Associations between DSM-IV mental disorders and subsequent COPD diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: COPD and mental disorder comorbidity is commonly reported, although findings are limited by substantive weaknesses. Moreover, few studies investigate mental disorder as a risk for COPD onset. This research aims to investigate associations between current (12-month) DSM-IV mental disorders and COPD, associations between temporally prior mental disorders and subsequent COPD diagnosis, and cumulative effect of multiple mental disorders. METHODS: Data were collected using population surveys of 19 countries (n=52,095). COPD diagnosis was assessed by self-report of physician's diagnosis

Serotonin 2A receptor gene (HTR2A) regulatory variants: possible association with severity of depression symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Our aim was to characterize the association of 2 functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs6311 and rs6314) in the serotonin 2A receptor gene (HTR2A) with severity of depression symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder. These polymorphisms have been shown to be associated with depression symptom severity and response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs in adults with diagnosed depressive disorder. METHODS: Parents of 104 children with autism spectrum disorder rated their children's depressive symptoms using a validated scale based on criteri

Significance of borderline personality-spectrum symptoms among adolescents with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding correlates of borderline personality-spectrum symptoms (BPSS) among adolescents with bipolar disorder (BP). METHODS: Participants were 90 adolescents, 13-19 years of age, who fulfilled DSM-IV-TR criteria for BP using semi-structured diagnostic interviews. BPSS status was ascertained using the Life Problems Inventory which assessed identity confusion, interpersonal problems, impulsivity, and emotional lability. Analyses compared adolescents with "high" versus "low" BPSS based on a median split. RESULTS: Participants with high, relative to low, BPSS were y

Prevalence of lifetime DSM-IV affective disorders among older African Americans, Black Caribbeans, Latinos, Asians and non-Hispanic White people.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to estimate lifetime prevalence of seven psychiatric affective disorders for older non-Hispanic White people, African Americans, Caribbean Black people, Latinos, and Asian Americans and examine demographic, socioeconomic, and immigration correlates of those disorders. Multinutrient supplement as treatment: literature review and case report of a 12-year-old boy with bipolar disorder.

Early-onset bipolar disorder has significant morbidity and mortality. Development of safe, effective treatments to which patients will adhere is critical. Pharmacologic interventions for childhood bipolar spectrum disorders are limited and are associated with significant risk for adverse events. Diet and nutrition research suggests vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are important underpinnings of general physical and mental health; furthermore, they may even be useful in treating mood dysregulation by providing a more favorable risk-benefit ratio than contemporary psychotropic agents. Religious participation and DSM-IV disorders among older African Americans: findings from the National Survey of American Life.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the religious correlates of psychiatric disorders. DESIGN: The analysis is based on the National Survey of American Life (NSAL). The African American sample of the NSAL is a national representative sample of households with at least one African American adult 18 years or over. This study uses the older African American subsample (N = 837). METHODS: Religious correlates of selected measures of lifetime Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) psychiatric disorders (i.e., panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, generaliz

Anxiety-related disorders: An overview.

Anxiety-related disorders are common in the child and adolescent population. They cause significant distress, which can affect social, emotional, family and academic functioning. They frequently present in general paediatric and primary care settings. Comprehensive assessment should include the child as well as parent and family functioning because anxiety-related disorders in other family members are common and, if untreated, can affect outcomes for the child. There are good evidence-based psychological interventions available, which should be the first line of treatment offered; accessing ap

The neurobiology of social phobia.

Although Social Phobia has been recognised for centuries in comparison with other anxiety disorders, relatively little work has been done to understand its neural basis. The present review attempts to redress this balance by giving an overview of the current state of knowledge in this disorder. By putting together data from the treatment responses to specific agents, the effects of chemical challenges which have been used in other anxiety disorders and by reviewing data on central and peripheral neurotransmitter and endochrine abnormalities, it is possible to begin to generate some potentially

How much or how often? Examining the screening properties of the DSM cross-cutting symptom measure in a youth population-based sample.

BACKGROUND: The DSM Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure (DSM-XC) allows for assessing multiple psychopathological domains. However, its capability to screen for mental disorders in a population-based sample and the impact of adverbial framings (intensity and frequency) on its performance are unknown. METHODS: The study was based on cross-sectional data from the 1993 Pelotas birth cohort in Brazil. Participants with completed DSM-XC and structured diagnostic interviews (n = 3578, aged 22, 53.6% females) were included. Sensitivity, specificity, positive (LR+), and negative (LR-) likelihood ra

Prevalence of anxiety disorders in Latin America: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of anxiety disorders among the adult population in Latin America (LATAM) and its association with development indicators is insufficiently characterised. We estimated pooled regional, country, and sex-specific prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in LATAM based on International Classification of Diseases (ICD) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria. Additionally, we examined the association between its prevalence and four country-level development indicators: Human Development Index (HDI), income inequality (Gini coefficient), Gender

Sleep Complaints Among Adults With Major Depressive Episode Are Associated With Increased Risk of Incident Psychiatric Disorders: Results From a Population-Based 3-Year Prospective Study.

Objective: Sleep alterations have been suggested as a cause and consequence of psychiatric disorders. In this context, we evaluated the incidence of psychiatric disorders following sleep complaints in adults with major depressive episode (MDE). Methods: In a large, nationally representative 3-year prospective survey, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions conducted in 2001-2002 (Wave 1) and 2004-2005 (Wave 2), we used structural equation modeling to examine shared and specific effects of trouble falling asleep, early morning awakening, and hypersomnia on incidence

Long-term work disability due to type I and II bipolar disorder: findings of a six-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. However, the prevalence and predictors of long-term work disability among patients with type I and II BD have scarcely been studied. We investigated the clinical predictors of long-term work disability among patients with BD. METHODS: The Jorvi Bipolar Study (JoBS) is a naturalistic prospective cohort study (n = 191) of adult psychiatric in- and out-patients with DSM-IV type I and II BD in three Finnish cities. Within JoBS we examined the prevalence and predictors of disability pension being granted during

Personality traits in social phobia.

The purpose was to assess personality traits in subjects with a DSM-IV diagnosis of social phobia. Thirty-two subjects were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV for Axes I and II disorders (SCID I and II). Personality traits were assessed by means of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP). Current and lifetime axis I co-morbidity was diagnosed in 28% and 53% of the subjects, respectively. In total, 59% had at least one personality disorder and 47% were diagnosed with an avoidant personality disorder. The social phobics scored significantly higher than a Swedish normati
