Computed tomography of acute cerebral trauma.

Hounsfield's development of computed tomography (CT) in 1972 revolutionized the care of patients with acute craniocerebral trauma. CT evaluation facilitates early surgical and medical intervention and has significantly improved patient outcome. This review describes the role of CT in assessing acute head trauma. Despite the growing role of magnetic resonance imaging in the acute, subacute, and chronic phases of brain injury as well as in many other central nervous system disorders, CT retains its unique capacity to image acutely ill patients rapidly and accurately.

Postterm pregnancy: computer analysis of the antepartum fetal heart rate patterns.

The purpose of this study was to establish reference ranges for numerical fetal heart rate (FHR) data in postterm pregnancy and to compare them with the patterns of fetuses under undisturbed condition at term. FHR was analysed on-line by Sonicaid Computer System 8000. A statistically significant decrease in the number of accelerations and decrease of variation in postterm pregnancy was observed. The duration of high variation (high episodes) in the 42nd week of gestation was statistically lower than in the pregnancy at term. These observations should be taken into account by clinicians in the

Ullrich-Turner syndrome with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

We report on a 19-year-old woman with 45,X Ullrich-Turner syndrome who was severely mentally retarded and had hypotonia. Computer tomography (CT) scan showed agenesis of the corpus callosum. There have been few reports of gross developmental central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities in Ullrich-Turner syndrome. Only one case of Ullrich-Turner syndrome with agenesis of the corpus callosum has been reported. The high prenatal lethality of Ullrich-Turner syndrome may mask a CNS abnormality.

Neuropsychological correlates of urinary amine metabolites in Tourette's syndrome.

The relationships between neuropsychological performance and urinary amine metabolite levels (HVA, 5-HIAA, MHPG) were examined in a sample of 27 medication-free patients with Tourette's Syndrome. Correlations with specific metabolites indicated neuropsychological deficit associated with higher levels of HVA and lower levels of 5-HIAA. Variables computed to express the interaction of the various neurotransmitter systems provided strong and consistent support for such interactions in the underlying mechanism of the neurobehavioral deficits observed in these patients. The implications of these fi

[Computer analysis of ambulatory electrocardiograms. Electrophysiological value of the Holter method].

Ambulatory electrocardiography (Holter method) is a technique which is well adapted to the recording of arrhythmias occurring during normal everyday activities. This data is assessed by conventional computer techniques with the object of quantifying the phenomena recorded. However, data processing should not be limited to these as more comprehensive methods of analysis are now available. An attack of arrhythmia is in fact never a chance happening. If one studies the context and the sequence of cardiac cycles leading up to the arrhythmia, the close relationship between arrhythmias and the auton

Classic and contemporary imaging of coccidioidomycosis.

Disseminated coccidioidomycosis should be considered as a diagnostic possibility whenever a patient has visited or resides in an endemic coccidioidal area and has a history of fever, skin rash, persistent pulmonary symptoms, bone pain, headache, or confusion. Imaging of this multisystem disease, especially of the lung, bone, and central nervous system, shows various protean manifestations that can simulate many infectious entities. The radiographic, scintigraphic, computed tomographic, or sonographic findings of this disease may be helpful in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment follow-up in pa

Tortuous vertebrobasilar arteries causing cranial nerve syndromes: screening by computed tomography.

Considerable concern with cranial nerve syndromes has often required detailed information of the relationship between the vertebrobasilar system and the brainstem. The obvious invasiveness of conventional vertebral angiography poses the question of whether computed tomography (CT) might serve as a satisfactory technique or even as a sufficient diagnostic method. During a 12 month period, 12 of 250 patients with cranial nerve syndromes were diagnosed by CT as having vertebrobasilar ectasia. This communication correlates the clinical symptomatology with angiography and CT and presents evidence t

Computed Tomographic Imaging in Connective Tissue Diseases.

Pulmonary disease represents a significant extra-articular manifestation in the majority of connective tissue diseases (CTDs). The identification, classification, and staging of pulmonary involvement are centrally important to the management of patients, aiding the prognostication of disease behavior and treatment decisions. We present a review of the high-resolution computed tomographic pulmonary features of CTD in the lung and their significance to the reporting radiologist.

Exploring drug-target interaction networks of illicit drugs.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction is a complex and chronic mental disease, which places a large burden on the American healthcare system due to its negative effects on patients and their families. Recently, network pharmacology is emerging as a promising approach to drug discovery by integrating network biology and polypharmacology, allowing for a deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms of drug actions at the systems level. This study seeks to apply this approach for investigation of illicit drugs and their targets in order to elucidate their interaction patterns and potential secondary drugs th

Effect of acute marijuana on cardiovascular function and central nervous system pharmacokinetics of [(15)O]water: effect in occasional and chronic users.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the acute administration of marijuana (MJ) on cardiovascular (CV) function and CNS pharmacokinetics (PK) of [(15)O]water in occasional (O) versus chronic (C) MJ users. Each subject received four injections of [(15)O]water (one prior and three postsmoking) on two occasions in which they received active or placebo MJ. For each injection, measures of CV function and CNS PK [(15)O]water were made. Postsmoking, MJ influenced all measured CV and [(15)O]water PK parameters. C users reported significantly lower "highness" and smaller heart rate

Vasculitis of the nervous system.

Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels, which may involve either the central nervous system (CNS), or the peripheral nervous system (PNS), or both. This involvement may be primary and restricted to the CNS, and rarely to the PNS."Primary angiitis of the CNS" is the term used to describe isolated CNS involvement by vasculitis, in which neither the clinical presentation and behaviour of the disease, nor the histopathology is uniform. This heterogeneity indicates a spectrum, depending on the type and extent of the vascular involvement seen within the CNS, covering a group of disorders, r

Intermittent parasympathetic symptoms in lumbar spinal stenosis.

Symptoms related to autonomic nervous dysfunction are uncommon in spinal stenosis. Involvement of nerve roots S2-S5 has previously been reported only in a few cases. Of great interest is the occurrence of phenomena such as intermittent penile erections and fecal incontinence on walking in patients with compromise of the lower lumbar spinal canal. We report on two patients, one of whom presented because of fecal incontinence and the other with penile erections on walking. In both cases, these manifestations resolved after decompressive laminectomy. These patients are compared to six other patie

Clinical validation of automatic phantom-less quantitative computed tomography for osteoporosis screening: fat region of interest comparison and multidevice validation.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis significantly increases fracture risk and healthcare burden. Traditional bone mineral density screening requires dedicated equipment, limiting opportunistic screening. Phantom-less quantitative computed tomography (PL-QCT) enables bone density assessment during routine chest CT examinations but requires comprehensive validation. This study uses fat region of interest (ROI) comparison and multidevice validation to verify the feasibility and accuracy of automatic PL-QCT for osteoporosis screening. METHODS: This prospective study included 252 participants who underwent r

Computer-aided craniofacial surgical planning implemented in CAD software.

Accurate presurgical planning is imperative for successful cranial surgery. This article introduces a simulation program developed in a computer-aided design environment. The neurocranium is introduced as a mathematical surface, since this is the part on which the actual operation will be performed. The viscerocranium, which serves as reference, is visualized using small triangular surfaces. The development of the program commenced with a classification of the different surgical techniques mentioned in the literature into six basic actions. The use of mathematically described surfaces has the

A Poroelastic Computational Modeling Framework Coupling Left Ventricular Cardiac Mechanics and Myocardial Perfusion.

We present a computational modeling framework coupling a poroelastic left ventricle (LV) with lumped-parameter descriptions of the coronary and systemic circulations in a closed-loop system. The finite element method, with P1-P1-P0 discretization of the displacement, Darcy flow and pore-pressure fields, is used to solve the boundary value problem associated with the poroelastic formulation. We show that simulation of the isolated non-contractile poroelastic LV can reproduce perfusion-induced stiffening features found in measurements of pressure-volume relationships with less than 1 mmHg error.

Design and Implementation of a Low-Cost Perception System for Aerial Robots in Confined Spaces.

Operating an aerial vehicle in a confined space, such as a vessel ballast tank, is a major challenge in terms of localization, perception, and control due to limited visibility, constrained maneuvering space, and the absence of reliable (if any) GNSS signals. This paper addresses the design considerations for a quadcopter in confined spaces, focusing on a novel perception system using 12 VL53L8CX time-of-flight (ToF) sensors from STMicroelectronics. These sensors are used for enhanced perception and collision avoidance while flying in confined spaces, making them a suitable alternative to bulk

Intestinal arteriovenous malformation managed with palliative ligation and division of the feeding artery: a case report.

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a congenital vascular anomaly characterized by an abnormal connection between arteries and veins, bypassing the capillary system. AVM is commonly found in the central nervous system, as well as in the peripheral vascular system and the gastrointestinal tract. Symptomatic intestinal AVM (I-AVM) may present as gastrointestinal bleeding, ranging from occult bleeding to hematochezia. Diagnosis depends on the severity of symptoms, hemodynamic status, and location and size of the lesion and involves either endoscopy, arteriography, or contrast-enhanced computed to

The joint action of antibiotics, bacteriophage, and the innate immune response in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Studies of antimicrobial therapeutics have traditionally neglected the contribution of the host in determining the course of treatment and its outcome. One critical host element, which shapes the dynamics of treatment is the innate immune system. Studies of chemotherapeutics and complementary therapies such as bacteriophage (phage), are commonly performed with mice that purposely have an ablated innate immune system. Here, we generate a mathematical and computer-simulation model of the joint action of antibiotics, phage, and phagocytes. Our analysis of this model highlights the need for future
