Leg fat-to-total fat ratio improves waist-to-height ratio for discriminating metabolic syndrome: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether regional fat distribution or skeletal muscle mass provides incremental discriminative value for metabolic syndrome (MetS) beyond the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in a nationally representative Korean population. METHODS: Data from 15,838 adults in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2008-2011 who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were analyzed. Ten anthropometric indices were compared using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Incremental discriminative value was evaluated using multivariable logistic re

The Surgical Waist: Defining the Zones of the Waist via Selective Liposuction or Fat Grafting to Improve the Female Silhouette.

BACKGROUND: An "hourglass" waist is often valued as a sign of health and beauty. Despite this, methods to achieve the 3-dimensional anatomy and aesthetics of the waist remain underexplored. Selective liposuction or fat grafting of the waist transition aesthetic unit influences shape, depth, and proportions, regardless of adjunct surgical techniques to reduce the transverse plane of the waist. This study describes a technique using selective liposuction or fat grafting to refine the waist. METHODS: The primary author's technique using selective liposuction or fat grafting is described. Prospective analysis of adiposity metrics for complicated acute colonic diverticulitis: Should WSES Classification and visceral adiposity be integrated for predictive analyses?

BACKGROUND: Colonic diverticulitis is correlated with age, body mass index (BMI), and increased visceral or subcutaneous fat. Obesity contributes to diverticulosis, diverticulitis and its complications onset, as visceral fat activates inflammatory pathways that exacerbate these conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of visceral adiposity and BMI on complications of acute colonic diverticulitis. METHOD: A prospective cohort study was conducted on patients with acute diverticulitis admitted to the general surgery ward of a university hospital in Istanbul from Septembe

Muscle Strength, Lipid Metabolism and Hepatic Steatosis Are Improved with Ursolic Acid Treatment in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

Background/Objectives: The prevalence of obesity globally has increased steadily in the past decades. Obesity, sarcopenic obesity (SO) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) commonly coexist. Ursolic acid (UA), a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid, has demonstrated potential anti-obesity properties. This study was designed to evaluate the anti-obesity efficacy of UA in a mouse model of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity, with a particular focus on its impact on muscle function and NAFLD. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice (6 weeks old) were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 20 per group): a

The Role of Exclusive Autologous Lipotransfer in Non-Irradiated Breasts After Mastectomy.

Background/Objectives: Autologous fat grafting (AFT) has become a widely used technique in breast reconstruction, offering natural aesthetics, tissue integration, and patient satisfaction. However, its clinical outcomes require comparison with implant-based reconstruction (IBR), the most common method in clinical practice. While AFT provides a more natural appearance and avoids foreign body-related complications, issues such as fat resorption, procedural variability, and oncological concerns necessitate further investigation. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly int

Clinical impact of visceral adiposity on long-term mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Although visceral adiposity increases cardiovascular risk in the general population, the obesity paradox has been reported in critically ill patients. However, evidence for its prognostic role in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is limited. This study evaluated the prognostic implications of visceral adiposity in patients who underwent CABG using computed tomography-based measurement of visceral fat. METHODS: A total of 2810 patients who underwent CABG from 2007 to 2017 were analyzed. The study population was classified into 3 groups acco

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor additively ameliorate hepatic steatosis through different mechanisms of action in high-fat diet-fed mice.

AIM: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors suppress the inactivation of incretin hormones and lower blood glucose levels by inhibiting DPP-4 function. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors lower blood glucose levels in an insulin-independent manner by inhibiting renal reabsorption of glucose. DPP-4 and SGLT2 inhibitors each have the potential to improve hepatic steatosis; however, their combined effects remain unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of the combination of these drugs on hepatic steatosis using high-fat diet-fed mice. METHOD: C57BL/6J male mice were fed

Increased capacity to maintain glucose homeostasis in a transgenic mouse expressing human but not mouse growth hormone with developing high-fat diet-related insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis and adipose dysfunction.

The objective was to assess the potential differential effects of human versus mouse growth hormone in vivo, given that human unlike mouse growth hormone can bind prolactin as well as the growth hormone receptor. To this end, a transgenic CD-1 mouse expressing human but not mouse growth hormone was generated, and the phenotypes of male mice fed with a regular chow or high-fat diet were assessed. Pancreas and epididymal white adipose tissue gene expression and/or related function were targeted as the pancreas responds to both prolactin and growth hormone receptor signaling, and catabolic effect

Can we HALT obesity following lung transplant? A Dietitian- and Physiotherapy-directed pilot intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Unintentional weight gain, overweight and obesity following solid organ transplantation (SOT) are well-established and linked to morbidity and mortality risk factors. No interventional studies aimed at prevention have been undertaken among lung transplant (LTx) recipients. The combination of group education and telephone coaching is effective in the general population but is untested among SOT cohorts. METHODS: A non-randomized, interventional pilot study was conducted among new LTx recipients. The control group received standard care. In addition to standard care, the intervent

Effects of a High-Intensity Exercise Program on Weight Regain and Cardio-metabolic Profile after 3 Years of Bariatric Surgery: A Randomized Trial.

Weight regain is one of the most common problems in the long-term after bariatric surgery. It is unknown if high-intensity exercise programs applied in late phases of post-surgical follow-up could counteract this trend. After a 3-year follow-up, 21 patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy were randomized into an exercise group (EG, n = 11), that performed a 5-month supervised exercise program, and a control group (CG, n = 10), that followed the usual care. Body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, glycaemia and blood cholesterol were evaluated before and after the intervention. Finally, the EG

Lipoadenoma of the Parathyroid Gland: Characterization of an Institutional Series Spanning 28 Years.

Parathyroid lipoadenomas (PLAs) are rare tumors, and case descriptions are limited, < 80 to date. As a consequence, scarce information regarding the etiology of these enigmatic lesions is available. We searched our departmental pathology database for PLAs diagnosed between 1992 and 2020, reexamined the histology of each case, and recorded clinical parameters from the patients' medical charts. As the diagnostic criteria of this lesion vary over this time period, we defined PLA as an enlarged parathyroid gland with > 50% fat on histologic examination with preoperative evidence of primary hyperpa

Muscle metabolic reprogramming underlies the resistance of liver fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP)-null mice to high-fat feeding-induced decline in exercise capacity.

Liver fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP) binds long-chain fatty acids with high affinity and is abundantly expressed in the liver and small intestine. Although LFABP is thought to function in intracellular lipid trafficking, studies of LFABP-null (LFABP-/-) mice have also indicated a role in regulating systemic energy homeostasis. We and others have reported that LFABP-/- mice become more obese than wildtype (WT) mice upon high-fat feeding. Here, we show that despite increased body weight and fat mass, LFABP-/- mice are protected from a high-fat feeding-induced decline in exercise capacity, di

Dietary choline supplementation attenuated high-fat diet-induced inflammation through regulation of lipid metabolism and suppression of NFκB activation in juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii).

The present study aimed to investigate whether dietary choline can regulate lipid metabolism and suppress NFκB activation and, consequently, attenuate inflammation induced by a high-fat diet in black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii). An 8-week feeding trial was conducted on fish with an initial weight of 8·16 ± 0·01 g. Five diets were formulated: control, low-fat diet (11 %); HFD, high-fat diet (17 %); and HFD supplemented with graded levels of choline (3, 6 or 12 g/kg) termed HFD + C1, HFD + C2 and HFD + C3, respectively. Dietary choline decreased lipid content in whole body and tissues.

Utilizing Untargeted Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry To Profile Changes in the Gut Metabolome Following Biliary Diversion Surgery.

Obesity and obesity-related disorders are a global epidemic affecting over 10% of the world's population. Treatment of these diseases has become increasingly challenging and expensive. The most effective and durable treatment for Class III obesity (body mass index ≥35 kg/m2) is bariatric surgery, namely, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy. These procedures are associated with increased circulating bile acids, molecules that not only facilitate intestinal fat absorption but are also potent hormones regulating numerous metabolic pathways. We recently reported on a no
