Pododermatitis in group housed rabbit does in Switzerland-Prevalence, severity and risk factors.

In rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.), pododermatitis is a chronic multifactorial skin disease that appears mainly on the plantar surface of the hind legs. In later stages, it causes pain leading to poor welfare of affected animals. Pododermatitis is commonly observed in commercial rabbit production in breeding does housed with wire mesh flooring. However, the prevalence in breeding does that are housed in groups on litter and plastic slats is not known. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the frequency, the severity and possible risk factors of pododermatitis in group hou

Occurrence and transformation of veterinary antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in dairy manure treated by advanced anaerobic digestion and conventional treatment methods.

Manure treatment technologies are rapidly developing to minimize eutrophication of surrounding environments and potentially decrease the introduction of antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) into the environment. While laboratory and pilot-scale manure treatment systems boast promising results, antibiotic and ARG removals in full-scale systems receiving continuous manure input have not been evaluated. The effect of treatment on ARGs is similarly lacking. This study examines the occurrence and transformation of sulfonamides, tetracyclines, tetracycline degradation products, and rela

Cryptosporidium species in post-weaned and adult sheep and goats from N.W. Spain: Public and animal health significance.

Application of molecular approaches has led to a significant progress on the knowledge of the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp. Nevertheless, molecular information on the occurrence of cryptosporidiosis in domestic small ruminants, especially in goats, are limited and restricted to the study of a modest number of isolates, mainly from diarrhoeic neonates. In order to determine the Cryptosporidium species present in healthy post-weaned and adult small ruminants from north-western Spain and to analyse a possible age-related distribution of species, faecal specimens were collected in sheep and

Prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. isolates from poultry in Lebanon and evidence of zoonotic potential.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis sp. is a common protozoan parasite frequently identified in the digestive tract of humans and a large variety of animal hosts worldwide, including birds. It exhibits a large genetic diversity with the identification of 17 subtypes (STs), most of them with low host specificity. ST6 and ST7 were identified in birds and suggested to represent avian STs only in the context of scarce small-scale epidemiological surveys. Moreover, these two STs also account for a significant proportion of human infections whose zoonotic origin has never been clearly confirmed. Therefore, mol

Effect of fenbendazole in water on pigs infected with Ascaris suum in finishing pigs under field conditions.

The husbandry of pigs for meat production is a constantly developing industry. Most studies on the effects of Ascaris suum infection in pigs and its prevention with anthelmintics are over a decade old. We examined the effect of 2.5mg fenbendazole per kg bodyweight administered in drinking water for two consecutive days on A. suum infection 1 and 6 weeks after pigs arrived to fattening units. We hypothesised that the treatment would reduce the presence of A. suum-infections, improve the average daily weight gain of pigs, reduce the percentage of liver rejections in pens by 50% and increase the

Diagnosis before treatment: Identifying dairy farmers' determinants for the adoption of sustainable practices in gastrointestinal nematode control.

Anthelmintic resistance is emerging in dairy cattle and this can result in a lack of effective control and production losses. Therefore, sustainable control strategies, such as targeted treatments (TT) and targeted selected treatments (TST), should be adopted by the industry. TT and TST approaches require the use of diagnostic methods to take informed treatment decisions. To understand the factors affecting the farmers' intention to adopt diagnostic methods before implementing anthelmintic drugs ('adoption intention'), a cross-sectional survey was carried out in dairy farms in Belgium (Flander

Estimation of acute and chronic Q fever incidence in children during a three-year outbreak in the Netherlands and a comparison with international literature.

BACKGROUND: In the Dutch 2007-2009 Q fever outbreak Coxiella burnetii was transmitted aerogenically from dairy goat farms to those living in the surrounding areas. Relatively few children were reported. The true number of pediatric infections is unknown. In this study, we estimate the expected number of acute and chronic childhood infections. METHODS: As Coxiella was transmitted aerogenic to those living near infected dairy goat farms, we could use adult seroprevalence data to estimate infection risk for inhabitants, children and adults alike. Using Statistics Netherlands data we estimated th

Economic Analysis of Classical Swine Fever Surveillance in the Netherlands.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious pig disease that causes economic losses and impaired animal welfare. Improving the surveillance system for CSF can help to ensure early detection of the virus, thereby providing a better initial situation for controlling the disease. Economic analysis is required to compare the benefits of improved surveillance with the costs of implementing a more intensive system. This study presents a comprehensive economic analysis of CSF surveillance in the Netherlands, taking into account the specialized structure of Dutch pig production, differences in

Prevalence and characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. in dairy cattle in Nile River delta provinces, Egypt.

Molecular characterizations of Cryptosporidium spp. in dairy cattle in industrialized nations have mostly shown a dominance of Cryptosporidium parvum, especially its IIa subtypes in pre-weaned calves. Few studies, however, have been conducted on the distribution of Cryptosporidium species and C. parvum subtypes in various age groups of dairy cattle in developing countries. In this study, we examined the prevalence and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium in dairy cattle in four Nile River delta provinces in Egypt. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen acid-fast microscopy was used to screen for Crypt

Field evaluation of the MM3-SERO ELISA for detection of anti-Fasciola IgG antibodies in milk samples from individual cows and bulk milk tanks.

We carried out a field evaluation of the MM3-SERO ELISA for the diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica infection, by analysing serum and milk samples from individual cows and samples from bulk milk tanks. The diagnostic performance of the assay was assessed with serum samples from all 257 cows in eight fluke-free herds, and 240 cows with natural fasciolosis (diagnosed in vivo and/or post-mortem). Assay performance for individual milk samples was determined by analysis of paired serum and milk samples from 947 lactating cows from 33 F. hepatica-infected farms. The diagnostic usefulness of the assay for

Subtyping Listeria monocytogenes isolates genetically related to the Swiss epidemic clone.

Macrorestriction analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to assess the diversity of strains within the epidemic-associated electrophoretic type 1 (ET1) clone of Listeria monocytogenes. For this purpose, a total of 144 isolates from Switzerland shown by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis to belong to the ET1 were examined. These isolates were subtyped by macrorestriction analysis using the enzymes ApaI and SmaI and field inversion gel electrophoresis. Among these 144 isolates, 45 were isolated in human listeriosis cases of the postepidemic period of 1988 to 1993 and 44 were isolate

Genomic profiling of Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from ISA Brown (Gallus gallus domesticus) in Bangladesh.

Poultry farming faces fowl cholera caused by Pasteurella multocida, yet genomic data are limited. Isolates from ISA Browns were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and sequenced (8.6, 1.4, and 1.3 M reads). De novo assemblies revealed genome sizes of ~2.4-2.5 Mb and guanine or cytosine (GC) content of ~40%.

[Group cryptosporidiosis morbidity in children].

The group morbidity with cryptosporidiosis (13 cases) was recorded in infants from a somatic hospital and a nursery school and also among unorganized groups. The factor of transmission was kefir prepared in the nursery milk kitchen. Cryptosporidian oocysts were not found in the personnel of the kitchen. It was supposed that the contamination of milk by oocysts occurred on milk farm. Single oocysts were found in milk sediments on the filter taken from a tank at a milk factory.

Distribution of Cysticercus bovis in lightly infected young cattle.

Sixty-seven young cattle grazed on a sewage farm since birth were slaughtered and the carcases finely dissected in search of Cysticercus bovis. Forty-seven (70%) were infected, but only 49% of infected cattle had cysts in tissues considered to be sites of predilection and only 19.8% of all cysts found were located in these sites. Most of the remaining cysts were distributed randomly throughout the masculature.

Phthalates in Animal Husbandry-A Narrative Review.

Phthalates (PAEs) are a group of organic compounds widely used across various industries. Their extensive application has led to significant environmental pollution; consequently, they are now ubiquitously found in surface water, groundwater, soil, the atmosphere, and plants. Classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), PAEs can enter human and animal organisms via the digestive tract, respiratory system, and skin, exerting multidirectional harmful effects. An important yet relatively poorly understood issue is the exposure of livestock to these substances. These compounds-primarily di

Buffaloed in Brandenburg: Germany's first brush with foot-and-mouth disease after four decades of freedom.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus is one of the most feared and most consequential pathogens of livestock worldwide. It can be spread rapidly by the transboundary movement of animals, animal products, and by-products. In January 2025, Germany detected its first FMD outbreak since 1988 in extensively reared water buffalo on a small farm in the state of Brandenburg, directly outside Berlin, the federal capital. Immediate control measures including a standstill for movements of susceptible animals and pre-emptive culling were implemented by the veterinary authorities. Whole-genome sequencing ide

Screening and Therapeutic Efficacy of Topical Agents for Teat Hyperkeratosis in Dairy Cows.

In dairy cows, teat keratinization occurs where keratinized tissue rings form around teat tips (opening). Manifesting as skin damage in mechanically milked dairy cows, keratinization presents as dry, rough, pale, or milky-white keratinous protrusions around teat orifices and progresses via the combined effects of mechanical stress, management practices, host genetics, environmental influences, and nutritional metabolism. The teat hole is the first physiological barrier protecting the mammary glands from external pathogen invasion. Most mastitis cases are caused by pathogens invading the mammar

Elevated risk of hepatitis E virus infection among sheep smallholders in Xinjiang, China.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that infects both humans and domestic animals. Although HEV has been detected in sheep, the risks of transmission along the food chain via the mutton industry chain remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to assess the occupational risk of HEV infection among sheep industry workers. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among sheep workers in various settings, including smallholder farms, slaughterhouses, and retail markets. Serum samples from these workers, as well as from individuals in the general population, were collected and

Seroprevalence and potential risk factors of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia in the Huambo province of Angola.

From June to September 2023, we performed a cross-sectional study to estimate the seroprevalence of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia in the Huambo province of Angola; the study also characterized associated risk factors. We sampled 142 herds belonging to livestock farmers in four municipalities (Caála, Longonjo, Bailundo, and Mungo). A competitive ELISA approach was used to detect the presence of antibodies against Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides (Mmm) in 1647 cattle. Herd-level seropositivity was determined using a threshold that accounted for test measurement uncertainty in the labo
