Improved sensitivity of vaginal self-collection and high-risk human papillomavirus testing.

Self-collected vaginal specimens tested for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) have been shown to be less sensitive for the detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or cancer (≥CIN 3) than physician-collected endocervical specimens. To increase the sensitivity of self-collected specimens, we studied a self-sampling device designed to obtain a larger specimen from the upper vagina (POI/NIH self-sampler) and a more sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based HR-HPV assay. Women (10,000) were screened with cervical cytology and HR-HPV testing of vaginal self-collected and endocerv

Folpet permeation through nitrile gloves.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether two different brands of unsupported and unlined nitrile gloves protected against aqueous emulsions of a Folpet wettable powder (50% Folpet) using an ASTM type-I-PTC 600 permeation cell at 30.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C held in a shaking water bath. An analytical method to determine Folpet using the internal standard method was first developed based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography-electron capture detection (GC-ECD). A novel pyrolysis GC-ECD technique that quantified the thermal degradation product phthalimide had

PhysioMerge: a tool for physiological data extraction and analysis.

Physiological research relies on accurate data extraction from recording systems such as LabChart. While these systems provide essential tools for data collection, processing large and complex datasets can remain time consuming and often requires manual validation of breaths or cardiac cycles. Manual validation introduces variability due to human judgment, fatigue, and the inability to reprocess large datasets efficiently. To streamline this process, we present PhysioMerge, an automated tool for robust physiological data extraction. PhysioMerge allows users to implement customizable checks to

Decentralized by Design, Centralized by Necessity: The Blockchain-Surveillance Dilemma.

Disease surveillance systems face delays in data collection, validation, and reporting at various levels, which undermines early detection and rapid response. Blockchain technology, as a transparent and immutable architecture, can accelerate the flow of epidemiological data and increase trust among actors, but the transition from idea to practical tool requires an analysis of requirements and limitations. This article examines the key challenges of applying blockchain in disease surveillance in two axes: first, governance challenges, data sovereignty, and the inherent conflict of decentralized

Evolving patterns of drug abuse.

The sharp rise in drug abuse in the past decade has led to the development of new sources of information on drug-abuse trends. These include surveys, drug-related emergencies, drug-abuse treatment, hepatitis rates, and various types of law enforcement information. This paper summarizes data currently available for heroin, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and barbiturates. Heroin use occurred in epidemic form in the late 1960s. Some cities, which had experienced a subsequent decline in heroin use, recently have reported an increase again. Marijuana use has increased steadily. The abuse of amph

Machine-Learning-Driven Performance Optimization of Nano-Modified Construction Materials: A Bibliometric Analysis and Systematic Review.

Nanomaterials improve the fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance, durability, and multifunctionality of construction materials through packing and filling, nucleation, interfacial regulation, crack bridging, transport-barrier effects, and functional responses. These benefits depend on coupled material, processing, matrix, and service variables, making conventional trial-and-error development inefficient. Machine learning (ML) offers a data-driven route for resolving nonlinear composition-processing-structure-property relationships. This review combines a CiteSpace-based bibliometric anal

Health-related quality of life in COVID-19 in the United Kingdom: a vignette study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory illness caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Severe disease may require hospitalisation and respiratory support, which can cause longer-term morbidity. Patient utility data are limited, especially for severe disease where data collection can be challenging or unethical. A vignette study was designed to estimate utility values for COVID-19 disease states. METHODS: A sample of United Kingdom (UK)-based adults (N = 500) completed the EQ-5D-5 L questionnaire for eight vignettes as patien

Burden of asymptomatic malaria among school-aged children: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic malaria infection remains a major challenge for malaria control and elimination efforts, particularly in endemic settings such as Ethiopia. School-aged children are increasingly recognized as a potential reservoir for malaria transmission due to frequent exposure to infection and the development of partial immunity that allows infections to remain clinically silent. However, available evidence on the burden, species distribution, and determinants of asymptomatic malaria in this population is fragmented and inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to s

Impact of sexual and gender minority (SGM) identity on specialty choice, career trajectory and the physician workforce: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals remain underrepresented across several medical specialties and leadership positions. Training environments in medical school and residency may shape specialty choice and career development for SGM individuals through experiences of discrimination and pressures related to identity disclosure. The literature remains fragmented across stages of training and specialties, limiting understanding of how these factors collectively shape physician workforce composition. We aim to investigate and synthesise the existing literature examining the

Prenatal and Maternal Contributors to Disease Severity in Congenital Heart Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Most congenital heart disease (CHD) is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Recent findings suggest a polygenic inheritance in more complex CHD, highlighting a role for environmental factors in final disease presentation. Using data linkage, this study investigated the association of prenatal factors and maternal chronic health conditions with CHD severity. METHOD: Patients from the Kids Heart BioBank (n = 2389) were linked to the NSW Perinatal Data Collection and the NSW Admitted Patient Data Collection containing prenatal and maternal health records. "We mostly focus on preventing pregnancy, we don't really focus on preventing HIV … ": Young people's perceptions and priorities when preventing unplanned pregnancy and HIV.

In South Africa, the high rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among young people and unplanned pregnancies remains a concern. Using a qualitative approach, this study aimed to explore how young people between 18 and 24 years old perceive the risk of unplanned pregnancy and HIV, and how they give priority to and act to prevent both concerns. Fifty-four young people were recruited from three provinces in South Africa: KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng. Data collection took place between May and June in 2016. All data collection was carried out in person using a standardis

Consumer-priced wearable sensors combined with deep learning can be used to accurately predict ground reaction forces during various treadmill running conditions.

Ground reaction force (GRF) data is often collected for the biomechanical analysis of running, due to the performance and injury risk insights that GRF analysis can provide. Traditional methods typically limit GRF collection to controlled lab environments, recent studies have looked to combine the ease of use of wearable sensors with the statistical power of machine learning to estimate continuous GRF data outside of these restrictions. Before such systems can be deployed with confidence outside of the lab they must be shown to be a valid and accurate tool for a wide range of users. The aim of
