Following a work refusal at a plant manufacturing ice cream novelties in Ontario, we were asked to document cases of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in this workplace. A variety of significant health effects are associated with occupational exposures to noise and vibration, which are an integral part of many agricultural operations. Since vibrating surfaces represent one of the primary sources of noise, exposures to both types of physical stressors are commonly encountered. The effects of noise and vibration exposures may be exacerbated among farm workers because they tend to be more isolated than workers in other types of industry. As a consequence, access to health and safety information, medical care, and hazard control technology may be more restricted.

The occupational injury profile of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics is not well described. We retrospectively studied 254 injuries over a 3.5-year period in a busy urban EMS system. Low back strain was the most common injury (93/254, 36%), with EMTs suffering a significantly higher injury rate than paramedics (0.33 v 0.17 injuries/person-years at risk, P = .03). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes for the youngest eligible patients with disabilities enrolled in a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). We hypothesized that health (as defined by validated measures of function, mood, quality of life, and community engagement) and care satisfaction (as defined by perceptions of care delivery) would improve after 1 year compared with baseline, and health care use would be similar to benchmarks from the National PACE Association.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
