BACKGROUND: Quantifying the potential cancer cases associated with environmental carcinogen exposure can help inform efforts to improve population health. This study developed an approach to estimate the environmental burden of cancer and applied it to Ontario, Canada. The purpose was to identify environmental carcinogens with the greatest impact on cancer burden to support evidence-based decision making.
METHODS: We conducted a probabilistic assessment of the environmental burden of cancer in Ontario. We selected 23 carcinogens that we defined as "environmental" (e.g., pollutants) and were r

The Lagoon of Venice is a continuously evolving ecosystem that rapidly responds to anthropic stressors. The UNESCO World Heritage site "Venice and its Lagoon", is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Mass tourism increases marine litter, water traffic emissions, solid waste, and sewage release. Plastic marine litter is not only a major aesthetic problem diminishing tourists experience of Venice, it also leaches contaminants into the seawater. Since there is a dearth in the literature regarding microplastic leachable compounds and overtourism related pollutants, the project studied

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the acute effects of exposure to air pollution on ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTAs) in an East Asian population. The association between air pollution and VTA has not yet been studied in an East Asian country affected by the Asian dust phenomenon, which worsens air quality.
METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 160patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices in the Seoul metropolitan area who were followed for 5.5±3.8years. We used ICD records of VTAs and matched these with hourly measurements of air pollutant concentrations and met

Numerous observational studies have assessed the association between ambient air pollution and chronic disease incidence, but there is no uniform approach to create an exposure metric that captures the variability in air pollution through time and determines the most relevant exposure window. The purpose of the present study was to assess ways of modeling exposure to air pollution in relation to incident hypertension. We simulated data on incident hypertension to assess the performance of six air pollution exposure metrics, using characteristics from the Black Women's Health Study. Each metric

BACKGROUND: Airborne particulate matter (PM) consists of particles from diverse sources, including vehicle exhausts. Associations between short-term PM changes and stroke incidence have been shown. Cumulative exposures over several months, or years, are less well studied; few studies examined ischaemic subtypes or PM source.
AIMS: This study combines a high resolution urban air quality model with a population-based stroke register to explore associations between long-term exposure to PM and stroke incidence.
METHOD: Data from the South London Stroke Register from 2005-2012 were included. Poi

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that air pollution may be a risk factor for breast cancer, but the biological mechanism remains unknown. High mammographic density (MD) is one of the strongest predictors and biomarkers of breast cancer risk, but it has yet to be linked to air pollution. We investigated the association between long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and MD in a prospective cohort of women 50 years and older.
METHODS: For the 4,769 women (3,930 postmenopausal) participants in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health cohort (1993-1997) who attended mammographic screen

Chlorpyrifos, one of the most widely used insecticides, has been detected in air, rain, marine sediments, surface waters, drinking water wells, and solid and liquid dietary samples collected from urban and rural areas. Its metabolite, TCP, has also been widely detected in urinary samples collected from people of various age groups. With a goal of elucidating the factors that control the environmental contamination, impact, persistence, and ecotoxicity of chlorpyrifos, we examine, in this review, the peer-reviewed literature relating to chlorpyrifos adsorption and desorption behavior in various

The recognition that current air pollution levels cause harmful health effects makes the definition of the air quality regulatory process imperative. This study examines the association between exposure to air pollution and hospital admissions in the city of São Paulo, aiming to support the development of measures to reduce such health risks. The authors conducted an ecological time series study of hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in children and the elderly in relation to daily air pollution levels, using generalized additive Poisson regression models. An efficient catalytic detoxification method for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in fly ash produced by municipal waste incinerator has been studied using palladium on carbon (Pd/C) catalyst. As one of the trace components in fly ash, the detoxification of PCDD/Fs is very difficult because of the interferences of other persistent components with higher concentrations. However, the detoxification reaction of PCDD/Fs shows higher activity in water/isopropanol solution using commercial Pd/C catalyst at 40 degrees C under normal pressure. The results i

Methyl mercury is a developmental neurotoxicant. Exposure results principally from consumption by pregnant women of seafood contaminated by mercury from anthropogenic (70%) and natural (30%) sources. Throughout the 1990s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made steady progress in reducing mercury emissions from anthropogenic sources, especially from power plants, which account for 41% of anthropogenic emissions. However, the U.S. EPA recently proposed to slow this progress, citing high costs of pollution abatement. To put into perspective the costs of controlling emissions from Ame

Transgenic Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) overexpressing y-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) were shown previously to have two-fold higher levels of glutathione and total nonprotein thiols, as well as enhanced cadmium tolerance and accumulation. Here, the hypothesis was tested that these transgenics have enhanced tolerance to organic pollutants, based on the reasoning that many organic xenobiotics are detoxified via conjugation to glutathione. Both the ECS and GS transgenics showed enhanced tolerance to atrazine: while root growth of wildtype seedlings was inhi

Riverbed mining exerts significant pressure on Himalayan river systems, yet its influence on trace metal dynamics in sediments remains poorly understood across elevation gradients. This study quantifies the concentration and ecological risk of six trace metals Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb in surface sediments from the Chandra River (Upper Himalayas), Beas River (Middle Himalayas), and Chakki Khad (Lower Himalayas), Himachal Pradesh, India. Ten surface sediment samples were collected from each river and evaluated using pollution indices (Igeo, PINemerow, PLI, PERI, MERMQ, and MEC), sediment quali

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and hypertension, are compounding public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries, contributing millions of premature deaths annually. Although several studies have explored the relationship between ambient air pollution and blood pressure, evidence remains limited for young adults. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the magnitude of associations between PM2.5 exposure and blood pressure among young adults residing in Asia. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searche

Between 2018 and 2024, a renewed and persistent decline in water level was observed in the Mar Chiquita Lagoon, Córdoba Province, Argentina. This prompted an investigation into how this intensified decrease affected the frequency of salt dust storm occurrences. In this study, we analyze events from this period and compare them with those documented during the previous interval (2004-2013). Approximately 200 salt dust storms were identified between 2004 and 2024. These events originate from saline deposits exposed along the lagoon's shorelines as a result of sustained water-level lowering since

BACKGROUND: Short-term exposure to air pollution is linked to adverse health outcomes, yet most studies assume constant associations over time and focus on densely populated regions. Evidence on temporal changes and impacts in less populated areas remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (1) estimate non-linear associations between mortality and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), as well as between mortality and a mixture of PM2.5, ground-level ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), (2) characterize non-linear temporal trends, (3) expand analysis beyond the most populated regions, and (4) assess
