Characterizing the chemical and microbial fingerprint of unsheltered homelessness in an urban watershed.

Unsheltered homelessness is rapidly becoming a critical issue in many cities worldwide. The worsening situation not only highlights the socioeconomic plight, but it also raises awareness of ancillary issues such as the potential implications for urban water quality. The objective of this study was to simultaneously leverage diverse source tracking tools to develop a chemical and microbial fingerprint describing the relative contribution of direct human inputs into Las Vegas' tributary washes. By evaluating a wide range of urban water matrices using general water quality parameters, fecal indic

Shared network-level functional alterations across substance use disorders: A multi-level kernel density meta-analysis of resting-state functional connectivity studies.

An increasing number of neuroimaging studies indicate functional alterations in cortico-striatal loops in individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Dysregulations in these circuits may contribute to drug-seeking and drug-consuming behaviour by impeding inhibitory control, habit formation, and reward processing. Despite evidence of network-level changes in SUD, a shared pattern of functional alterations within and between spatially distributed brain networks has not been systematically investigated. The present meta-analytic investigation aims at identifying common alterations in resting-

The measurement of substance use disapproval: different information capacity of disapproval of licit and illicit psychoactive substances along a spectrum of substance use disapproval.

Objectives: Approval/disapproval of substance use behavior might have a role in the development and persistence of substance use. However, less is known about the measurement function of disapproval of using different types of psychoactive substances. By using item response analyses, the present study aimed to examine the latent structure as well as item-level measurement properties of the construct of substance use disapproval. Methods: Nationally representative adult samples derived from the National Survey on Addiction Problems in Hungary from 2015 (N=2274) and 2019 (N=1385) were used in th

Feasibility of Emergency Department-based Fentanyl Test Strip Distribution.

OBJECTIVES: United States drug overdose deaths now overwhelmingly involve fentanyl and fentanyl analogs. The emergency department (ED) is an important setting to provide harm reduction for persons who use drugs, but ED-based fentanyl test strip distribution has not yet been described. METHODS: This is an observational study of patients with an opioid-related visit to an ED in downtown Chicago, Illinois. We offered fentanyl test strips alongside an existing take-home naloxone program and report on the number of patients who accepted fentanyl test strips. We assessed patient familiarity with fe

Animal evidence considered in determination of cannabis smoke and Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9 -THC) as causing reproductive toxicity (developmental endpoint); Part II. Neurodevelopmental effects.

This review focuses on neurodevelopmental effects observed in animal studies of cannabis smoke and Δ9 -THC. Effects in offspring after preconceptional, prenatal, or perinatal exposure to cannabis smoke or Δ9 -THC were considered. Locomotor and exploratory behavior effects were noted in rats. Cognitive effects observed included impairment of memory and learning, attention deficits, time taken to complete tasks (rats) and alterations in response to visual stimuli (rats/monkeys). Emotionality was observed in rodents as an increase in separation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations, reduced social int

The opioid epidemic among the Latino population in California.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic in the United States has manifested differently across geographic regions and populations, with recent increases among racial/ethnic minorities and in the Western region of the U.S. This study provides an overview of the opioid overdose epidemic among Latinos in California and highlights high-risk areas in the state. METHODS: Using publicly available data from California, we examined trends in opioid-related deaths (e.g., overdose) and opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits among Latinos at the county-level, as well as changes in opioid outcomes overti

Homeless Opioid Treatment Clients Transitioning to Dependent and Independent Housing: Differential Outcomes by Race/Ethnicity.

Purpose: Homeless opioid treatment clients who transition into housing generally demonstrate better outcomes, but housing environments vary widely and may not benefit racial/ethnic minority populations equally. We sought to identify how race/ethnicity moderates the association between positive opioid treatment response and moving into dependent or independent living environments. Methods: We used the Treatment Episode Dataset-Discharges (2018-2019) to identify outpatient treatment clients who were homeless at admission and indicated heroin or other opioids as their primary drug of choice (n =

Opioid Use Disorder: Treatment Outcomes in U.S. Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with opioid use disorder representing a growing public health concern and economic burden. Veterans within the Veterans Health Administration are impacted by opioid use disorder. SIGNIFICANCE: A common medication-assisted treatment is sublingual Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) used in combination with behavior modification therapy. Missed Suboxone doses may lead to withdrawal and potential drug diversion. Sublocade (buprenorphine extended-release) is an alternative once-monthly subcutane

Willingness of people who inject drugs to participate in a randomised controlled trial involving financial incentives to initiate hepatitis C treatment.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the acceptability of contingency management is limited. We investigated the willingness of people who inject drugs to participate in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) involving financial incentives to initiate HCV treatment. METHODS: ETHOS Engage is an observational cohort study of people with a history of injecting drug use who either injected in the past six months or receive opioid agonist therapy (OAT) in Australia. We assessed willingness to participate in a RCT with financial incentives and factors associated with preference for entire incentive ($60) at

Using molecular epidemiology to trace the history of the injection-related HIV epidemic in New York City, 1985-2019.

OBJECTIVE: Unintentional drug poisoning and overdose deaths in New York City (NYC) increased 175% between 2010 and 2017, partly due to the transition from noninjectable opioids to heroin injection. This transition has led to concern of a resurgent HIV epidemic among persons who inject drugs (PWID) in NYC. Thus, we sought to characterize HIV transmission dynamics in PWID. DESIGN: Genetic network analysis of HIV-1 public health surveillance data. METHODS: We analyzed HIV diagnoses reported to public health surveillance to determine the trajectory of the HIV epidemic among PWID in NYC, from 198

Past 12-month nonfatal overdose among people who inject drugs in Ukraine: City-level estimates and risk factors from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nonfatal overdose contributes to high morbidity and is among the strongest proxies for the occurrence of overdose fatality - the leading cause of death among those who use opioids. In Ukraine, a majority of people who inject drugs (PWID) use opioids, but little is known about the relationship between drug market characteristics, nonfatal overdose (NFOD) prevalence, and risk factors for NFOD. METHODS: We used cross-sectional respondent-driven sampling (RDS) data to explore the variability of recent (past 12 months) NFOD among PWID across Ukrainian cities and associations with indiv

A qualitative assessment of discharge against medical advice among patients hospitalized for injection-related bacterial infections in West Virginia.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) and other systemic bacterial infections is increasing, and people who inject drugs (PWID) have higher rates of discharge against medical advice (AMA) for these infections than patients whose infections are not injection-related. In this study, we characterize factors that contribute to AMA hospital discharge among PWID. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with twenty PWID hospitalized with serious injection-related bacterial infections in West Virginia. Participants completed a brief survey and in-depth qualitative interview. I

Predictors of Safe Prescription Opioid Storage and Participation in Drug Take-Back Events: Results from a Statewide Survey.

Improper storage and disposal of prescribed opioids can lead to diversion or accidental poisonings. Studies of emergency department and cancer patients suggest prescription opioids are rarely stored securely or disposed of when unneeded. Safe storage and disposal practices reduce risks for others living in or visiting a household. The purpose of this study is thus to examine prescription opioid storage and participation in drug take-back events among Michigan adults. Participants (N = 702) were recruited through social media advertisements to complete an online survey in July and August 2018.

Opioid-related emergencies in New York City after the Great Recession.

BACKGROUND: The rise in opioid-related mortality and opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits has stimulated research on whether broader economic declines, such as the Great Recession, affect opioid-related morbidity. We examine in New York City whether one measure of morbidity-opioid-related ED visits-responded acutely to the large negative "shock" of the Great Recession. METHODS: Data comprise outpatient "treat and release" opioid-related ED visits in New York City for the 72 months spanning January 2006 to December 2011, taken from the Statewide Emergency Department Database (n = 15

Prevalence and predictors of recent temporary psychiatric hold among a cohort of people who inject drugs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

UNLABELLED: California's Welfare and Institutions code 5150 allows for a temporary psychiatric hold (TPH) of individuals who present a danger to themselves or others and/or may be gravely disabled due to mental illness. Little is known about the frequency and predictors of involuntary holds among people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: We sought to identify the prevalence and predictors of recent TPHs (within the past 12 months) among a community-recruited sample of PWID in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California during 2017-2018 (N = 531).
