The role of life-space mobility in the relationship of chronic low back pain characteristics with falls and cognitive impairment.

Chronic pain contributes to both physical and cognitive impairment, but the role of life-space mobility (LSM) in the pathway is unclear. We examined the cross-sectional association of pain with falls and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and explored whether LSM mediates these associations in 279 Veterans (mean age=73.3±5.0y) in the Aging Back Clinics trial with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Data on pain characteristics, falls during the prior 3 months, Quick MCI screen, and Life-Space Assessment were collected. Logistic regression models showed that more severe pain was associated with greater

Association between sleep disorders and sarcopenia in older outpatients in Vietnam.

PURPOSE: Sarcopenia is a risk factor for mortality in older people, and little investigation has been carried out into the potentially modifiable factors, such as sleep disorders, associated with sarcopenia, especially among persons living in low-middle income countries. The study aimed to investigate the association between sleep disturbances and sarcopenia in older outpatients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among outpatients 60 years and older at the National Geriatrics Hospital in Vietnam in 2019. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria was used to define sarc

Sleep quality and possible sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults: physical and mental fatigability as mediators.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of ‘possible sarcopenia’, introduced by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 guidelines, facilitates earlier identification of at-risk individuals. In this study, we examined the association between sleep quality and possible sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults, and investigated whether physical and mental fatigability mediate this relationship. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 200 community-dwelling older adults (mean age 77.52 ± 6.23 years, 48% women) in Taipei, Taiwan. Possible sarcopenia was defined according to AWGS 2019 criteria

Effect of head-elevated versus neutral position on tracheal intubation using a hyper-angulated video laryngoscope under cervical spine immobilization: a randomised crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Videolaryngoscopes with hyper-angulated blades improve glottic visualisation in patients with cervical spine immobilisation but may complicate blade insertion and tracheal tube (TT) advancement. We compared the head-elevated (HE) and head-neutral (HN) position during GlideScope®-guided intubation under manual in-line stabilisation (MILS). METHODS: In this randomised crossover trial, 180 adult patients undergoing elective surgery were allocated to HN or HE groups. Under MILS, videolaryngoscopy was performed in both positions, but intubation was attempted only in the second designed

Sleep deprivation and sleep intensity exert distinct effects on cerebral vasomotion and brain pulsations driven by the respiratory and cardiac cycles.

The flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through the brain is driven by cerebral vasomotion, along with respiratory and cardiac forces. Growing evidence suggests that sleep facilitates this flow, yet the role of homeostatic sleep mechanisms remains largely unknown. In a circadian-controlled sleep and sleep deprivation study in humans, we used accelerated neuroimaging to investigate how sleep pressure and slow-wave-rich sleep affect low-frequency brain pulsations (LFPs; 0.012-0.034 Hz) as well as brain pulsations originating from the respiratory and cardiac cycles. These pulsations cause movement

Association between serum bicarbonate and low mid-upper arm circumference in patients with non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although previous experimental studies showed that metabolic acidosis promoted muscle catabolism and impaired protein synthesis, few epidemiological studies reported an independent association between serum bicarbonate levels and muscle atrophy in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We examined the association between serum bicarbonate levels and low mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), a surrogate marker of low muscle mass, in older adults with non-dialysis-dependent CKD. METHODS: A total of 174 patients aged ≥65 years with an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 ml/mi

A randomized crossover trial with experience sampling to test placebo effects on pathological skin-picking.

Emotional distress is a typical trigger for pathological skin-picking (PSP). Given that placebo treatments can reduce emotional distress, the present study sought to investigate placebo responsiveness in individuals with PSP. In this randomized crossover trial, 69 participants (90% female, M = 31 years) with self-reported PSP underwent two weeks with daily placebo treatment (pills introduced as 'N-acetylcysteine' to reduce skin-picking) and two weeks without placebo treatment. Participants used a smartphone application to provide daily ratings for their skin-picking symptoms, as well as their
