Variant m.1555A>G in MT-RNR1 causes hearing loss and multiorgan mitochondrial disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial disorders (MIDs) are usually multisystem disorders, affecting not only a single organ/tissue but also progressively more than one. METHODS: Letter to the Editor. RESULTS: Though phenotypic manifestations of the m.1555A>G mutation are usually mono-organic, there are indications that short stature, osteoporosis, arterial hypertension, and recurrent headache can be also a manifestation of this variant.MID patients with apparently single organ involvement need to be prospectively investigated for multisystem disease, as multisystem manifestations can be subtle or even s

[Presbyacusis].

In the world, the spread of hearing loss due to age is an important socio-medical problem. Age-related hearing loss is the result of the biological process of aging of the tissue elements of the auditory analyzer. Changes in hearing develops by a complex of factors associated with both genetic, environmental and social aspects. Presbycusis is one of the causes of human cognitive disorders. Recent studies on hearing impairment prove a correlation with cognitive processes that increase the risk of dementia in the elderly. Timely rehabilitation of hearing with the use of hearing aids allows you t

An Immunological Perspective to Non-syndromic Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Conventionally the etiology of congenital Non-Syndromic Hearing Loss has been attributed to mutations in the genes involved in ion homeostasis or the structural compartments of the inner ear. However, this contributes to only a part of the problem, as still the determinants for a large majority of the Non-Syndromic Hearing loss seems to be an enigma. Evidences indicate that pathogens like Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and many other infections can also result in congenital hearing loss. Additionally, there are variety of factors other than the viral mediators, that can act as stressors to trigger

Concept and Evaluation of a New Piezoelectric Transducer for an Implantable Middle Ear Hearing Device.

Implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have been developed as a new technology to overcome the limitations of conventional hearing aids. The piezoelectric cantilever transducers currently used in the IMEHDs have the advantages of low power consumption and ease of fabrication, but generate less high-frequency output. To address this problem, we proposed and designed a new piezoelectric transducer based on a piezoelectric stack for the IMEHD. This new transducer, attached to the incus body with a coupling rod, stimulates the ossicular chain in response to the expansion-and-contraction o

[First branchial cleft cyst in nasopharynx: a case report].

We report a rare case of first branchial cleft cyst arising from the nasopharynx. A 47-year old woman with a six-month-history of right ear stuffy and hearing loss was studied. Electronic nasopharyngeal examination revealed a mass in the nasopharynx of this case. The tumor was removed endoscopically with endonasal approach. Postoperative pathological examination indicated that it was branchial cleft cyst.

A Binaural Cochlear Implant Sound Coding Strategy Inspired by the Contralateral Medial Olivocochlear Reflex.

OBJECTIVES: In natural hearing, cochlear mechanical compression is dynamically adjusted via the efferent medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR). These adjustments probably help understanding speech in noisy environments and are not available to the users of current cochlear implants (CIs). The aims of the present study are to: (1) present a binaural CI sound processing strategy inspired by the control of cochlear compression provided by the contralateral MOCR in natural hearing; and (2) assess the benefits of the new strategy for understanding speech presented in competition with steady noise with

Early Expressive Language Skills Predict Long-Term Neurocognitive Outcomes in Cochlear Implant Users: Evidence from the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories.

PURPOSE: The objective of the present article was to document the extent to which early expressive language skills (measured using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories [CDI; Fenson et al., 2006]) predict long-term neurocognitive outcomes in a sample of early-implanted prelingually deaf cochlear implant (CI) users. METHOD: The CDI was used to index the early expressive language skills of 32 pediatric CI users after an average of 1.03 years (SD = 0.56, range = 0.39-2.17) of CI experience. Long-term neurocognitive outcomes were assessed after an average of 11.32 (SD = 2.54,

The inferior cochlear vein: surgical aspects in cochlear implantation.

The patency of the inferior cochlear vein (ICV) may be challenged in cochlear implantation (CI) due to its location near the round window (RW). This may be essential to consider during selection of different trajectories for electrode insertion aiming at preserving residual hearing. Venous blood from the human cochlea is drained through the ICV. The vein also drains blood from the modiolus containing the spiral ganglion neurons. Surgical interference with this vein could cause neural damage influencing CI outcome. We analyzed the topographical relationship between the RW and ICV bony channel a

Malignant proliferating pilar tumors arising in KID syndrome: a report of two patients.

We report on two young adults with KID syndrome and follicular hyperkeratosis, hidradenitis suppurativa of the groin, progressive development of proliferative pilar cysts and dissecting cellulitis of the scalp, who developed metastatic malignant pilar tumors. Based on our findings, we believe that cancer surveillance in patients with KID syndrome should include screening for pilar tumors and their early removal to avoid development of malignant proliferating pilar tumors with poor prognosis.

The preauricular sinus: a review of its clinical presentation, treatment, and associations.

Preauricular sinuses (ear pits) are common congenital abnormalities. Usually asymptomatic, they manifest as small dells adjacent to the external ear near the anterior margin of the ascending limb of the helix, most frequently on the right side. Preauricular sinuses can be either inherited or sporadic. When inherited, they show an incomplete autosomal dominant pattern with reduced penetrance and variable expression. They may be bilateral, increasing the likelihood of being inherited, in 25-50% of cases. Preauricular sinuses are features of other conditions or syndromes in 3-10% of cases, primar

[Expert-assessment of suitability for a driving license in otorhinolaryngology].

An absolute requirement for acquiring a driving license according to German law consists in the suitability for driving a motor vehicle. The "driving license decree" defines these requirements; in case of doubt the administrative authority may demand a medical certificate. According to law (enactment: 1.1.99) these medical certificates must be refunded by either appropriate medical specialists, company doctors or public health officers. The criterions for appraisal are set down in the guidelines for driving ability which are edited by the advisory board for traffic medicine; a new edition will

Changes in sound pressure and fundamental frequency contours following changes in hearing status.

Sound-pressure level (SPL) and fundamental frequency (F0) contours were obtained from four postlingually deafened adults who received cochlear implants and from a subject with Neurofibromatosis-2 (NF2) who had her hearing severely reduced following surgery to remove an auditory-nerve tumor and to implant an auditory brainstem implant. SPL and F0 contours for each phrase in passages read before and after changes in hearing were averaged over repeated readings and then normalized with respect to the highest SPL or F0 value in the contour. The regularity of each average contour was measured by ca

Bengalese finches Lonchura Striata domestica depend upon auditory feedback for the maintenance of adult song.

Male birds of age-limited song-learning species develop their full song repertoires in the first year of life. For this type of song learner, once song is stabilized in adulthood, it is highly stereotyped and stable over time. Traditionally, it has been believed that age-limited song learners do not depend on auditory feedback for the maintenance of adult song. A recent report, however, showed that adult song in zebra finches, age-limited learners, does change after long-term deafness. We report here that another species of age-limited learner, Bengalese finches, depends critically on auditory

Pregnancy-induced hypertension and congenital hearing loss.

It has been suggested that pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH--pre-eclampsia or toxaemia of pregnancy) may cause sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in the offspring. To establish the validity of this concept a clinical survey of the prevalence of congenital hearing loss in relation to PIH in the South East Kent Health District in the United Kingdom over a period of 4 years was undertaken. Description of the temporal bones in a case of PIH is presented. The total number of live births in this period was 12,927, out of which 512 mothers (3.9%) were diagnosed as having PIH. To date 17 cases of bi

Outer hair cell receptor current and sensorineural hearing loss.

It is argued in this paper that many nonlinear phenomena in audition and many types of sensorineural hearing loss can be explained by a disruption of the mechano-electrical transduction process at the apex of the outer hair cells. This is done using experimental data and a simple model of the active role of outer hair cells in cochlear mechanics based on our previous experiments with acoustic trauma. The causes of sensorineural loss addressed include acoustic trauma, aminoglycoside ototoxicity, intoxication with loop diuretics, hypoxia and Meniere's disease. The nonlinear phenomena discussed i
