The frequently low cobalamin levels in dementia usually signify treatable metabolic, neurologic and electrophysiologic abnormalities.

Cobalamin levels are frequently low in patients with dementia, but it is unclear if they represent definable deficiency and what the mechanisms are. Therefore, patients being evaluated for dementia who had low cobalamin levels but no obvious evidence of deficiency were studied hematologically, neurologically and with metabolic tests and were re-evaluated after cobalamin treatment. Abnormalities suggestive of or diagnostic for deficiency were documented in most of the 16 demented and nondemented patients. Metabolic results: 50% of patients tested had abnormal deoxyuridine suppression and 44% ha

Cholinergic nerve-mediated excitation in the guinea pig choledochoduodenal junction activated by distension.

The electrical basis of propulsive contractions in the guinea pig choledochoduodenal junction (CDJ), which are triggered by distension, was investigated using intracellular microelectrode recording techniques. The isolated CDJ was placed in a continuously perfused tissue chamber at 37 degrees C. Membrane potential was recorded from smooth muscle cells in either the ampulla or in the upper CDJ (upper junction) regions, which were immobilized by pinning. Distension of the upper junction (20-30 s) by increasing intraductal hydrostatic pressure (mean elevation: 2.0 +/- 0.3 kPa, n = 13) triggered "

Involvement of cyclic AMP in multiple, excitatory actions of biogenic amines on the cardiac ganglion of the horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus.

Cyclic AMP appears to be involved in several excitatory actions of amines on neurones of the Limulus cardiac ganglion. Amines selectively increase levels of cardiac ganglion cyclic AMP with a magnitude and time course similar to that observed for amine-induced excitation of cardiac ganglion burst rate. With respect to either the physiological or biochemical effect, the apparent order of potency is octopamine greater than epinephrine approximately dopamine greater than norepinephrine. Elevation of cardiac ganglion cyclic AMP levels by octopamine or dopamine is dose-dependent and is potentiated

Physiological consequences of antiserum-mediated experimental demyelination in CNS.

To study the pathophysiology of immunologically mediated demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS), we injected 20 to 30 microliters of polyclonal antigalactocerebroside serum (AGC) into the lower thoracic dorsal column of the spinal cord in 20 Wistar rats. AGC-injected spinal cords contained areas of fascicular demyelination adjacent to the focus of axonal degeneration at the injection site. Somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded serially after tibial nerve stimulation. In 85% of AGC-injected animals, the following characteristics were observed by 3 days after injection: (1) de

Brainstem auditory pathway maturation in term neonates with congenital cytomegalovirus infection: a cohort study.

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMVi) is a leading cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and developmental delay. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) recording allows assessment of central auditory pathway maturation in neonates. We aimed to characterize the effect of cCMVi on the maturation of the brainstem auditory pathway in term neonates. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of neonates born with cCMVi in 2010-2018 and characterized their auditory pathway maturation using brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs). We compared inter-peak latency differences (I

IMI2-PainCare-BioPain-RCT3: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover, multi-center trial in healthy subjects to investigate the effects of lacosamide, pregabalin, and tapentadol on biomarkers of pain processing observed by electroencephalography (EEG).

BACKGROUND: IMI2-PainCare-BioPain-RCT3 is one of four similarly designed clinical studies aiming at profiling a set of functional biomarkers of drug effects on the nociceptive system that could serve to accelerate the future development of analgesics, by providing a quantitative understanding between drug exposure and effects of the drug on nociceptive signal processing in human volunteers. IMI2-PainCare-BioPain-RCT3 will focus on biomarkers derived from non-invasive electroencephalographic (EEG) measures of brain activity. METHODS: This is a multisite single-dose, double-blind, randomized, p

Electric activity of the rectosigmoid canal and its relation to rectal and sigmoid electric activity: an evidence of a sphincteric function of the rectosigmoid canal.

We have previously demonstrated that the rectosigmoid junction is more than a junction: it is a segment with a mean length of 2.8 cm which we termed the 'rectosigmoid canal' (RSC). Our data support the existence of a physiologic and anatomic sphincter at the RSC which regulates the passage of stools from the sigmoid colon (SC) to the rectum (R). In view of its sphincteric action we investigated the hypothesis that the RSC has a higher electric activity than that of the SC and R. The tests were performed during repair of huge incisional hernia in 11 subjects (age 46.7(12.5 years; 8 women). The

Evaluation of central motor conduction in hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients.

Deficiency or excess of thyroid hormones is associated with central nervous system (CNS) disturbances. Although the CNS involvement either in hypothyroidism or in hyperthyroidism have previously been shown on the basis of visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials studies, less is known about the function of central motor pathways in both disorders. We studied the motor evoked potentials (MEPs) following the magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex and spinal roots in 20 patients with hypothyroidism and in 19 patients with hyperthyroidism both before treatment and after they became e

Light-evoked modulation of basolateral membrane Cl- conductance in chick retinal pigment epithelium: the light peak and fast oscillation.

1. We studied the ionic mechanism of the light-peak voltage of the DC electroretinogram (DC ERG) in an in vitro preparation of chick neural retina-retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-choroid. The light peak originates from a depolarization of the RPE basolateral (basal) membrane, associated with an increase in its conductance. Using conventional and Cl(-)-selective microelectrodes, we tested the hypothesis that the light-peak voltage is generated by an increase in Cl- conductance (gCl) of the basolateral (basal) membrane. 2. Perfusion of the RPE basal membrane with 4,4'-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2

Dissociation of mu and delta opioid receptor-mediated reductions in evoked and spontaneous synaptic inhibition in the rat hippocampus in vitro.

Modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibition, and glutamate-mediated excitation by highly selective mu and delta opioid agonists was studied using intracellular recordings of CA1 pyramidal neuron synaptic responses in superfused hippocampal slices. Equimolar concentrations of the selective mu agonist, [Tyr-(D-Ala)-Gly-(N-Me-Phe)-Gly-ol]-enkephalin (DAGO), or the delta selective agonist, [D-Pen2,D-Pen5]-enkephalin (DPDPE), reversibly increased the amplitudes of excitatory post-synaptic potentials (EPSPs), evoked by Schaffer collateral/commissural stimulation, without alterin

Discharge profiles of abducens, accessory abducens, and orbicularis oculi motoneurons during reflex and conditioned blinks in alert cats.

The discharge profiles of identified abducens, accessory abducens, and orbicularis oculi motoneurons have been recorded extra- and intracellularly in alert behaving cats during spontaneous, reflexively evoked, and classically conditioned eyelid responses. The movement of the upper lid and the electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle also were recorded. Animals were conditioned by short, weak air puffs or 350-ms tones as conditioned stimuli (CS) and long, strong air puffs as unconditioned stimulus (US) using both trace and delayed conditioning paradigms. Motoneurons were ident

Potassium activity in photoreceptors, glial cells and extracellular space in the drone retina: changes during photostimulation.

1. A double-barrelled potassium-sensitive micro-electrode was developed that was fine enough to record intracellular electrical potentials and potassium activities (aK) in the drone retina. 2. aK was measured in the photoreceptor cells, in the pigment (glial) cells, and in the extracellular space, in the superfused, cut, retina. The effect of photostimulation was studied: 20 msec light flashes, intense enough to evoke receptor potentials of maximum amplitude were presented, 1/sec, in a train lasting about 2 min. 3. In photoreceptors with membrane potentials greater than or equal to 50 mV aK in

Investigation of Emotion Regulation Skills in Migraine Patients Using Electroencephalography (EEG) Method.

Emotion regulation is essential for maintaining daily functioning. Previous studies indicate that individuals with migraine have difficulty identifying emotions and exhibit higher alexithymia scores. The P300 and N400 components, associated with attention and semantic processes, provide insights into neural changes during emotion regulation. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between migraine and emotion regulation by evaluating the P300 and N400 responses obtained during emotion regulation tasks. Participants included individuals with and without a migraine diagnosis. Th

Investigating the role of rumination on reward and punishment processing in an operant conditioning task using event-related potentials.

Pain catastrophizing, and specifically rumination, are key components of the pain experience and a potential predictor of chronic pain. Pain trajectories in chronic pain patients can be influenced by operant conditioning paradigms, with limited knowledge of the mechanisms. Rumination and its impact on event-related potentials (ERPs) in a painful operant conditioning setting, may further elucidate how behavioral and cognitive manipulation can affect somatosensory and nociceptive processing. This study aimed to examine the impact of rumination on ERP responses to auditory feedback cues in a pain
