Therapeutic Effects of Cinnamaldehyde on Neuromuscular Function in Rat Parkinson's Model Induced by Rotenone.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and nonmotor symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of trans-cinnamaldehyde (TCA) on central and peripheral toxicity in a rotenone-induced rat model of PD. All analyses were conducted on the seventh day after intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of rotenone (2 mg/kg). Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), a key enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis, and nuclear receptor-related 1 protein (Nurr1), a transcription factor essential for the differentiation, maturation, and survival of nigral neuron

iFEMG-Based Muscle Function Assessment for Rehabilitation Monitoring After Knee Anterior Cruciate Ligament Repair Surgery.

The ligaments and muscles of the knee joint play an important role in maintaining knee joint stability, ensuring smooth movement of the lower limbs. However, the assessment and monitoring of the muscle function following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction are hindered due to the inherent constraints of conventional clinical evaluation techniques. This study employed an integrated flexible force-electromyography (iFEMG) system to quantify differences in neuromuscular activities and associated mechanical properties between affected and healthy sides during post-ACL reconstruction re

Three- and Four-Dimensional Pelvic Floor Ultrasound in Chronic Pelvic Pain: Evidence, Technical Considerations, and a Proposed Framework.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a heterogeneous condition in which visceral, musculoskeletal, neuropathic, and pain-processing contributors often overlap. Pelvic floor ultrasound can depict morphology and movement, but its CPP-specific evidence base remains limited. This targeted narrative review summarizes direct CPP evidence; evidence from endometriosis, dyspareunia, myofascial pain, and methodological pelvic floor cohorts; and the technical distinctions among transperineal/translabial and transvaginal routes, static three-dimensional (3D) volumes, real-time four-dimensional (4D) assessment, mu

Upper limb compensatory strategies across tasks with an ultrasound-controlled prosthesis.

Upper-limb amputation often leads to compensatory trunk and shoulder movements, increasing the risk of secondary musculoskeletal complications. This issue is exacerbated by the limited wrist functionality in current prosthetic systems, which restrict natural movement patterns during daily activities. Here, we investigate how limitations in the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the prosthetic wrist influence compensatory upper body motion during functionally relevant tasks. Three transradial amputees, experienced in the use of both body-powered and myoelectric prostheses, were fitted with custom sock

Bilateral trapezius activity during a dual task depends on age and sex - Results of an experimental laboratory study.

Despite strong associations between prevalence rates of musculoskeletal complaints in the neck-shoulder area and age and sex, studies examining the dependence on muscular strain on these factors are sparse. During a dual task, simulating repetitive moderate- and low-force work under cognitive demands, the study examined upper trapezius muscle (UT) activity in four equal-sized groups representing older and younger women and men. All 48 participants completed four 30-minute dual-task conditions of two levels of muscular load (mean 5%/10% maximum force) combined with an easy or difficult cognitiv

Effects of Limited Wrist Motion and Forearm Rotation on Scapular Kinematics and Muscle Activity During Spoon-Feeding in Healthy Young Adults.

Background: Wrist-forearm orthoses used during self-feeding may alter scapular and shoulder mechanics and increase proximal load, but this has not been quantified. Methods: Seventeen right-hand-dominant young adults performed a spoon-feeding task under free and restricted conditions. A thermoplastic wrist-forearm orthosis positioned the wrist at approximately 30° dorsiflexion at rest and was intended to constrain wrist motion during the task without rigidly immobilizing forearm pronation-supination. Three-dimensional kinematics (scapula, shoulder, trunk, and distal joints) were recorded using

Kinetic-Locked Fiber Networks Enable Anti-Fouling, Mechanically Robust Zwitterionic Hydrogels.

Zwitterionic hydrogels possess exceptional antifouling characteristics and biocompatibility, but their weak mechanical strength limits implantable applications. Existing enhancement strategies either introduce non-zwitterionic phases that compromise antifouling performance or employ zwitterionic fillers that still fall short of achieving high mechanical robustness. Here, we present a kinetic-locking strategy to fabricate strong, antifouling zwitterionic composite fibers for hydrogel reinforcement. Co-dissolving hydrophilic zwitterionic and hydrophobic polymers followed by electrospinning kinet

Reorganization of Directed Corticomuscular Network via Median Nerve Stimulation in Cervical Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) originates in dysfunctional sensorimotor integration, creating an urgent need for neuromodulatory interventions that recalibrate pathological corticomuscular circuits. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether median nerve electrical stimulation (MNES) can serve as a novel, noninvasive therapy that specifically targets the abnormal corticomuscular network. METHODS: We investigated high-density electroencephalography combined with synchronized electromyography (EMG) recordings from 17 patients and 17 healthy control subjects during MNES and

Multi-Source Motion Inputs and FA-TA-BiLSTM for Lower-Limb Joint Angle Prediction.

Accurate lower-limb joint angle prediction can support motion-state perception and rehabilitation-oriented analysis. This offline feasibility study evaluated an FA-TA-BiLSTM model using surface electromyography (sEMG) features, together with historical hip and knee joint angles and angular velocities. Data were collected from five healthy adult male participants during level walking and sit-to-stand transitions, and the prediction horizon was 100 ms. Support vector regression (SVR), BiLSTM, and FA-TA-BiLSTM were compared under the same combined-input condition and evaluation protocol. The FA-T

Reusable and Soft Self-Adhesive Epidermal Electrodes for Human Skin Enabled by Functional Additives.

Wearable electronics, particularly dry epidermal electrodes, provide human-connected interfaces for recording biopotential signals. However, their practical utility is often hindered by their limited operational longevity and the resulting environmental burden of electronic waste, as most conventional electrodes are discarded after a single use because of performance degradation. Herein, a reusable, soft, and conductive epidermal electrode is reported, fabricated through the precise incorporation of functional additives. By intentionally modulating the polymer chain architecture, a homogeneous

How sleeping minds decide: State-specific reconfigurations of lexical decision-making.

Sleep has traditionally been conceptualized as a state of cognitive disconnection, yet emerging evidence indicates that decision-making capacities persist across sleep stages. Here, we elucidate the computational mechanisms underlying real-time lexical decision-making during polysomnographically-verified sleep, using facial electromyography and hierarchical drift diffusion modeling in both healthy individuals and participants with narcolepsy. We found that lexical decision-making was preserved during N1 and lucid REM sleep, but relied on distinct computational strategies: in N1 sleep, both enh

Recognizing and managing excessive respiratory drive and effort: an expert narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Patient self-inflicted lung injury (P-SILI) has been proposed as a contributor to lung damage during spontaneous breathing or partially assisted ventilation. P-SILI usually arises from excessive inspiratory efforts driven by abnormally elevated respiratory drive. Assessing respiratory drive and effort is therefore crucial for identifying patients at risk and guiding tailored lung-protective strategies. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review provides practical recommendations for the identification and management of patients at risk of developing P-SILI. EXPERT OPINION: Accurate a

Probable Postsurgical Parsonage-Turner Syndrome Following Endoscopic Endonasal Pituitary Surgery: A Diagnostic Challenge Case Report: Illustrative Case.

Brachial neuritis is a rare inflammatory brachial plexopathy characterized by acute and severe shoulder or upper-extremity pain followed by progressive weakness and sensory disturbances. Commonly associated with viral illness, vaccination, or trauma, it can also occur as a postoperative complication. A 65-year-old gentleman presented with visual loss from a large recurrent pituitary adenoma and underwent an uncomplicated resection. Shortly after surgery, he developed swelling and pain in the right forearm and hand, which later evolved into patchy sensory loss and progressive weakness throughou

Systematic Evaluation of sEMG Processing Pipelines for Gesture Recognition.

Gesture recognition enables intuitive human-robot communication, where surface electromyography (sEMG) provides a minimally invasive interface for detecting motor activity. However, the lack of systematic evaluation of processing pipelines represents a critical barrier to reliable subject-independent deployment. This work presents a systematic evaluation of sEMG processing pipelines for three-gesture recognition (Neutral, Ask, Take) using a Bagged Trees classifier under Leave-One-Subject-Out (LOSO) cross-validation across ten participants. A mixed-effects ANOVA over 1872 experimental configura

Ultrafast venous and sagittal sinus constrictions in the brain driven by abdominal pressure.

Nearly all the blood supplying the cortex exits via the bridging veins (BVs) that drain into the superior sagittal sinus (SSS), making these vessels key chokepoints for cerebral blood flow. Using optical imaging in head-fixed mice, we found that the SSS, BVs, and some other pial veins exhibit ultrafast constrictions (<0.1 s) at the onset of locomotion, following whisker stimulation, and upon awakening from sleep. Constrictions of the BVs and the SSS were strongly correlated with abdominal muscle electromyography activity and were tightly correlated with respiration at rest. The rapid decrease
