Honeybees represent one of the most important insect species we have, particularly due to their pollinating services. Several emerging fungal and bacterial diseases, however, are currently threatening honeybees without known mechanisms of pathogenicity. Therefore, the aim of the current work was to investigate the seasonal (winter, spring, summer, and autumn) fungal and bacterial distribution through different gut segments (crop, midgut, ileum, and rectum). This was done from two hives in Norway. Our main finding was that bacteria clustered by gut segments, while fungi were clustered by season

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are a group of chronic autoinflammatory diseases including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Although the molecular mechanisms governing the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal inflammation are not completely clear, the main factors are presumed to be genetic predisposition, environmental exposure, and the intestinal microbiome. Hitherto, most of the studies focusing on the role of the microbiome studied the action and effect of bacteria. However, the intestinal microbiome comprises other members of the microbial community as well, namely, fungi, protozoa,

The human microbiome is a rich environment consisting of bacteria, fungi and other commensal microorganisms of the gut, mucosa and skin. The functional role of the gut microbiome includes facilitation in metabolism of macronutrients, maturation of the immune system, and production of pro- or anti-inflammatory signaling molecules and peptides. The identification of these resident organisms has brought about a new understanding of disease processes. Nevertheless, more questions remain regarding the interactions within the microbiome, its interactions with the host, and its contributions to the p

Pulmonary mucormycosis is a relatively rare pulmonary fungal disease, which is difficult to diagnose early and lacks effective treatment. It is seen in patients with hematological malignancies, diabetes mellitus, and immunocompromised states. The diagnosis depends primarily on the detection of fungi in lung tissue. Here, we present a case of a 52-year-old male who has type 2 diabetes mellitus and a past history of treated pulmonary tuberculosis. Clinical diagnosis is difficult in pulmonary mucormycosis, and early diagnosis is needed for this life-threatening infection. Histopathological examin

This mini-review focuses on leishmanicidal drugs that were sourced from small molecules previously approved for other diseases. The mechanisms of action of these molecules are herein explored, to probe the origins of their inter-species growth inhibitory activities. It is shown how the transversal action of the azoles - fluconazole, posaconazole and itraconazole - in both fungi and Leishmania is due to the occurrence of the same target, lanosterol 14-α-demethylase, in these two groups of species. In turn, the drugs miltefosine and amphotericin B are presented as truly multi-target agents, acti

Crohn's disease (CD) is caused by a trigger, almost certainly enteric infection by one of a multitude of organisms that allows faeces access to the tissues, at which stage the response of individuals predisposed to CD is abnormal. In CD the failure of acute inflammation results in the failure to recruit neutrophils to the inflammatory site, as a consequence of which the clearance of bacteria from the tissues is defective. The retained faecal products result in the characteristic chronic granulomatous inflammation and adaptive immune response. Impaired of digestion of bacteria and fungi by CGD

This review focuses on aspects of antimycotic therapy specific to veterinary medicine. In the first part, drug availability, limited mostly by economic consideration but also by clinical applicability and specific adverse effects, is described for polyenes, 5 fluorocytosine, azoles, echinocandins and terbinafine. In the second part, current knowledge and experience in the treatment of selected fungal infections are overviewed. These mycoses include disseminated mold infections in small animals (dogs and cats) and avian species, upper respiratory tract infections of small animals (sino-nasal an

Mucormycosis is one of the most rapidly progressing and fulminant forms of fungal infection which usually begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses following inhalation of fungal spores. It is caused by organisms of the subphylum Mucormycotina, including genera as Absidia, Mucor, Rhizomucor, and Rhizopus. The incidence of mucormycosis is approximately 1.7 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year. Mucormycosis affecting the maxilla is rare because of rich blood vessel supply of maxillofacial areas although more virulent fungi such as Mucor can overcome this difficulty. The common form of this in

Pathogenic cryptococci are encapsulated yeast that can cause severe meningoencephalitis. Existing therapeutic options are dated and there is a growing need for new alternative antifungal agents for these fungi. Here we report novel inhibition of pathogenic cryptococci by the antimicrobial lectin Scytovirin. Inhibition was most potent against Cryptococcus neoformans var neoformans and C. gattii, with MFC values of 500 nM. Scytovirin binding was localized to the cell wall and shown to affect capsule size and release. No effect was observed on melanization or with cells grown in the presence the

We describe a rare and interesting case of a 37-year-old man who presented with an intermittent fever, progressive cytopenia, and hepatosplenomegaly. Histopathological examination of a bone marrow smear revealed haemophagocytes and intracellular yeast-like Histoplasma capsulatum (H. capsulatum); thus, we prolonged the blood culture duration to detect fungi, and H. capsulatum was detected in the peripheral blood. After the diagnosis of disseminated histoplasmosis, the patient was successfully treated with amphotericin B and symptomatic therapy. This is the first case in southwest China for whic

RATIONALE: Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis (GIM) is a kind of opportunistic fungal infection with poor prognosis. It usually occurs in patients with immune deficiency. We reported a case of immunocompetent male patient.
PATIENT CONCERNS: This patient was presented as abdominal distension and gastrointestinal bleeding.
DIAGNOSES: A variety of hemostatic methods was ineffective to stop the bleeding. The patient finally received laparotomy, and the jejunum lesions were found.
INTERVENTIONS: Pathological examination confirmed it to be gastrointestinal mucormycosis in jejunum.
OUTCOMES: However,

Nasal NK/T cell lymphoma is rare and it easily masquerades as chronic rhinosinusitis. It has a very poor prognosis and hence early diagnosis, although difficult, is necessary for better outcome. We present a case of a 30-year-old man who presented with nasal obstruction, facial oedema and crusts. High-resolution computed tomography found soft tissue in all sinuses and the nasal cavity. Endoscopic biopsy revealed necrotic and inflammatory tissue with fungi on culture. A diagnosis of fungal rhinosinusitis was made but the patient did not respond to antifungal drugs. A histopathology review with

There has been an increase in the occurrence of fungal infections in humans in the recent years due to the discrete use of broad spectrum antibiotics and immunosuppressive therapies. The genus candida is the most frequently found fungi in humans. Candida albicans is a mucosal microbiota although it can cause infections which can be mucosal or life threatening infections in susceptible individuals. Candidiasis is the most common oral opportunistic fungal infection in humans. Candidiasis usually affects oral mucosa (buccal mucosa) and hard palate. Candidiasis affecting gingiva is not so common,

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical state of the larynx and its microbial population in 49 patients examined at the stage of stable condition of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Examination of the larynx was carried out with the use of a rigid laryngoscope having a visual angle of 70 degrees, videofibrolaryngoscopy, and stroboscopy using a «TelePac» videocomplex (Karl Storz, Germany). It was supplemented by the study of the bacteriological and mycological paysage. The acoustic analysis of the voice was performed with the help of the Specta PLUS computer progra

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic infection, caused by pigmented fungi affecting skin and subcutaneous tissues characterized by verrucous nodules or plaques. Fonsecaea pedrosoi and Cladophialophora carrionii are the prevalent agents in the endemic areas. Phoma is an uncommon agent of human infection and involved mainly with phaeohyphomycosis cases. The case of a patient with a history of laceration in foot followed by verrucous aspect and scaly lesions, which had evolved for 27 years is presented. On physical examination disease was clinically compatible with chromoblastomycosis and the microsc

The alternative oxidase (AOX) is an integral monotopic membrane protein located on the inner surface of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Branching from the traditional respiratory chain at the quinone pool, AOX is responsible for cyanide-resistant respiration in plants and fungi, heat generation in thermogenic plants, and survival of parasites, such as Trypanosoma brucei, in the human host. A recently solved AOX structure provides insight into its active site, thereby facilitating rational phytopathogenic and antiparasitic drug design. Here, we describe expression of recombinant AOX using two

Cytotoxicity-guided fractionation of a Guamanian cyanobacterial collection yielded the new compounds amantelides A (1) and B (2). These polyketides are characterized by a 40-membered macrolactone ring consisting of a 1,3-diol and contiguous 1,5-diol units and a tert-butyl substituent. Amantelide A (1) displayed potent cytotoxicity with submicromolar IC₅₀ against HT29 colorectal adenocarcinoma and HeLa cervical carcinoma cell lines. Acetylation of the hydroxy group at C-33 in 2 caused a close to 10-fold decrease in potency. Exhaustive acetylation of the hydroxy groups abrogated the antiprolifer

Coccidioidomycosis is a systemic airborne mycosis that may involve secondarily other organs through systemic dissemination. Fungi Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii are the etiologic agents. The former is ubiquitous from the area of California in North America, and the latter is found elsewhere in the world. Primary cutaneous infection is rare. We present six Mexican male cases, residents of Tijuana B.C. Three of them with primary pulmonary infection and further cutaneous dissemination, and three cases of primary cutaneous coccicioidomycosis. In half the cases C. posadasii was isolated. The

The epidemiology of invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients is rapidly changing. Several of the fungi have worldwide distribution. However, some have specific geographical distribution. Sinocranial aspergillosis, mostly described from countries with temperate climates, occurs mostly in otherwise immunocompetent individuals Most of the systemic fungal pathogens have been associated with central nervous system (CNS) involvement. The major advances in CNS fungal infections are in the pathobiology, new diagnostic tools, and new therapies. In spite of these developments, there is s

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is associated with a state of immunosuppression characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia as well as B and T lymphocyte dysfunction. Though opportunistic infections are common in CLL patients, particularly after treatment, reports of infections by endemic dimorphic fungi are very few. Here we report a case of pulmonary blastomycosis in a CLL patient who initially presented with an indolent pulmonary mass lesion. The pulmonary lesions progressed rapidly over a two-week period. The diagnosis was established by transbronchial lung biopsy. He was treated with Amphot
