A 44-year-old man with a history of asthma presented with intermittent convulsion of the right limb, fever in the late afternoon, and decreased exercise tolerance over 2 months. Occasional productive cough, no hemoptysis, and weight loss of nearly 6 kg were observed during this period. Neither chemotherapy nor oral immunosuppressive drugs had been administered, and no exposure to toxic substances was known. He was a cook and had smoked approximately one pack of cigarettes per day for the past 20 years. The living environment was relatively humid. The patient presented to a local hospital, wher

The neglected and rare zoonotic disease caused by monkeypox virus (MPV) has recently spread widely, resulting in the largest known monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa, where it is endemic. MPV belongs to the Poxviridae family, genus Orthopoxvirus. At least two different clades have been identified, each having different fatality rates but recent cases are all phylogenetically related to the West African clade. MPV is transmitted directly by either person-to-person, -animal, or virus-contaminated fomite contact. The disease is often self-limited, and clinical symptoms include fever, skin lesio

Monkeypox disease is a zoonosis that has the monkey virus (MPXV) as its etiologic agent, an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus that has caused some severe cases, leading to 3-6% fatality ratio. MPXV exhibits similar symptoms to those observed for Smallpox infection. Human-to-human transmission occurs via droplet respiratory particles and close contact with skin lesions of an infected person or recently contaminated objects. MPXV symptoms include fever, intense headache, back pain, myalgia, severe asthenia, lymphadenopathy, and skin eruption. The 2022 outbreak is growing, spreading over 75 cou

Ebola virus (EBOV), one member of the family Filoviridae, can causes hemorrhagic fever and other severe diseases in humans with a high mortality rate (25-90%). Until recently, there were no approved drugs and very limited treatment method for Ebola virus disease. In this study, we discovered a series of potent Ebola entry inhibitors with the (3S,4aS,8aS)-2-(3-amino-2-hydroxypropyl)decahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxamide scaffold from high-throughput screening in reported pseudotyped virus system. Further optimization resulted a most potent compound 28 (IC50= 0.05 μM, SI = 98), which displayed 3-fo

Bacillus cereus bacteremia is an infectious disease that may sometimes be fatal with a rapid clinical course. We performed a retrospective analysis on 12 patients with Bacillus cereus bacteremia recruited from January 2010 to March 2015. The primary diseases were acute leukemia (n=5), myelodysplastic syndromes (n=3), malignant lymphoma (n=3), and hemophagocytic syndrome (n=1). Neutrophil count at the onset of this bacteremia was less than 500 cells/µl in 9 patients. At the onset of bacteremia, we observed neurological symptoms (n=7), gastrointestinal symptoms (n=6), and findings suspected of i

Brugada syndrome (BS) is a hereditary cardiac disease leading to sudden cardiac death. It does not display any structural cardiac abnormalities. It was first described in 1992, as the syndrome of 'right bundle branch block, persistent ST segment elevation, and sudden death.' Brugada phenocopy (BP) is a relatively new term used to describe electrocardiogram (ECG) patterns that resemble BS but are due to other reversible causes such as electrolyte abnormalities, fever, cocaine or alcohol intoxication, and side effect of certain medications such as sodium channel blockers, beta blockers, antidepr

PURPOSE: Encephalitis secondary to human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection is frequently encountered in immunocompromised patients; in contrast, HHV-6 encephalitis in immunocompetent patients is rare. There are only 3 reports of status epilepticus due to HHV-6 encephalitis in immunocompetent adults. In the present study, a case of refractory status epilepticus secondary to HHV-6 encephalitis was reported in an immunocompetent female.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a previously healthy 46-year-old female who presented with a one-week history of back pain, fever and generalized tonic-clonic sei

Arenaviruses cause chronic and asymptomatic infections in their natural host, rodents, and several arenaviruses cause severe hemorrhagic fever that has a high mortality in infected humans, seriously threatening public health. There are currently no FDA-licensed drugs available against arenaviruses; therefore, it is important to develop novel antiviral strategies to combat them, which would be facilitated by a detailed understanding of the interactions between the viruses and their hosts. To this end, we performed a transcriptomic analysis on cells infected with arenavirus lymphocytic choriomen

Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) is a tick-borne flavivirus classified as a biosafety level-4 (BSL4) pathogen. Studies of OHFV are restricted to be conducted within BSL4 laboratories. Currently, no commercial vaccines or antiviral drugs are available against OHFV infection. In this study, we recovered a replication-deficient OHFV with an NS1 deletion (OHFV-ΔNS1) and reporter virus replacing NS1 with the Gaussia luciferase (Gluc) (OHFV-ΔNS1-Gluc). Both the defective OHFV-ΔNS1 and OHFV-ΔNS1-Gluc virus could only replicate efficiently in the BHK21 cell line expressing NS1 (BHK21NS1) but not in

Heterotopic ossification can be defined as the formation of bone in tissues that have no ossification properties, such as in muscles and connective tissue of a periarticular region, without invasion of the joint capsule. This pathology usually has a benign course, but it can cause a reduction in the range of joint movement and hamper the rehabilitation process. Its etiology is still unknown and it usually is originated from posttraumatic complications, affecting 10-20% of patients with traumatic brain injury. Among its clinical manifestations, it may present pain and limitation of joint moveme

Ziziphus jujuba Mills, 'annab' in Iran, 'ber' in India or 'pomme sourette' in France, is a species whose fruit (known warmly as 'the fruits of life' in China) has been consumed for centuries for its nutritional value. The food industry used it as a food additive and flavoring. The dry seeds, the crude leaves and the stem bark are still used in ethnopharmacology to treat digestive disorders and gastric ulcers as antitussive, laxative and hypotensive drugs; even now, it is used in China to treat children who suffer from typhoid fever, furuncle and ecthyma. In Taiwan, the dry seeds for the variet

Zika virus is one of the emerging viruses and is of significant threat to human health globally. It is a mosquito borne flavivirus similar to dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile viruses. It was reported about 5 decades ago and then it spreads to different parts of the world. Large outbreaks were reported on Yap Islands in 2007. Now it has gained wide attention globally by health communities. Major vector for virus transmission is Aedes aegypti mosquito. ZIKV infection is mostly asymptomatic but it is also responsible to cause mild influenza like illness to serious manifestations. There is no s

The genus Flavivirus comprises a large number of small, positive-sense single-stranded, RNA viruses able to replicate in the cytoplasm of certain arthropod and/or vertebrate host cells. The genus, which has some 70 member species, includes a number of emerging and re-emerging pathogens responsible for outbreaks of human disease around the world, such as the West Nile, dengue, Zika, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, and tick-borne encephalitis viruses. Like other RNA viruses, flaviviruses have a compact RNA genome that efficiently stores all the information required f

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), an important pathogen in Eastern and Southern Asia and the Pacific, has spread to Australia and other territories in recent years. Although the vaccine for JEV has been used in some countries, development of efficient antiviral drugs is still an urgent requirement. Replicon systems have been widely used in the research of viral replication and antiviral screening for West Nile virus (WNV), yellow fever virus (YFV) and dengue virus (DENV). Here, a novel JEV replicon harboring the Rluc and Pac gene (JEV-Pac-Rluc-Rep) was constructed. Furthermore, we established
