Social inequality and barriers to cardiac rehabilitation in the rehab-North register.

AIM: Barriers to participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) may occur at three levels of the referral process (lack of information, declining to participate, and referral to appropriate CR programme). The aim is to analyse the impact of socioeconomic status on barriers to CR and investigate whether such barriers influenced the choice of referral. METHODS: The Rehab-North Register, a cross-sectional study, enrolled 5455 patients hospitalised at Aalborg University Hospital with myocardial infarction (MI) during 2011-2014. Patients hospitalised with ST-elevated MI and complicated non-ST-elevat

Delirium assessed by Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale in advanced cancer patients admitted to an acute palliative/supportive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is often unrecognized in cancer patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of delirium assessed by the Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale (MDAS) and possible associated factors on admission to an acute palliative/supportive care unit (APSCU). The secondary outcome was to assess changes in MDAS and symptom burden at time of discharge. METHODS: A consecutive sample of advanced cancer patients who were admitted to an APSCU was prospectively assessed for a period of 10 months. Patient demographics, including age, gender, primary diagnosis, Karnofsky sta

The relation between sleep duration and sedentary behaviours in European adults.

Too much sitting, and both short and long sleep duration are associated with obesity, but little is known on the nature of the relations between these behaviours. We therefore examined the associations between sleep duration and time spent sitting in adults across five urban regions in Europe. We used cross-sectional survey data from 6,037 adults (mean age 51.9 years (SD 16.4), 44.0% men) to assess the association between self-reported short (<6 h per night), normal (6-8 h per night) and long (>8 h per night) sleep duration with self-report total time spent sitting, time spent sitting at work,

Assessment of the Quality of Life in Patients After Liver Transplantation as an Important Part of Treatment Results.

INTRODUCTION: Organ transplantation for many patients with end-stage liver disease is a life-saving operation. Progressing at a time and usually irreversible damage to the organ directly leads to many life-threatening complications as well as to progressive deterioration in health and the quality of life (QOL). On the other hand, the assessment of QOL after liver transplantation, apart from the survival analysis, should take into account general health perception, physical activity, a place in the family and in the environment, as well as the patient's social and professional activity. Investigating dimensionality and measurement bias of DSM-5 alcohol use disorder in a representative sample of the largest metropolitan area in South America.

BACKGROUND: Given the recent launch of a new diagnostic classification (DSM-5) for alcohol use disorders (AUD), we aimed to investigate its dimensionality and possible measurement bias in a non-U.S. METHODS: The current analyses were restricted to 948 subjects who endorsed drinking at least one drink per week in the past year from a sample of 5037 individuals. Data came from São Paulo Megacity Project (which is part of World Mental Health Surveys) collected between 2005 and 2007. First, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was carried out to test for the best dimensional structure for DSM-5-AUD

Demographic and Clinical Features of Chinese Heroin Users Who Switch from Non-injection to Injection.

BACKGROUND: Injection drug users (IDUs) are at high-risk for acquiring human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, and other infections, and delaying the switch from non-injection drug use to injection to drug use could reduce the spread of these infections. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence of switching from non-injected heroin use (usually smoking or "chasing") to injection and to investigate the risk factors for this change. METHODS: We reviewed the socio-demographic and clinical data of 7305 heroin-dependent patients treated at a detoxification clinic of a university-affiliated

Somatic awareness and symptom attribution in ischemic stroke patients.

PROBLEM: Patient delay in seeking treatment for stroke symptoms is a major factor in morbidity and mortality due to stroke. Every 4 minutes, someone dies of a stroke, and 54% of those deaths occur before the patient reaches the hospital. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of somatic awareness and symptom attribution to treatment-seeking behaviors in ischemic stroke patients. DESIGN: This was a descriptive, correlational pilot study. SETTING: This study was carried out in three tertiary-care hospitals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Binghamton, New York. S

A new model for management of mycetoma in the Sudan.

Patients with mycetoma usually present late with advanced disease, which is attributed to lack of medical and health facilities in endemic areas, poor health education and low socio-economic status. With this background, an integrated patient management model at the village level was designed to address the various problems associated with mycetoma. The model was launched in an endemic village in the Sudan, between 2010 and 2013. This model is described in a prospective, descriptive, community-based study, aimed to collect epidemiological, ecological, and clinical data and to assess knowledge,

Family demographics, parental awareness of childhood eye diseases and eye care for children, and barriers to follow-up eye care were assessed. RESULTS: Of 971 children sampled, 199 (20.5%) failed a visual acuity screening. The survey was completed by the parents of 58 children
