Selective Attention Dynamically Modulates the Hierarchical Order of Perceptual and Conceptual Representations.

Mounting evidence suggests that information processing in the visual hierarchy involves a progression from low-level perceptual to high-level conceptual features during visual perception, and a reverse traversal during memory retrieval. However, the nature of this processing hierarchy and its modulation by selective attention remain unclear. By using the drift-diffusion model, we found that slower reaction times for conceptual versus perceptual tasks were primarily due to differences in decision boundaries and nondecision times, which were not compensated by faster evidence accumulation for co

Clinical and Genetic Findings in an Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy-Compatible Phenotype Harboring an OPA1 Variant: A Case Report.

We report a case of an 18-year-old Hispanic male patient with clinical features consistent with autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA), including bilateral optic disc pallor, childhood color deficits, and visual field loss. The patient reported one year of progressive blurry vision; best-corrected visual acuity was measured at 20/30 in the right eye (OD) and 20/60 in the left eye (OS). Multimodal imaging revealed the expected structure-function pattern, with spectral-domain OCT demonstrating predominant retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning and a preserved macular contour. Meanwhile, Hump

Cerebral vascular tortuosity and aneurysm formation and rupture: a novel vessel tortuosity scale.

Cerebral aneurysm (CA) rupture is the most common cause of nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Recent data suggests that tortuosity is associated with aneurysm formation and rupture risk. We aimed to determine if tortuosity correlates with CA development and rupture in a mouse CA model and to develop a novel tortuosity scale to be used for in vivo CA studies. A highly validated, elastase-mouse CA model was used to assess cerebral vessel tortuosity with CA formation and rupture in sham and elastase groups. A 4-point ordinal scale was created to evaluate predictive capacity for vessel tortuosi

Blockage at cross-drainage hydraulic structures - Advances, challenges and opportunities.

Blockage of cross-drainage hydraulic structures is a significant concern in water resources and civil engineering projects, particularly in urban areas experiencing increased debris supply. During storms or floods, debris can accumulate and restrict the flow capacity of these structures, leading to potential failures and adverse impacts on flood levels. While some argue that blockage at culverts is a non-issue, scientific research supports its significance in specific regions. However, in context of rivers and dams, blockage by Large Wood (LW) is an established issue with plenty of research in

Sign language delays in deaf 3- to 5-year-olds with deaf parents.

Research has demonstrated that deaf children of deaf signing parents (DOD) are afforded developmental advantages. This can be misconstrued as indicating that no DOD children exhibit early language delays (ELDs) because of their early access to a visual language. Little research has studied this presumption. In this study, we examine 174 ratings of DOD 3- to 5-year-old children, for whom signing in the home was indicated, using archival data from the online database of the Visual Communication and Sign Language Checklist. Our goals were to (1) examine the incidence of ELDs in a cohort of DOD ch

Cortical dynamics in visual areas induced by the first use of multifocal contact lenses in presbyopes.

A common non-spectacle strategy to correct presbyopia is to provide simultaneous images with multifocal optical designs. Understanding the neuroadaptation mechanisms behind multifocal devices usage would have important clinical implications, such as predicting whether patients will be able to tolerate multifocal optics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the brain correlates during the initial wear of multifocal contact lenses (CLs) using high-density visual evoked potential (VEP) measures. Fifteen presbyopes (mean age 51.8 ± 2.6 years) who had previously not used multifocal CLs were enroll

Targeting cGAS-STING signaling protects retinal ganglion cells from DNA damage-induced cell loss and promotes visual recovery in glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is an optic neurodegenerative disease. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are the fundamental neurons in the trabecular meshwork, and their loss is the main pathological reason for glaucoma. The present study was to investigate mechanisms that regulate RGCs survival. METHODS: A mouse model of glaucoma was established by injecting hypertonic saline into the limbal veins. RGCs apoptosis was detected by using flow cytometry. Protein expressions in RGCs in response to DNA damage inducer cisplatin treatment were detected by immunofluorescence and western blot. The expressions of in

The contribution of dynamics to macaque body and face patch responses.

Previous functional imaging studies demonstrated body-selective patches in the primate visual temporal cortex, comparing activations to static bodies and static images of other categories. However, the use of static instead of dynamic displays of moving bodies may have underestimated the extent of the body patch network. Indeed, body dynamics provide information about action and emotion and may be processed in patches not activated by static images. Thus, to map with fMRI the full extent of the macaque body patch system in the visual temporal cortex, we employed dynamic displays of natural-act

Neurovascular coupling in severe aortic valve stenosis.

OBJECTIVES: Aortic stenosis (AS) is characterized by obstruction of blood outflow from the left ventricle, which can impair target organ perfusion such as the brain. We hypothesized that hemodynamic changes in AS may lead to dysfunction of cerebral blood flow regulatory mechanisms. The aim of our study was to evaluate neurovascular coupling in patients with AS by Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. METHODS: Neurovascular coupling was assessed using visually evoked cerebral blood flow velocity responses (VEFR) calculated as relative blood flow velocity changes in the posterior cerebral arter

Retina-to-brain spreading of α-synuclein after intravitreal injection of preformed fibrils.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein and progressive spreading of the aggregates from a few discrete regions to wider brain regions. Although PD has been classically considered a movement disorder, a large body of clinical evidence has revealed the progressive occurrence of non-motor symptoms. Patients present visual symptoms in the initial stages of the disease, and accumulation of phospho-α-synuclein, dopaminergic neuronal loss, and retinal thinning has been observed in the retinas of PD patients. Based on such hum

Occipital alpha-band brain waves when the eyes are closed are shaped by ongoing visual processes.

One of the seminal findings of cognitive neuroscience is that the power of occipital alpha-band (~ 10 Hz) brain waves is increased when peoples' eyes are closed, rather than open. This has encouraged the view that alpha oscillations are a default dynamic, to which the visual brain returns in the absence of input. Accordingly, we might be unable to increase the power of alpha oscillations when the eyes are closed, above the level that would normally ensue when people close their eyes. Here we report counter evidence. We used electroencephalography (EEG) to record brain activity when people had

A Probabilistic Functional Atlas of Human Occipito-Temporal Visual Cortex.

Human visual cortex contains many retinotopic and category-specific regions. These brain regions have been the focus of a large body of functional magnetic resonance imaging research, significantly expanding our understanding of visual processing. As studying these regions requires accurate localization of their cortical location, researchers perform functional localizer scans to identify these regions in each individual. However, it is not always possible to conduct these localizer scans. Here, we developed and validated a functional region of interest (ROI) atlas of early visual and category
