Genetic basis of leg health and its relationship with body weight in purebred turkey lines.

The aims of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters for leg and foot health and mobility in purebred turkey lines and their genetic correlations with BW. Traits were gait score (GS) as an overall measure of leg health, footpad dermatitis (FPD), and 2 skeletal leg health traits, namely, valgus and varus deformities (VVD) and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD). Data from 4 different lines, comprising 3 yr of phenotypic records and 4 yr of pedigree information per line, were used. The sex average BW for the lines at 18 wk ranged from 19.1 kg (line A) to 12.4 kg (line D). The prevalence of VV

Early results of an intraosseous device for arthrodesis of the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint.

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the hallux metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint is commonly done as a primary procedure either to correct severe hallux valgus deformities or for rheumatoid arthritis, hallux rigidus, in patients with neuromuscular disorders and as a salvage procedure for failed bunion surgery or infection. Prominent metalwork frequently can cause soft tissue impingement and thus require removal. In contrast, osteosynthesis with a completely intraosseous implant has the advantage of less damage to the periosteal circulation. We describe a surgical technique and the early results of arthro

A Rare Case of Acroangiodermatitis Associated with a Congenital Arteriovenous Malformation (Stewart-Bluefarb Syndrome) in a Young Veteran: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Acroangiodermatitis (AD) is a rare angioproliferative disease manifesting with cutaneous lesions clinically similar to Kaposi's sarcoma. AD is a benign hyperplasia of preexisting vasculature and may be associated with acquired or congenital arteriovenous malformations (AVM), or severe chronic venous insufficiency (because of hypostasis, elevated venous pressure, arteriovenous shunting). Stewart-Bluefarb syndrome is the rare syndrome in which AD is associated with a congenital AVM. We present the case of a young veteran with a painful, chronic nonhealing ulcer and ipsilateral popliteal artery o

Proximal metatarsal osteotomy in hallux valgus correction: a comparison of crescentic and chevron procedures.

We retrospectively evaluated the results of 50 hallux valgus reconstructions in 36 patients for moderate to severe deformities, performed by the senior author (F. M. T.). All feet were treated at the metatarsophalangeal joint with a distal soft tissue realignment. The first 25 feet were corrected proximally with a crescentic osteotomy fixed with an AO screw; these cases had an average follow-up of more than 5 years (range, 40-141 months). The second 25 feet underwent a basal osteotomy with a proximally directed chevron osteotomy; these cases had an average follow-up of 21.4 months (range, 12-3

[Septic arthritis in rheumatoid polyarthritis. 24 cases and review of the literature].

Twenty-four cases of septic arthritis in rheumatoid arthritis patients were compared with 99 cases of septic arthritis in patients without rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, 238 previously published cases of septic arthritis with rheumatoid arthritis were analyzed. Fifteen percent of our patients with septic arthritis had rheumatoid arthritis, which was typically of long duration (mean 15 years), erosive, and seropositive. Fifty-four per cent (28% in the literature) and 9% of patients with and without rheumatoid arthritis, respectively, had pyarthrosis of multiple joints. The knee represented

Idiopathic Congenital Dislocation of the Knee: Case Series of Spontaneous Reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic congenital dislocation of the knee (CDK) represents a distinct clinical category. Grade III CDK, defined as knee flexion <30° has a poor prognosis. The standard of care is "as soon as possible" manipulation and casting. Waiting for spontaneous reduction is not regarded as an accepted treatment strategy. The purpose of this study is to report on the occurrence of spontaneous reduction in idiopathic grade III CDK. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study included consecutive cases of idiopathic CDK treated from April 2020 to August 2025. Inclusion criteria w

Anatomical Comparative Study of Cutaneous Nerve Injury Risk in Minimally Invasive Calcaneal Osteotomy: Four-Quadrant Sliding Osteotomy vs the Rising Sun Technique.

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal osteotomy plays a central role in the correction of hindfoot axis deformities, with minimally invasive techniques becoming increasingly established in recent years. For minimally invasive calcaneal osteotomy (MICO), V-shaped osteotomy and the 4-quadrant sliding osteotomy (4Q) are widely used techniques. Toepfer et al recently introduced the so-called rising sun (RS) technique for MICO. In this surgical technique, perforating drillings are performed instead of a sliding osteotomy. The present cadaveric study aimed to compare the risk of cutaneous nerve injury between the R

Union Outcomes in Medial and Central Column Tarsometatarsal Fusions: Single vs Multiple Joints.

BACKGROUND: Tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint arthrodesis is essential for managing surgical management of severe bunion deformities, complex midfoot trauma, and osteoarthritis. Various fixation methods and bone grafting types have been described, but the impact of the number of joints fused on union rates remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether fusing multiple joints affects arthrodesis rates and to compare union outcomes among different fixation constructs and grafting techniques. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of 582 TMT fusions, comparing single-

INTRODUCTION: Musculocontractural Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (mcEDS) is a rare autosomal recessive connective tissue disorder caused by systemic depletion of dermatan sulfate. Symptoms characteristic of mcEDS include multiple contractures, fragile skin with subcutaneous bleeding, and hypermobile joints, which suggest difficulty in perioperative management. However, safe surgical techniques and perioperative management of this disorder remain unknown because of its rarity. We report a patient with mcEDS who developed endometrial cancer and underwent surgery, with emphasis on perioperative managemen

Effects of custom insoles for symptomatic hallux valgus: protocol for a sham-controlled randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hallux valgus (HV) is one of the most prevalent forefoot deformities, and its frequency increases with age, reaching nearly 23% in adulthood (females are usually more affected). Studies on customised insoles and orthoses for HV showed inconclusive results. There is no consensus in literature regarding the ideal insole or length of use for pain relief or functional improvement in individuals with HV. This study will assess the effects of a customised insole with retrocapital bar associated with an infracapital bar of the first metatarsal on pain and function of individuals with sy

An electroceutical approach enhances myelination via upregulation of lipid biosynthesis in the dorsal root ganglion.

As the myelin sheath is crucial for neuronal saltatory conduction, loss of myelin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) leads to demyelinating neuropathies causing muscular atrophy, numbness, foot deformities and paralysis. Unfortunately, few interventions are available for such neuropathies, because previous pharmaceuticals have shown severe side effects and failed in clinical trials. Therefore, exploring new strategies to enhance PNS myelination is critical to provide solution for such intractable diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of electrical stimulation (ES) to

Enhancement of evaluating flatfoot on a weight-bearing lateral radiograph of the foot with U-Net based semantic segmentation on the long axis of tarsal and metatarsal bones in an active learning manner.

Robust labeling for semantic segmentation in radiographs is labor-intensive. No study has evaluated flatfoot-related deformities using semantic segmentation with U-Net on weight-bearing lateral radiographs. Here, we evaluated the robustness, accuracy enhancement, and efficiency of automated measurements for flatfoot-related angles using semantic segmentation in an active learning manner. A total of 300 consecutive weight-bearing lateral radiographs of the foot were acquired. The first 100 radiographs were used as the test set, and the following 200 radiographs were used as the training and val
