[Bone hydatid cyst: a rare localization at the level of the hip bone].

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease caused by the development in humans of the larval form of a tapeworm, namely a very small tænia called Echinococcus Granulosus. This anthropozoonosis is characterized by the presence of different types of anatomo-radiologic variants associated with various topographic and evolutionary aspects of the cysts. Bone hydatid disease is a rare condition, it accounts for only 0.9-2.5% of all locations. We report the case of a 9 year old child, who was admitted with febrile lameness and with a mass in the right iliac fossa, revealing a hydatid cyst at the level of

Emergency department evaluation and treatment of acute hip and thigh pain.

Although the incidence of hip fractures is decreasing, the overall prevalence continues to increase because of an aging population. People older than 65 suffer fractures at a rate of 0.6% per year--2% per year for persons older than 85. One in 5 patients suffering a hip fracture will die within a year. Additionally, the emergency physician must consider entities such as avascular necrosis, compartment syndrome, and muscular disruption. This article reviews patterns and complications of acute hip and thigh injuries and clinically relevant diagnostic, anesthetic, and treatment options that facil

Factors related to low back pain in patients with hip osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of low back pain (LBP) is high in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA). Evidence from previous studies suggests that lumbar alignments and hip range of motion (ROM) are important etiological factors for LBP. However, no studies have investigated which factors that have the greatest influence on LBP. OBJECTIVE: This investigation aimed to collectively examine factors related to LBP in patients with hip OA, including lumbar lordosis angle (LLA), leg length discrepancy (LLD), and hip ROM. METHODS: Thirty-five patients participated in this study. LBP was treated as a d

Predicting mortality following hip fracture: an analysis of comorbidities and complications.

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is common in the geriatric population. These patients have multiple comorbidities that complicate treatment and recovery such that poor functional outcomes often result. Since functional outcomes are associated with comorbidities and complications it is important to define the contributing factors. AIMS: To describe comorbidities common to geriatric hip fracture patients and determine predictability of complications and mortality based on comorbidities. METHODS: Data in this study were sourced from information prospectively collected for evaluation of a new orthogeri

Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty in a Rare Case of Multicentric Reticulohistiocytosis.

Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis (MRH) is a rare systemic disease, which commonly manifests as muco-cutaneous papulonodules and inflammatory erosive polyarthropathy. In this research, we report the clinical manifestations and management of a rare case of MRH with destructive arthropathy of bilateral hip joints and arthritis mutilans presenting with characteristic deformities. Disabling hip arthropathy that occurs secondary to MRH can be successfully managed with bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA). Osteopenia and acetabular bone defects must be anticipated during THA. This case is reporte

Treatment of hip subluxation in skeletally mature patients with cerebral palsy.

Hip subluxation is common in children with spastic cerebral palsy. Most physicians favor intervention to treat hip subluxation in skeletally immature patients with cerebral palsy. However, treatment in skeletally mature patients with cerebral palsy is controversial. The goal of this study was to evaluate radiographic and clinical outcomes after hip reconstruction in skeletally mature patients with cerebral palsy. The authors performed a retrospective review of all skeletally mature patients (n=20) with cerebral palsy who underwent hip surgery for subluxation at the authors' institution between

Anterior Longitudinal Osteotomy of the Greater Trochanter in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

The extra-articular impingement of the greater trochanter against the ileum is an underrated cause of early dislocation in total hip arthroplasty. In this preliminary study, the authors assess the effectiveness of an anterior longitudinal osteotomy of the greater trochanter for preventing dislocation. A total of 115 patients underwent a total hip arthroplasty through a posterolateral approach. All patients underwent clinical and radiological follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months. No dislocation was reported. All patients demonstrated fast recovery of range of motion and walking. No trochanter fractu

Septic Arthritis of the Hip in the Setting of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: A Case Report.

CASE: A twenty-two-month-old boy with septic hip arthritis had persistent elevated inflammatory markers and daily fevers despite multiple antibiotic regimens and repeated surgical debridements yielding negative cultures. After exhaustive work-up for other infectious, rheumatologic, and immunologic etiologies, he met diagnostic criteria for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and developed cultures positive for fungal hip arthritis. Following treatment for HLH and fungal hip arthritis, he improved and was discharged. CONCLUSION: No previous report in the literature specifically associates

Hip pain and fever: when it's not a septic joint, what's next?

Hip pain and fever in children include a broad differential. Most concerning is the possible diagnosis of a septic joint, which carries significant morbidity. We describe the case of a 13-year-old boy with fever and hip pain who was referred to the emergency department with concern for septic hip. The etiology was later discovered to be pyomyositis from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In areas with high prevalence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, it is important for physicians to be aware of this rare, but potentially complicated condition.
