NonREM Disorders of Arousal and Related Parasomnias: an Updated Review.

Parasomnias are abnormal behaviors and/or experiences emanating from or associated with sleep typically manifesting as motor movements of varying semiology. We discuss mainly nonrapid eye movement sleep and related parasomnias in this article. Sleepwalking (SW), sleep terrors (ST), confusional arousals, and related disorders result from an incomplete dissociation of wakefulness from nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Conditions that provoke repeated cortical arousals, and/or promote sleep inertia, lead to NREM parasomnias by impairing normal arousal mechanisms. Changes in the cyclic alternati

Host Plants Affect the Foraging Success of Two Parasitoids that Attack Light Brown Apple Moth Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

The light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana is a key pest of wine grapes in Australia. Two parasitoids, Dolichogenidea tasmanica and Therophilus unimaculatus, attack the larval stage of this pest. D. tasmanica is dominant in vineyards, whereas T. unimaculatus is mainly active in native vegetation. We sought to understand why they differ in their use of habitats. Plants are a major component of habitats of parasitoids, and herbivore-infested plants influence parasitoid foraging efficiency by their architecture and emission of volatile chemicals. We investigated how different plant species

The effect of toe trimming on behavior, mobility, toe length and other indicators of welfare in tom turkeys.

Society is increasingly concerned about the welfare of animals kept for food production, for this reason, invasive procedures such as toe trimming in turkeys must be studied to assess the corresponding welfare implications and to ensure such procedures are acceptable for continued use. To this end, research was conducted to evaluate the welfare effects of toe trimming on toms raised to 140 d. The study used 306 Hybrid Converter toms, half of which were toe trimmed using a Microwave Claw Processor (MCP) which group are denoted T, and half of which were sham treated but not trimmed, which group

Winter Activity and Aboveground Hybridization Between the Two Biotypes of the West Nile Virus Vector Culex pipiens.

Culex (Cx.) pipiens mosquitoes are important vectors of West Nile virus (WNV). In Europe, the species Cx. pipiens consists of two biotypes, pipiens and molestus, which are morphologically identical, but differ in behavior. Typical behavior of the molestus biotype is the ability to remain active during winter, whereas the pipiens biotype enters diapause. The current paradigm is that the two biotypes occur sympatrically in southern Europe, but occur in isolated above- and belowground populations in northern Europe. In northern Europe, hybridization between biotypes is considered to be low becaus

Involvement of the opioid system in the orexigenic and hedonic effects of melanin-concentrating hormone.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) exerts an orexigenic effect that resembles that of opioids, suggesting that the MCH and opioid systems could interact in controlling the food intake behavior. Three series of experiments were conducted in male Wistar rats: 1) to test the ability of the κ-, μ-, and δ-opioid receptor antagonists binaltorphimine (nor-BNI-κ), β-funaltrexamine (β-FNA-μ), and naltrindole (NTI-δ), respectively, to block the stimulating effects of MCH on food intake; 2) to verify the ability of MCH to induce a positive hedonic response to a sweet stimulus when injected into the nucl

Insulin signaling and addiction.

Across species, the brain evolved to respond to natural rewards such as food and sex. These physiological responses are important for survival, reproduction and evolutionary processes. It is no surprise, therefore, that many of the neural circuits and signaling pathways supporting reward processes are conserved from Caenorhabditis elegans to Drosophilae, to rats, monkeys and humans. The central role of dopamine (DA) in encoding reward and in attaching salience to external environmental cues is well recognized. Less widely recognized is the role of reporters of the "internal environment", parti

Sex-biased expression of enteroendocrine cell-derived hormones contributes to higher fat storage in Drosophila females.

Enteroendocrine (EE) cells in the Drosophila gut produce and release multiple factors, including Allatostatin A (AstA), Allatostatin C (AstC), neuropeptide F (NPF), tachykinin (Tk), Diuretic hormone 31 (Dh31), Bursicon, CCHamide 1, CCHamide 2, and short neuropeptide F. Collectively, these peptides ensure that physiology (e.g., fat storage, fluid balance) and behavior (e.g., feeding, sleep) are coordinated with environmental factors such as nutrient quantity and quality. Despite notable sex differences in physiology and behavior, it remains unclear whether the regulation and function of these E

Stress alters hypothalamic gene expression in adolescent male Golden hamsters.

In Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), a two-week exposure to chronic social stress in adolescence causes acceleration of agonistic behavior, enhanced adult aggression, impaired waiting impulsivity, and higher food intake, body fat, and long-term increased body weight. In adult rodents, stress is accompanied by widespread alterations in gene expression in the brain. As stress is a potent modulator of both gene expression and behavior, the present research investigated possible mechanistic-related transcriptomic changes in the lateral, dorsomedial, and arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus ca

Combined sedentarism and high-fat diet induce early signs of kidney injury in C57BL/6J mice.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive disorder marked by a decline in kidney function. Obesity and sedentary behavior contribute to the development of CKD, though mechanisms by which this occurs are poorly understood. This knowledge gap is worsened by the lack of a reliable murine CKD model that does not rely on injury, toxin, or gene deletion to induce a reduction in kidney function. High-fat diet (HFD) feeding alone is insufficient to cause reduced kidney function until later in life. Here, we used a small mouse cage (SMC), a recently developed mouse model of sedentariness, to study

Multifaceted skeletal effects of sevelamer carbonate in a secondary hyperparathyroidism model.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperphosphatemia leads to abnormal mineralization of bones and soft tissues in patients with chronic kidney disease-induced secondary hyperparathyroidism (CKD-SHPT). Sevelamer lowers phosphate levels by binding to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal system, forming new bone and reducing the risk of renal osteodystrophy and fracture. However, the influence of sevelamer carbonate (SevC) on bone microarchitecture, material qualities, and mechanical behavior is unknown in CKD-SHPT conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We utilized a rat model of CKD-induced hyperphosphatemia by fe

Plant-based meat analogues enhance the gastrointestinal motility function and appetite of mice by specific volatile compounds and peptides.

Eating behavior is critical for maintaining energy homeostasis. Previous studies have found that plant-based meat analogues increased diet intake in mice compared with animal meat under a free feeding mode, however the reasons were unclear. To explore the underlying mechanisms of plant-based meat analogues increasing diet intake, mice were fed animal or plant-based pork and beef analogue diets, respectively. Biochemical and histological analyses were performed to evaluate appetite-regulating hormones and gastrointestinal motility function. Peptiomics and GC-IMS were applied to identify key sub

Juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Batten disease): current insights.

The present review is focused on juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL; Batten disease) due to a mutation in CLN3. Functional vision impairment occurring around 5-6 years of age is the first symptom in more than 80% of patients. Approximately 2 years later (though sometimes simultaneously), obvious signs of cognitive impairment appear. Behavior problems can occur in advance, especially in boys. These include anxious and depressed mood, aggressive behavior, and hallucinations, and even psychotic symptoms. Following the teens, severe dementia is present, including loss of memory, attenti

Experimental evaluation of herbivory on live plant seedlings by the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris L. in the presence and absence of soil surface litter.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested that the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris might act as a seedling predator by ingesting emerging seedlings, and individuals were observed damaging fresh leaves of various plant species in the field. To evaluate the significance of herbivore behavior of L. terrestris for plant and earthworm performance we exposed 23- to 33-days-old seedlings of six plant species to earthworms in two microcosm experiments. Plants belonged to the three functional groups grasses, non-leguminous herbs, and legumes. Leaf damage, leaf mortality, the number of leaves as well as morta

Functional implications of species differences in the size and morphology of the isthmo optic nucleus (ION) in birds.

In birds, there is a retinofugal projection from the brain to the retina originating from the isthmo optic nucleus (ION) in the midbrain. Despite a large number of anatomical, physiological and histochemical studies, the function of this retinofugal system remains unclear. Several functions have been proposed including: gaze stabilization, pecking behavior, dark adaptation, shifting attention, and detection of aerial predators. This nucleus varies in size and organization among some species, but the relative size and morphology of the ION has not been systematically studied. Here, we present a

Functional morphological study on the tongue of the adult Egyptian geese (Alopochen egyptiacus).

BACKGROUND: The present investigation represents the first attempt to fully describe the morphology of the geese tongue. Tongue has an essential biological role in all vertebrates, it is considered a prehensive organ, as it is responsible for food collection, also aids in mastication and swallowing. Since the tongue morphology was varied among bird species linked to different reasons such as beak shape, environment, feeding habits and type of diet, that's why the purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of the geese tongue in detail concerning its function. METHODOLOGY: Eleven

Investigating potential sand fly vectors after the first reported outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by species of the genus Leishmania, which are transmitted through the bite of infected female sand flies. Since the first reported outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ghana, in 1999, there has been limited published information on its vectors and reservoir hosts there. Previous studies have shown strong dominance of the sand fly genus Sergentomyia over the genus Phlebotomus in Ghana. Thus the aim of this study was to determine the possible sand fly vector species in Ghana, as well as their human-feeding behavior, from the time of the f
