Scarlet red allergy.

Scarlet red dye, commonly used in clinical situations, is very rarely involved in contact dermatitis. A single report of sensitivity appears in the prior literature. Two cases of scarlet red allergy are presented and documented by patch testing. Discussion is oriented to alert clinicians to the recognition and treatment of this potential complication.

Prevalence of foot eczema and associated occupational and non-occupational factors in patients with hand eczema.

BACKGROUND: Foot eczema often occurs in combination with hand eczema. However, in contrast to the situation with hand eczema, knowledge about foot eczema is scarce, especially in occupational settings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of foot eczema and associated factors in patients with hand eczema taking part in a tertiary individual prevention programme for occupational skin diseases. PATIENTS/MATERIALS/METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, the medical records of 843 patients taking part in the tertiary individual prevention programme were evaluated. RESULTS: Seven hundred and

[Contact allergy caused by new dental impression materials].

In 1965 a new group of polymeric materials has been introduced into dentistry which is used for temporary crowns, bridges and impression materials. In handling it contact may occur with all components of these impression materials (Scutan, Impregum). Contact over a long period may lead to allergic contact dermatitis. Epicutaneous tests in three dentists and a technical assistant revealed that the catalysts of the impression materials are responsible for contact allergy. In experiments with guinea pigs the strong sensitization capacity of the catalysts could be demonstrated. Methyl-dichlorbenzo

[Latex contact urticaria and prick test with latex extract].

Latex contact urticaria is being reported with increasing frequency. Atopic patients with dermatitis of the hands are at risk of developing this potentially life threatening allergy. Since 1994 we have tested 200 patients in our dermatological department using the latex skin prick test. 20 relevant, positive latex tests have been found. Glove tests and latex-RAST were performed where these were indicated. The diagnosis of latex contact urticaria would have been overlooked in nine patients had the latex prick test not been performed. The clinical manifestations and findings in 24 patients with

Contact allergy in children.

With a view to determining the frequency of contact allergy in children, a group of 100 subjects 5 to 15 years of age with various dermatoses was examined. The study group included children with allergic dermatoses (atopic dermatitis, eczema, and others) as well as nonallergic skin diseases (alopecia areata, psoriasis, vitiligo). The frequency of contact allergy occurrence in the individual groups has been determined. Contact allergy occurred the most frequently in children with various forms of eczema (60 percent), the least frequently in those with nonallergic dermatoses (32 percent). Childr

Atopic dermatitis: addressing allergy, infection, itch and complementary therapies.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex condition that results from the dynamic interplay between genetic predisposition, skin barrier defects, environmental factors, and a dysfunctional immune system. As a result, AD can be complicated by irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and imbalances in the skin microbiome, which can subsequently exacerbate the severity and complicate the course of preexisting atopic disease. Itch is an important symptom of AD, as it plays a large role in the quality of life of patients and their families. Since AD is a chronic, inflammatory disease that recrudesces thr

Skin barrier breakdown: a renaissance in emollient therapy.

Breakdown of the skin barrier is the first event in the development of atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis). Research over the past five years has indicated that this arises as a result of the interaction of environmental agents such as soap and other detergents with the products of changes in several genes. These genetic changes predispose to the breakdown of the skin barrier, which allows the penetration of allergens, triggering a flare of atopic eczema. This new understanding of how breakdown of the skin barrier is the first event in the development of atopic eczema provides a rationale for a

Recent Advances in Pharmacotherapeutic Paradigm of Mild to Recalcitrant Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic skin inflammatory disorder characterized by perivascular infiltration of immunoglobulin E (IgE), T lymphocytes, and mast cells. The key factors responsible for the pathophysiology of this disease are immunological disorders and defects in epidermal barrier properties. Pruritus, intense itching, psychological stress, deprived physical and mental performance, and sleep disturbance are the hallmark features of this dermatological disorder. Preventive interventions such as educational programs, avoidance of allergens, and exclusive care toward the skin c

Pustulosis palmoplantaris and chronic eczematous hand dermatitis. Treatment, epidermal Langerhans cells and association with thyroid disease.

Long-standing hand and foot dermatoses, e.g. pustulosis palmoplantaris (PPP) and chronic eczematous hand dermatitis, severely affect the patients' quality of life. The cause of PPP is unknown and the disease usually responds unsatisfactorily to treatment. The aims of the studies of PPP were to determine the prevalence of thyroid disease and to evaluate the relative merits of treatment with etretinate, psoralen photochemotherapy (PUVA), and a combination of the two. Furthermore, epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) were quantified in lesional skin before and after treatment. The prevalence of thyroi

Rash and Fever: Identifying Animal or Plant Origins.

Phytophotodermatitis is a dermatological condition resulting from exposure of the skin to furanocoumarins and subsequent exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It has been described mainly after direct contact with plants but also with their extracts, particularly limes, lemons, figs, celery, or parsley. The clinical presentation is variable and may range from asymptomatic to erythematous rash, which may progress into vesicles or bullae. The main differential diagnoses are contact dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, and burns. The diagnosis is based on clinical history, clinical findings, and physica

[Incontinence-associated dermatitis: a position paper].

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) describes damage to the skin caused by repeated and prolonged contact with urine and/or feces. Patients of all ages can be affected; the diagnosis is preferably used in adults and adolescents. The predilection sites are perineal, perianal, the inner thighs and the convex areas of the buttocks. Increased moisture on the skin surface, increased pH, occlusion, feces digestive enzymes and repeated skin cleansing procedures are pathophysiologically relevant factors. Typical clinical signs of IAD are erythema, erosions, excoriations and pain. Diagnosis is oft

Cosmetics and ocular allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review was to explore recent developments in the study of ocular cosmetics, as they pertain to adverse reactions that can be attributed to them. RECENT FINDINGS: Immunologically mediated adverse reactions to cosmetics are most commonly the result of sensitization to preservatives, fragrances and dyes used in these products. Metals such as nickel, cobalt, chromium and lead are used in products such as eye shadows and eye liners as well as toy makeup sets in amounts greater than the recommended amount of 1 ppm. Cosmetics make up the majority of fragrance-i

Formaldehyde-releasers: relationship to formaldehyde contact allergy. Part 2. Formaldehyde-releasers in clothes: durable press chemical finishes.

This is the second part of a review article on formaldehyde-releasers used as durable press chemical finishes (DPCF) in textiles. The early finishes contained large amounts of free formaldehyde, which led to many cases of allergic contact dermatitis to clothes in the 1950s and 1960s. Currently, most finishes are based on modified dimethylol dihydroxyethyleneurea, which releases less formaldehyde. Nevertheless, recent studies in the United States and Israel have identified patients reacting to DPCF, considered to have allergic contact reactions to clothes, either from formaldehyde released by t

Wet dressing therapy in conjunction with topical corticosteroids is effective for rapid control of severe pediatric atopic dermatitis: experience with 218 patients over 30 years at Mayo Clinic.

BACKGROUND: At our institution, hospitalization for intensive treatment (combining wet dressings and topical corticosteroids) is a primary intervention for severe pediatric atopic dermatitis. Prior reports of this treatment are limited. OBJECTIVE: We sought to review the efficacy of wet dressings for pediatric atopic dermatitis. METHODS: We reviewed records of pediatric patients hospitalized from January 1, 1980, through April 20, 2010, who received intensive topical treatments for atopic dermatitis. RESULTS: In total, 218 pediatric patients had widespread atopic dermatitis severe enough to

Relevance of multiparametric skin bioengineering in a prospectively-followed cohort of junior hairdressers.

There is conflicting evidence concerning predictors of individual susceptibility to develop irritant contact dermatitis in wet work. A cohort of initially 92 hairdresser apprentices was prospectively followed for 3 years. The association between anamnestic and clinical findings, and multiparametric skin bioengineering data (transepidermal water loss [TEWL], microcirculation, capacitance, pH, sebum, temperature) was investigated. The observation intervals were 3 months in the 1st year of training and 12 months thereafter. Of the 92 apprentices, 6 had already developed hand dermatitis on 1st exa

Annexin 1 Reduces Dermatitis-Induced Itch and Cholestatic Itch through Inhibiting Neuroinflammation and Iron Overload in the Spinal Dorsal Horn of Mice.

The unclear pathogenesis of chronic itch originating from several systemic disorders poses challenges to clinical intervention. Recent studies recapitulate the spinal neurocircuits associated with neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity responsible for pruriceptive sensations. The resolution of nociception and inflammation by Annexin 1 (ANXA1) has been identified. Given that pain and itch share many neural mechanisms, we employed two mice models of chronic itch to study the underlying targets and therapeutic potential of ANXA1, comprising allergic contact dermatitis-induced itch and cholesta

Evaluation of the presence of allergens in children's products available for sale in a big city.

Children's products are considered safe by the general population and doctors. Labels with terms such as "hypoallergenic" or "dermatologically recommended and tested" denote trust and credibility with the idea that they can be used by any individual. Patients with allergic contact dermatitis may be sensitive to allergens present in any product, including children's. There is insufficient knowledge about allergens in these products in our country. We evaluated 254 children's products, and at least one allergen was present in 236 (93%) of them. The indication of a topical product should be caref

[The three-step programme of skin protection. A useful instrument of primary prevention or more effective in secondary prevention?].

For many years the three-step programme of skin protection, consisting of skin protection before work, cleaning and skin care after work, is one of the generally recommended measures to prevent occupational contact dermatitis. While protective creams are supposed to prevent skin damage caused by irritant contact, skin cleansing should mildly remove aggressive substances from the skin, whereas post-exposure skin care is intended to enhance epidermal barrier regeneration. This programme is strongly followed by most of the employees. But in spite of intensive preventive measurements the rate of r

Occupational latex exposure: characteristics of contact and systemic reactions in 47 workers.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have noted an apparent increase in the prevalence of natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy among workers with occupational latex exposure (OLE). The risk factors for and the natural history of NRL allergy in this population are not well delineated, and the utility and comparability of immunoassays as confirmatory testing are unclear. METHODS: Serum samples and medical histories were obtained from 47 symptomatic workers with OLE, from nine other individuals with a history consistent with NRL allergy, and from 10 atopic asymptomatic NRL-exposed control subjects. Carbon fiber-laminated epoxy resin causing chronic occupational dermatosis: presentation with erythroderma and dyschromia-a case report.

Epoxy resins are a common cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Carbon fiber-laminated epoxy resin (CFLER) is a newer material with enhanced mechanical properties, but its health effects remain underreported. A 46-year-old male worker developed erythroderma involving >90% of his body surface and dyschromia after chronic exposure to CFLER in a confined workspace. Skin biopsy demonstrated features of chronic dermatitis, and immunohistochemistry revealed uneven melanocyte distribution. Laboratory studies showed elevated immunoglobulin E levels without internal organ dysfunction. Ches
