Combining Follicular Unit Extraction and Scalp Micropigmentation for the Cosmetic Treatment of Alopecias.

Two relatively new modalities, follicular unit extraction (FUE) and scalp micropigmentation have changed the treatment of hair loss, to reduce the number of procedures and the total costs of the hair restoration process. These 2 modalities augment each other when treating patients with thinning hair and balding. The explosion of FUE procedures (which reflected 52.6% of the hair transplant procedures performed in 2016, up from 48.5%) and the appearance of more and more new physicians offering hair restoration technologies employing FUE have caused a 20% annual growth in this industry over the p

A case of Griscelli syndrome.

A hallmark of Griscelli syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is hair hypopigmentation characterized by a silver-gray sheen and the presence of large clusters of pigment unevenly distributed in the hair shaft. Either a primary neurological impairment or immune abnormalities are associated with this phenotype. We report the case of a 10-year-old child of consanguineous parents. He presented with abdominal pain and fever and was noted to have silvery hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows. Bone marrow studies indicated hemophagocytosis, whilst microscopic examination of the hair showed irregular

An examination of spatial variation in mercury concentrations in otter (Lutra canadensis) in south-central Ontario.

Hair samples were collected from otter (Lutra canadensis) trapped in several parts of south-central Ontario, Canada. The concentrations of total Hg in hair were compared with methyl mercury concentrations in liver tissues from the same individuals to determine if hair is a suitable monitoring tissue. Hg in the two tissues was significantly correlated. Hair was used to monitor Hg in 51 individuals from four townships. The concentrations of total Hg in hair ranged from 4 to 20 micrograms/g. No significant variation among the four sample regions existed. Generally the highest concentrations were

Biomedical versus cultural constructions of abnormality: the case of idiopathic hirsutism in the United States.

From an examination of (1) psychological and social stresses documented by the medical profession of women with amounts of hair departing from what is considered to be the "feminine" distribution of hair (idiopathic hirsutism), (2) biomedical information about male and female hair growth and distribution, (3) definitional influences of society, and (4) instrumental maneuverings of depilatory industries, this paper offers insights about the alteration of natural female facial and body hair to conform to a social construct of gender status. Although the hair problem is interesting in itself, its

The Efficacy of Topical Minoxidil for Non-Scarring Alopecia: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Topical minoxidil is the first-line therapy for treating both male and female androgenetic alopecia. Currently there are no comprehensive reviews on the clinical efficacy of minoxidil on hair loss. Method: A literature search was conducted to identify clinically relevant studies regarding the efficacy of topical minoxidil for human subjects for hair loss. Results: Twenty-three pertinent studies were identified for inclusion in this review. Topical minoxidil has been studied in concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 15% for the treatment of AGA resulting in hair growth ranging from

Psoriatic alopecia.

Alopecia and other hair abnormalities occurring in patients with psoriasis were first recognized over four decades ago, yet psoriatic alopecia is not a well-known concept among clinicians. Alopecia may be directly related to the psoriasis itself, and can affect both the scalp and other parts of the body. On the scalp, psoriatic alopecia most commonly affects lesional skin, but may present as a generalized telogen effluvium. In most cases, there is regrowth of hair, but in rare cases it can cause scarring alopecia. Histological findings include features of psoriasis in the interfollicular epith

Sleep-isolated trichotillomania: a survey of dermatologists.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine whether sleep-isolated trichotillomania has been recognized or suspected by dermatologists. METHODS: Eight-hundred and seven practicing dermatologists in the Midwest were identified through the American Academy of Dermatologists website database. A 10-question multiple-choice survey regarding trichotillomania was mailed to each. Responses were anonymously returned by fax. RESULTS: A total of 107 (13%) of the 807 dermatologists surveyed responded. Twelve (11%) reported having seen patients with trichotillomania that occurred solely during sleep. In cases of unex

Three-dimensional comparative study of Merkel cell distribution in various body sites of guinea pigs and rats.

The hair cycling pattern differs between humans and mice: for the former it is mosaic, while the latter show a wave pattern. We focused on the presence or absence of synchronization of the hair cycle based on the distribution of Merkel cells. The three-dimensional distribution and number of Merkel cells in the skin at various sites were determined in guinea pigs and rats. Using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, various types of hair follicles were obtained from the facial, abdominal, nipple, back, tail, perianal and plantar skin. Epidermal sheets containing numerous hair follicles were immunost

Intense pulsed light treatment of hirsutism: case reports of skin phototypes V and VI.

Removal of unwanted hair is a common cosmetic concern. For hirsute women, treatment often requires drug therapy and various methods to physically remove the hair. Traditional methods of hair removal include shaving, waxing, tweezing, depilatory creams and electrolysis. Hair removal methods based on light technology, such as lasers and intense pulsed light systems, are alternative methods for longer-term hair removal. Intense pulsed light has been used in our clinic during the past 2 years to treat light-to-dark skinned patients, including skin types V and VI. We present here the treatment, usi

Pleiotropic effects of the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene on human pigmentation.

Variants of the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene are common in individuals with red hair and fair skin, but the relative contribution to these pigmentary traits in heterozygotes, homozygotes and compound heterozygotes for variants at this locus from the multiple alleles present in Caucasian populations is unclear. We have investigated 174 individuals from 11 large kindreds with a preponderance of red hair and an additional 99 unrelated redheads, for MC1R variants and have confirmed that red hair is usually inherited as a recessive characteristic with the R151C, R160W, D294H, R142H, 86insA a

Trichorrhizophagia.

Trichotillomania is a form of hair loss characterized by an irresistible compulsion to pull out or twist and break off one's own hair. Extracted hairs are often manipulated, examined, or played with before being discarded or eaten. We report an obsessive-compulsive 65-year-old lady who exclusively ate the root of the hair she plucked, in a very selective type of trichophagia. We suggest the new term trichorrhizophagia which means "eating the root of the hair" (from the Greek rhiza rho iota zeta alpha = root) to name this condition.

Paediatric Hypotrichosis: A Clinical and Algorithmic Approach to Diagnosis.

Paediatric hypotrichosis is the clinical feature of paucity of hair arising congenitally or in early life with the presentation being that of the child whose hair is growing insufficiently. It is a hallmark finding of a diverse group of genodermatoses and sporadic disorders, presenting as either an isolated symptom or in association with syndromic features. Hypotrichoses are rare, with numerous possible differentials requiring a thorough clinical assessment, additional investigations for hair shaft abnormalities and occasionally genetic counselling to reach a diagnosis. We propose a clinical a

Permanent noise-induced damage to stereocilia: a scanning electron microscopic study of the lizard's cochlea.

Alligator lizards were exposed to broadband noise ranging in intensity from 106 to 132 dB SPL for two hours and permitted to recover from 19 to 62 days. Hearing loss was assessed by comparing the auditory nerve component of the cochlear potential recorded at the end of the recovery period with that recorded before the noise exposure. The stereocilia in these ears were examined with a scanning electron microscope. These sensory hairs showed pathological changes similar to those described in mammalian cochleas with noise-induced damage. In decreasing order of severity the damage included complet

Trichotillomania in adults.

The cause of hair plucking is purely psychological. The extent of the hair plucking and the area from which the hair is plucked seem to have no direct correlation with the patient's underlying psychopathologic behavior. Hair plucking that begins in childhood and extends into adolescence and adulthood may represent a more complex psychopathologic condition. Therapy can consist of confronting the patient with his behavior and helping him cope with the triggering stressful external causes. Psychiatric consultation is suggested if this is not helpful. Trichotillomania by definition implies psychos

Anagen Effluvium after Therapeutic Scalp Surgery: Unreported Phenomenon.

INTRODUCTION: Many procedures are performed on the scalp, such as excision of pilar and sebaceous cysts, melanocytic nevi, and reduction surgery for scarring alopecia, among others. In hair transplants, telogen effluvium is often reported 3 months after surgery; however, hair loss usually happens much earlier, around second week after the procedure, not compatible with the time required for hair to enter telogen and exogenous phases in normal conditions. CASE REPORTS: We report 3 cases of anagen hair loss 4 weeks after surgeries, with perilesional trichoscopy suggesting anagen effluvium, with

Alopecia areata: Clinical presentation, diagnosis, and unusual cases.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a nonscarring hair loss disorder with a 2% lifetime risk. Most patients are below 30 years old. Clinical types include patchy AA, AA reticularis, diffuse AA, AA ophiasis, AA sisiapho, and perinevoid AA. Besides scalp and body hair, the eyebrows, eyelashes, and nails can be affected. The disorder may be circumscribed, total (scalp hair loss), and universal (loss of all hairs). Atopy, autoimmune thyroid disease, and vitiligo are more commonly associated. The course of the disease is unpredictable. However, early, long-lasting, and severe cases have a less favorable progno

Sabinas syndrome in monozygotic twins.

A pair of 2-year-old female monozygotic twins presented with short and brittle hair. There was marked reduction in hair density, and excessive curving of the eyelashes. Onychodystrophy was also evident. They also had developmental delay in verbal and motor skills. Neither their parents nor other relatives were known to be affected, and there was no history of consanguinity. Examination of the hair shaft under light microscopy showed trichoschisis, which was more evident under electron microscopy. Under polarized light, the hair shafts showed the pathognomonic 'tiger-tail' pattern. The level of

Changes in distribution pattern of CD8 lymphocytes in the scalp in alopecia areata during treatment with diphencyprone.

For many years, the role of T lymphocytes was hypothesized as being a major factor responsible for hair loss in alopecia areata (a.a.). While numerous lymphocytic populations were found around hair bulbs, changes in their distribution patterns in the skin during the course and recovery of the disease remain unknown. In the present study, distribution of CD8 lymphocytes in biopsies obtained from a.a. patients was measured before and during treatment using diphencyprone (DCP). Results show about a 600% increase in the number of CD8 lymphocytes under the epithelium and about a 250% increase aroun

A Comparative Analysis of the Efficacy of Local Anesthetics and Systemic Anesthetics in the Red-Headed Versus Non-Red-Headed Patient Population: A Comprehensive Review.

Researchers have found that individuals with red hair often require higher doses of anesthetic medications to achieve the same level of pain relief or sedation compared to people with other hair colors. This review investigates the effects of local and systemic anesthetics in individuals with red hair compared to the general population. Focusing on both local and systemic anesthesia, this research aims to elucidate any distinctive responses or complications among the red-haired demographic. Utilizing a systematic review approach, we analyzed a wide array of previous research papers published o

Trichoscopy findings of frontal fibrosing alopecia on the eyebrows: A study of 151 cases.

BACKGROUND: Eyebrow loss (madarosis) is a frequent sign of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), and it can be the first sign of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To describe trichoscopy findings of FFA on the eyebrows. METHODS: The analysis included 151 women with histologically proven diagnosis of FFA and eyebrow loss. Trichoscopy of the eyebrow area was performed with either a FotoFinder videodermatoscope or handheld dermoscope DermLite II pro. RESULTS: The most frequent signs on trichoscopy were yellow dots (92.7%), multiple pinpoint dots (79.5%), short thin hairs/vellus (76.2%), black dots (66.2%),
