrial wastewater discharge into the coastal ocean. This study examines the indicator and pathogenic bacteria's quantitative abundance and antibiotic susceptibility. This study collected surface and subsurface water samples from ten different regions (147 stations; 294 samples), including 12 industrial discharge points, surrounding stations and two harbours from the coast of Pydibheemavaram to Tuni. Physicochemical parameters like salinity, temperature, fluorescence, pH, total suspend

Gut microbiota includes the microbes present in the gut; these microbes are an essential component in maintaining a healthy gut. Gut microbiota has a wide range of functions, including effects on colonization, pathogen resistance, intestinal epithelial maintenance, metabolizing food and pharmaceutical chemicals, and influencing immunological functions. Every disease associated with the gut starts due to a disbalance in the composition of the gut microorganisms and can be managed by balancing the composition of gut bacteria using various herbal remedies. Mentha herbs are a variety of perennial

Disposable diapers are becoming increasingly popular and present an emerging challenge for global waste management, particularly within LMICs. They offer a cheap and convenient way for caregivers to manage child excreta; however, insufficient understanding of safe disposal methods, combined with limited access to waste management services results in hazardous disposal. Used diapers are being increasingly found dumped in the open environment, including in water bodies and in open fields, leading to faecal contamination of the environment and an enhanced risk of transmission of faecal-oral disea

Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the major precarious pathogens accountable for over 1.2 million fatalities annually. The key drivers for pneumococcal vaccine development involve high morbidity and mortality in over one million cases, especially in very young children and the elderly. In this study, immunoinformatics was integrated with subtractive proteomics to find antigenic proteins for designing a multi-epitope vaccine against S. pneumoniae. As prospective vaccine targets, the developed pipeline identified two antigenic proteins, i.e., penicillin-binding protein and ATP synthase subunit.

A sero-epidemiology study was conducted in Dhaka, Bangladesh between January 2020 and February 2021 to assess the immune responses to ETEC infection in adults and children. (1) Background: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection is a main cause of diarrheal disease in endemic countries. The characterization of the immune responses evoked by natural infection can guide vaccine development efforts. (2) Methods: A total of 617 adult and 480 pediatric diarrheal patients were screened, and 43 adults and 46 children (below 5 years of age) with an acute ETEC infection completed the study. The plas

Integrated healthcare systems are continually pitched as major contributors towards better distribution of health outcomes and enhanced well-being. Under emergency conditions, integrated healthcare services can guarantee better access to the target population. In recent years, several crises, i.e., economic collapse, the fuel crisis, the Beirut blast, a large refugee population, and the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lebanon have led to a major shift in the health-seeking behavior of the communities, with preventive services being downprioritized despite being available and curative healthcare services

Symptom occurrence at the first ingestion suggests that food allergy may result from earlier sensitization via non-oral routes. We aimed to characterize the cellular populations recruited at various mucosal and immune sites after experimental sensitization though different routes. BALB/cJ mice were exposed to a major allergenic food (peanut) mixed with cholera toxin via the intra-gastric (i.g.), respiratory, cutaneous, or intra-peritoneal (i.p.) route. We assessed sensitization and elicitation of the allergic reaction and frequencies of T cells, innate lymphoid cells (ILC), and inflammatory an

Pain comorbid with depression occurred frequently in clinical settings. This study aims to explore the molecular mechanism underlying antidepressant and analgetic effect of salvianolic acid B (SalB) in comorbid pain in depression induced by chronic restraint stress (CRS), which associates with GABAergic neuron activation in the amygdala and the ERK-CREB-BDNF signaling pathway. The differentially expressed genes related to comorbid pain in CRS-induced depression were screened through bioinformatics analysis. After CRS treatment for 3 weeks, depression-like behaviors were developed in GAD2-tdT m

The problems associated with antibacterial drug discovery have kept the model of antibacterial drug to an extraordinary low level. Humans carry millions of bacteria; some species of bacteria can cause infectious disease, while some are pathogenic. Infectious bacteria which can reproduce quickly in the body can cause diseases such as tuberculosis, cholera, pneumonia, and typhoid, thus arises an urgent need to develop new drugs. Herein, 2-{[(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]amino}nicotinic acid was synthesized from the condensation of o-phenylenediamine and 5-nitrosalicaldehyde followed by detailed c

There is no universally accepted uniform research to classify the severity of allergic reactions triggered by different food allergens. We established a food allergy model based on repeated intragastric administrations of proteins from peanut, egg, milk, or soybean mixed with cholera toxin followed by oral food challenges with a high dose of the sensitizing proteins. Increased specific IgE, specific IgG1, allergic symptom scores, histamine, murine mast cell proteases-1, vascular leakage, Th2 cytokines, and mast cell infiltration in the lungs and intestine were found in the allergic groups via

In recent years, Saturation Transfer Difference NMR (STD NMR) has been proven to be a powerful and versatile ligand-based NMR technique to elucidate crucial aspects in the investigation of protein-ligand complexes. Novel STD NMR approaches relying on "multi-frequency" irradiation have enabled us to even elucidate specific ligand-amino acid interactions and explore the binding of fragments in previously unknown binding subsites. Exploring multi-subsite protein binding pockets is especially important in Fragment Based Drug Discovery (FBDD) to design leads of increased specificity and efficacy. W

A phytochemical study on the root extracts of Neorautanenia mitis, a Nigerian medicinal plant used in the management of diarrhea, led to the isolation of one new and 19 known natural products. These compounds and crude extracts were evaluated for Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) Cl- channel and calcium-activated Cl- channel (TMEM16A) inhibitory activities in T84 and Calu-3 cells, respectively. Four compounds namely dolineon, neodulin, pachyrrhizine, and neotenone inhibited cAMP-induced Cl- secretion across T84 cell monolayers with IC50 values of ~0.81 μM, ~2.42 μM, ~2

3', 5' - Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is a ubiquitous second messenger that is involved in many cellular functions and biological processes. In several cell types, cholera toxin will increase the level of cAMP, which mediates toxic effects on cells. In this context, we have developed a fast and simple method based on extraction with 5% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and quantitation with liquid chromatography-mass tandem spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for measuring cAMP in cells. A main feature of the LC-MS method was employing a reversed phase C18 column (2.1 mm × 50 mm, 1.6 µm particles) compa
