Molecular biology of surface colonization by Listeria monocytogenes: an additional facet of an opportunistic Gram-positive foodborne pathogen.

The opportunistic and facultative intracellular pathogenic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes causes a rare but severe foodborne disease called listeriosis, the outcome of which can be fatal. The infection cycle and key virulence factors are now well characterized in this species. Nonetheless, this knowledge has not prevented the re-emergence of listeriosis, as recently reported in several European countries. Listeria monocytogenes is particularly problematic in the food industry since it can survive and multiply under conditions frequently used for food preservation. Moreover, this foodborne pa

Antibiotic usage in animals: impact on bacterial resistance and public health.

Antibiotic use whether for therapy or prevention of bacterial diseases, or as performance enhancers will result in antibiotic resistant micro-organisms, not only among pathogens but also among bacteria of the endogenous microflora of animals. The extent to which antibiotic use in animals will contribute to the antibiotic resistance in humans is still under much debate. In addition to the veterinary use of antibiotics, the use of these agents as antimicrobial growth promoters (AGP) greatly influences the prevalence of resistance in animal bacteria and a poses risk factor for the emergence of an

Detection of Gluten in Gluten-Free Labeled Restaurant Food: Analysis of Crowd-Sourced Data.

INTRODUCTION: Adherence to a gluten-free (GF) diet is the mainstay of therapy for celiac disease. Until now, those wishing to avoid gluten in restaurants had to rely on menu labels, word of mouth, intuition, and restaurant workers' advice, with a relative dearth of supporting data. We used crowd-sourced data from users of a portable gluten detection device to estimate rates of, and identify risk factors for, gluten contamination of supposed GF restaurant foods. METHODS: We analyzed data from a portable gluten detection device (Nima), collected across the United States during an 18-month perio

Warship wrecks and their munition cargos as a threat to the marine environment and humans: The V 1302 "JOHN MAHN" from World War II.

In addition to endangering sea traffic, cable routes, and wind farms, sunken warship wrecks with dangerous cargo, fuel, or munitions on board may emerge as point sources for environmental damage. Energetic compounds such as TNT (which could leak from these munitions) are known for their toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. These compounds may cause potential adverse effects on marine life via contamination of the marine ecosystem, and their entry into the marine and human food chain could directly affect human health. To ascertain the impending danger of an environmental catastrophe po

Diversity of Salmonella serotypes from humans, food, domestic animals and wildlife in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella is an important human pathogen in Australia and annual case rates continue to increase. In addition to foodborne exposures, cases have been associated with animal and contaminated environment contact. However, routine surveillance in Australia has tended to focus on humans and food, with no reported attempts to collate and compare Salmonella data from a wider range of potential sources of exposure. METHODS: Salmonella data from humans, food, animals and environments were collated from a range of surveillance and diagnostic sources in New South Wales (NSW). Data were cat

Efficient resuscitation of early-stage viable but non-culturable cells of Vibrio cholerae using treatment with proteolytic enzymes.

UNLABELLED: Vibrio cholerae, the etiological agent of cholera, is ubiquitous in environmental brackish waters. Exposure to low water temperatures induces the bacterium to enter a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. In this study, a stepwise decrease in water temperature to 4°C was found to delay the transition to the non-culturable state compared to an abrupt temperature drop, suggesting that V. cholerae cells partially adapt to low temperatures. V. cholerae VBNC cells maintained at 4°C gradually lost their ability to revert to a culturable state. However, VBNC cells in the early stage of

Influence of habitats and physicochemical factors on trophic transfer processes of antibiotics in a freshwater ecosystem: Application of stable isotopes and human health risks.

Habitats of species and physicochemical factors are of great importance in determining the trophic transfer of contaminants in freshwater ecosystems. There is little information on how multiple physicochemical factors and habitats influence the trophic transfer of antibiotics in freshwater food webs. This study investigated the concentrations of 7 sulfonamides (SAs), 4 fluoroquinolones (FQs), 4 tetracyclines (TCs) and 2 macrolides (MLs) in the Lake Dianshan food web. Stable isotope analysis (SIA), and mathematical models were used to assign trophic levels and distinguish between the benthic fo

Listeria monocytogenes in Cooked Chicken: Detection of an Outbreak in the United Kingdom (2016 to 2017) and Analysis of L. monocytogenes from Unrelated Monitoring of Foods (2013 to 2017).

ABSTRACT: In England and Wales, Public Health England applies whole genome sequencing to cultures of Listeria monocytogenes recovered from human cases of listeriosis, foods, and food production environments. Following the routine inspection of a small retailer in February and March 2016, two unopened packs of cooked chicken produced by the same manufacturer were found to be contaminated with L. monocytogenes at levels of 340 and 20 CFU/g. A public recall of this product was issued in March 2016. Early in 2017, a less than five single-nucleotide polymorphism single-linkage cluster was detected

Effect of environmental factors on expression of staphylococcal enterotoxin genes.

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) secreted by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) can cause foodborne disease, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and even death. Regulation of SE expression is related to accessory gene regulators (Agr). It is important to reveal which environmental factors influence regulation of SE expression to prevent SE food poisoning outbreak. Hence, natural environmental factors which may have an impact on SE expression were selected, such as temperature, food types, strains, and competing strains. Seven strains of S. aureus carrying different SE genes were collected from the

Artificial selection for resistance to copper and off-target physiological and behavioral effects in Drosophila melanogaster.

Pollution resulting from mining, industry, and agriculture has played an important role in shaping the evolution of diverse organisms. Heavy metal contamination is of particular concern due to the health effects for humans and cross-tolerance effects that may influence pesticide resistance. We used a replicated artificial selection approach to examine the response to copper selection in Drosophila melanogaster collected from a retired mine and active fruit orchard. We tracked shifts in resistance to the target trait, adult copper resistance, as well as off-target effects on cadmium and lead re

Co-exposure to polystyrene microplastics and glyphosate induces gut microbiota dysbiosis and cognitive impairment in honeybees.

Microplastics, as emerging persistent environmental contaminants, can act as vectors for the absorption of other pollutants in ecosystems, such as pesticide residues. However, the combined toxicological effects of microplastics and pesticides on pollinators remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the toxicity of polystyrene microplastics (PS) and glyphosate (GLY), both individually and in combination, in honeybees (Apis mellifera). While no significant changes in body weight gain or food consumption were observed after 20 days of exposure, co-exposure to PS and GLY significantly increased
