Parental overprotection and youth suicide behavior in low- and middle-income countries: a multilevel analysis of cross-national data.

OBJECTIVES: Research on youth suicide behavior has emphasized parent-child relations as a critical protective factor. This study investigates whether "too much" regulation of children, i.e., overprotection, may actually increase the likelihoods of youth suicide intent and plan. METHODS: Data are drawn from the subset of the Global School-based Student Health Survey (2000-2012), consisting of children living in 48 low- and middle-income countries. Two-level hierarchical linear models are fitted to examine the potential curvilinear (U-shaped) association between parental monitoring and suicide

Whiplash Syndrome Reloaded: Digital Echoes of Whiplash Syndrome in the European Internet Search Engine Context.

BACKGROUND: In many Western countries, after a motor vehicle collision, those involved seek health care for the assessment of injuries and for insurance documentation purposes. In contrast, in many less wealthy countries, there may be limited access to care and no insurance or compensation system. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this infodemiology study was to investigate the global pattern of evolving Internet usage in countries with and without insurance and the corresponding compensation systems for whiplash injury. METHODS: We used the Internet search engine analytics via Google Trends to stud

The Enduring Significance of Skin Tone: Linking Skin Tone, Attitudes Toward Marriage and Cohabitation, and Sexual Behavior.

Past evidence has documented that attitudes toward marriage and cohabitation are related to sexual behavior in adolescence and young adulthood. This study extends prior research by longitudinally testing these associations across racial/ethnic groups and investigating whether culturally relevant variations within racial/ethnic minority groups, such as skin tone (i.e., lightness/darkness of skin color), are linked to attitudes toward marriage and cohabitation and sex. Drawing on family and public health literatures and theories, as well as burgeoning skin tone literature, it was hypothesized th

Factors influencing movement probabilities of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) in buildings.

We investigated movements of female big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) roosting in maternity colonies in buildings in Fort Collins, Colorado (USA), during the summers of 2002, 2003, and 2005. This behavior can be of public health concern where bats that may carry diseases (e.g., rabies) move among buildings occupied by people. We used passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) to mark individual bats and hoop PIT readers at emergence points to passively monitor the use of building roosts by marked adult females on a daily basis during the lactation phase of reproduction. Multi-strata models wer

Mental health screening of preschool children: validity and reliability of ABLE.

Children with behavioral, emotional or language problems struggle to do well at school often with limited success. ABLE (Attention, Behavior, Language, and Emotions), a new screening tool, was used to estimate the prevalence and the severity of concerns parents and teachers have about children's school adjustment and evaluate their need for services. Data obtained from the parents and teachers of children randomly selected from public Pre-K classrooms in 6 states (N = 415) and from a mental health screening of rural and urban children (N = 5,577) support the validity and reliability of ABLE. Dissociation as a mediator of psychopathology among sexually abused children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role of dissociation as a mediator of mental health outcomes in children with a history of sexual abuse. METHOD: The study group consisted of 114 children and adolescents (ages 10-18 years) who were wards of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and were living in residential treatment centers. Interviews, provider ratings, and chart reviews were used to assess the relationship of childhood abuse history, dissociative responses, and psychopathology. RESULTS: Sexual abuse history was significantly associated with dissociation, whereas a

Measuring the exposure of infants to tobacco smoke. Nicotine and cotinine in urine and saliva.

The effect of parental smoking on the well-being of infants and children is an important public health concern. It is necessary, however, to validate the existence of such exposure objectively before an evaluation of the effects of parental smoking behavior on the child's health can be made. We measured the concentration of nicotine and its major metabolite, cotinine, in the saliva and urine of 32 infants with household exposure to tobacco smoke, and 19 unexposed infants. The concentrations were significantly higher in the exposed group than in the unexposed group, with the best indicator of c

Bridging the Digital Divide Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Men Who Have Sex With Men to Reduce Substance Use and HIV Risk: Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a promising data collection tool for mobile health interventions targeting episodic health behaviors. For substance-using men who have sex with men (SUMSM), EMA is becoming more widely utilized in efforts to characterize substance use and sexual risk factors for HIV transmission. However, recent literature demonstrates emerging concerns over compliance and lower EMA engagement and data concordance among racial and ethnic minority SUMSM. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a qualitative evaluation of the barriers and facilitators of EMA a

Behavioral Economics and Tobacco Control: Current Practices and Future Opportunities.

Despite considerable progress, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. To address the considerable health and economic burden of tobacco use, the development of improved tobacco control and treatment interventions is critical. By combining elements of economics and psychology, behavioral economics provides a framework for novel solutions to treat smokers who have failed to quit with traditional smoking cessation interventions. The full range of behavioral economic principles, however, have not been widely utilized in the realm of tobacco control and treatme

Support After Adolescent Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment During the Transition Into Emerging Adulthood: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a chronic disease requiring long-term treatment, yet current treatment models do not align with the chronicity of obesity. Current guidelines provide limited direction on how to adapt treatment to support weight loss maintenance as adolescents transition into emerging adulthood, a distinct developmental period from the late teens to the mid-to-late twenties. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aims to (1) better understand adolescents' and their parents' experiences after behavioral weight-loss treatment as they navigate the transition from late adolescence into emerging

Situating Health Experiences: A Culture-Centered Interrogation.

Culture-centered studies of health communication de-center the theorization of health as an individual behavior and reveal the structural conditions that shape inequalities in health outcomes. The present study examines the ways in which space and housing shape experiences of health in a low-income site in Auckland undergoing radical redevelopment. We draw from a culture-centered project undertaken in 2018-2021 predominantly among Māori and Pasifika peoples involving 60 initial in-depth interviews, seven focus groups, a series of filmed interviews, and 32 additional in-depth interviews conduct

Cold-Related Illness In An Era Of Extreme Climate Events: US Trends, 1998-2022.

Cold-related illnesses (CRIs) are preventable yet often deadly. Using twenty-five years of data from the National Inpatient Sample (1998-2022), we assessed nationwide trends in CRI hospitalizations and concomitant alcohol use, substance use, and mental health disorders and housing insecurity. We identified 345,314 (weighted) CRI hospitalizations and found that age- and sex-adjusted rates tripled from 42.0 to 122.5 per 100,000 hospitalizations. CRI inpatients were more likely than others to die during hospitalization, live in high-poverty ZIP codes, be publicly insured or uninsured, and have be

Psychosocial needs of incarcerated veterans with other than honorable discharge characterizations.

The Veterans Health Administration recently expanded eligibility to allow behavioral health care for veterans with "other than honorable" (OTH) discharge characterizations, a group with unique demographic and psychosocial needs, including overrepresentation in criminal-legal contexts. To guide the integration of these veterans into Veterans Health Administration behavioral health care settings, this study offers initial insight into the needs of veterans with OTH involved in the criminal-legal system. Using data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates, analyses compared incarcerated veterans wi

Digital Technologies in Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Science Advisory From the American Heart Association.

Cardiac rehabilitation has strong evidence of benefit across many cardiovascular conditions but is underused. Even for those patients who participate in cardiac rehabilitation, there is the potential to better support them in improving behaviors known to promote optimal cardiovascular health and in sustaining those behaviors over time. Digital technology has the potential to address many of the challenges of traditional center-based cardiac rehabilitation and to augment care delivery. This American Heart Association science advisory was assembled to guide the development and implementation of

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Mental Health Care for Children and Young Adults: A National Study.

Psychiatric and behavior problems are common among children and young adults, and many go without care or only receive treatment in carceral settings. We examined racial and ethnic disparities in children's and young adults' receipt of mental health and substance abuse care using nationally representative data from the 2006-2012 Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys. Blacks' and Hispanics' visit rates (and per capita expenditures) were about half those of non-Hispanic whites for all types and definitions of outpatient mental health services. Disparities were generally larger for young adults than
